BAGHDAD - Mawazine News
US President Joe Biden has begun the procedures for closing the Guantanamo prison camp, and hopes that it will be closed permanently by the end of his first year in office.

NBC News reported that the administration is continuing its efforts to close the Guantanamo prison in an effort to avoid a political setback and make progress before September 11, the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in 2001.

While Congress has blocked attempts to close the facility in the past, the network stated that the White House is taking a less aggressive approach, indicating The administration is working to transfer some prisoners from the facility to other countries, while Congress will have to allow the transfer of any terrorism suspects, including those involved in 9/11, to a detention facility on the mainland United States.

It is noteworthy that there are 40 people in detention in Guantanamo Bay, which was opened by former President George W. Bush in 2002 and held about 800 detainees, and former President Barack Obama tried to close the camp during his presidency, but he faced strong opposition from Congress.
