ERBIL - Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Tuesday received the UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, in Baghdad where they discussed closer cooperations between the two countries.

Kadhimi's office said in a statement that the pair stressed the importance of coordinating work with international parties supporting the implementation of the early elections scheduled for October.

The UK secretary reiterated his country's support for Kadhimi's government in imposing the rule of law.

"Signing a strategic political cooperation agreement between the two countries is the culmination of enhanced relations between Baghdad and London," the Iraqi PM said, expressing his appreciation for UK's position in supporting Iraq in its war against terrorism.

Raab conveyed the greetings of UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the Iraqi government and people, reaffirming London's "full support" for Iraq and the government's efforts to impose the rule of law and stability.

The meeting of the Presidents of the Republic, Barham Salih, Ministers Mustafa Al-Kazemi and the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, separately, with the British Foreign Minister, witnessed a discussion of bilateral relations between the two countries, and ways to strengthen them, especially in the post-military cooperation phase within the international coalition to defeat ISIS, with the aim of developing economic cooperation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs explained, "The document that was signed between Iraq and Britain is based on the previous agreement between the Iraqi government and the European Union," noting that "the signing of the strategic document came after Britain's exit from the European Union."
For his part, Raab expressed his happiness at visiting Iraq, and said: We had a constructive dialogue and are working to develop bilateral relations, adding that "the upcoming elections are a milestone in the history of Iraq."
He affirmed his country's commitment to supporting the Iraqi government and people, and cooperating in all fields to achieve development and stability.

Mubasher: British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that there are British companies on the cusp of investing in Iraq.

Raab added to the “Tenth” program, which is shown on the Al-Iraqiya news channel, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), today, Tuesday: “I had very important meetings with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, and I was proud to sign on behalf of my country a strategic agreement with Iraq.” .

He added, "Britain supports Iraq in the areas of elections, economy and security, as it provided one million pounds sterling to monitor the upcoming elections in order to be free and fair."

The minister pointed out that "his country encourages Iraqi security leaders to come to the United Kingdom for the purpose of training."

 

He explained that Iraq has a starting point towards a bright future, and Britain is there to support it, stressing that "Britain provides joint support to Iraq because it is part of NATO."

The British minister continued: "The Iraqi security forces can take control of matters, and we support them with that."

Regarding the white paper, Raab said that he "discussed with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi the white reform paper to support the Iraqi economy and push it forward," noting that "there are opportunities to attract investment to Iraq."

The British Foreign Secretary stressed "the need not to depend on oil and gas, and the industrial and agricultural sectors can be developed," noting that "his country will support the Iraqi government in achieving the goals set in the white paper."

He pointed out that "there are British companies on the cusp of investment in Iraq," stressing that "there is a fertile ground for investment in Iraq."

Hmm...on the Cusp....promising...coming from the UK, hoping this is signaling a short time line, rather than an all too familiar Iraqi “ in the near future “

 

Gotta say: after 18 years this is just downright exhausting, tedious, monotonous & well y’all picking up what I’m laying down, huh.
 

It’s pretty ridiculous that we’re still waiting isn’t it ? This turned into a Farce some time ago, & yet they’re quite content to plod along at the speed of quicksand ( which should probably be called slowsand cuz ain’t nuthin quick about it ).
