According to Medical News Today, COVID-19 causes a reduction in smell and taste in many patients. These symptoms occur early in the disease and are sometimes the only recognizable symptoms in people with COVID-19. In a previous study conducted by researchers in the COVID-19 pandemic, they reported that anosmia occurs in approximately 5% of individuals with COVID-19 infection. However, further studies during the pandemic reported higher rates of anosmia.

One hypothesis why some people with COVID-19 infection develop anosmia is a genetic difference in the virus' ability to attach to receptors in the nasal cavity. People with COVID-19 infection usually regain their sense of taste and smell after a few days or weeks, but for some, it can take longer than that.

 

Symptoms of anosmia and how to recognize it

There is no medical test that specifically diagnoses a loss of smell. A doctor will rely heavily on reporting patients about these symptoms. They may also ask the patient to react to a series of fragrances or foods and report what they can and cannot smell.

To identify anosmia, look for something that has a strong, characteristic odor. Food may be a good choice here, such as coffee beans, cinnamon, or fresh garlic. You can also choose to use non-food items like baby powder or scented candles. If you have trouble catching your chosen scent, you may experience a loss of smell.

One way to restore your sense of smell naturally is to practice your sense of smell slowly. This is a process that involves sniffing different smells for a period of time to train the brain to recognize different smells.

In olfactory training, the patient smells a series of four strong odors that can be found in a person's home, or in the form of essential oils. The selected odor is an easily recognizable or familiar smell. Each scent is inhaled gently for 20 seconds. This process was repeated three times a day for 6 weeks.

Olfactory training may be most effective if you sniff the same four odors every day, rather than alternating them. It is also recommended to concentrate fully on the scent, paying full attention, for 20 seconds. To try olfactory training you can use coffee, rose, orange, eucalyptus, vanilla, clove or mint scents.

During olfactory training, you may experience a strange smell that is not what it is supposed to smell like. This includes foul odors such as burning rubber or body waste. This is known as parosmia. Parosmia can last for several weeks or longer but is usually temporary.

This breathing exercise aims to aid recovery based on neuroplasticity - the brain's ability to rearrange itself to compensate for changes or injury.

 

Castor oil

Dr Sandra El Hajj, a naturopathic doctor, recommends castor oil for anosmia.

“Naturally, castor oil has long been used to restore lost odors, due to its active component, ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid can help fight infection. It also helps reduce swelling and inflammation of the nasal passages caused by colds and allergies,” she says.

Castor oil comes from castor seeds. It is used as a nasya, or nasal passage treatment to restore the sense of smell by Ayurveda practitioners. How to use castor oil to restore smell are:

- Gently heat the castor oil on the stove or microwave. Make sure it's warm and not hot.

- Apply two drops of the oil in the front of the nostrils twice a day: once when you wake up and right before going to bed.

 

Ginger

Ginger has a distinctive and pungent aroma that makes it beneficial for use in olfactory training. You can use ground or raw ginger to train your sense of smell. Dr Hajj also recommends drinking ginger tea.

"Naturally, drinking ginger tea can reduce inflammation in the nasal airways, while reducing the formation of excess mucus that clogs the nasal passages, causing a loss of smell," he says.

To try ginger tea to restore smell, try using a ready-made ginger tea bag. You can also make tea from raw ginger by peeling and chopping the ginger. Steep one tablespoon of raw ginger in two cups of hot water for about 15 minutes.

 

Saline solution

If you have lost your sense of smell due to allergies or a stuffy nose, washing with salt water can help. This method removes allergens and mucus from the nasal cavity. You can buy a ready-made sterile saline solution or make your own by:

1. Pour 1 cup of distilled or boiled tap water into a freshly washed container.

2. Add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda to the water.

3. Fill a squeeze bottle or medical syringe with the mixture.

4. Tilt your head back.

5. Spray the solution into one nostril, aiming at the back of the head, not the top of the head.

6. Let it drain out of the other nostril or mouth.

7. Repeat several times a day.

8. Be careful not to let water enter the throat.
