    WASHINGTON - The US government has confirmed that it will stop secretly obtaining phone and email data from journalists during investigations into political leaks. The New York Times reported this week that "under the administration of Republican Donald Trump and then Democratic President Joe Biden, the Department of Justice fought a secret legal battle to obtain the email data of four of the newspaper's reporters in search of sources for leaks." And the Ministry of Justice announced in a statement yesterday, Saturday, “to change these long-standing practices,” stressing that it “will not seek to take mandatory legal measures in investigations into leaks to obtain the source of information from media workers.” She added that she had "completed a review to identify all pending cases for which the ministry received requests from correspondents in connection with investigations about leaks." "All relevant correspondents have been notified," she added.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that "issuing memos to obtain correspondents' data in the leak investigation is inconsistent with the policy direction of the president." CNN reported last month that "the Trump administration secretly sought and succeeded in obtaining the phone and email data of one of its correspondents."

They must not understand that leaking information before it is officially released is a crime.

That is a good way to compromise a classified operation.

Biden knows, and that's why it is A-OK with him to put as much leaked info out there as is humanly possible....   He is the laughing stock of the world.....

I did not know that we had a Ministry of Justice. Makes me wonder about the validity of the report.

Never said what they were doing in getting the journalist info was illegal . What they are saying is that they won't investigate leaks. Leaks that can undermine the United States President, and the need to protect our domestic and foreign activities . . In other words, go ahead and violate law in the US, just wave around your press card . It is now a get out of jail free card.
