"The existing investment environment is not suitable for maintaining large investors"

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Iraqi Oil Minister, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar, said that British Petroleum and Russia's Lukoil are planning to withdraw from Iraq.

Abdul-Jabbar made this statement during his hosting of a session held by the Iraqi parliament last week.

In a video recording published by the Ministry of Oil on its Facebook page, Abdul-Jabbar said that Shell had withdrawn from Iraq and the giant ExxonMobil had followed suit.

He pointed out that the British BP wanted to withdraw from the giant Rumaila field, and confirmed that he had received an official notification from the Russian Lukoil Company stating that it wanted to sell its share in the West Qurna-2 field to Chinese companies.

He said that "the existing investment environment is not suitable for maintaining large investors."

Abdul-Jabbar explained that all major investors are either looking for another market or another partner.

"We, as an investment environment, are not suitable for major partners," he added.

Abdul-Jabbar said that ExxonMobil wanted to sell its stake in West Qurna-1 for no more than $400 million, a price he described as "very cheap".

Iraq pumps about four million barrels per day of crude, more than any other member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries except Saudi Arabia.

Major international oil companies complain of strict contractual conditions and delays in paying their financial dues, as well as political and security instability in the country.

Last week, large-scale protests erupted over power cuts, which prompted the Iraqi Minister of Electricity to resign.

Oil production was not affected by the power outage.
