Shafaq News / On Thursday, the local authorities in Anbar governorate began a broad plan to control the huge rise in prices of goods and foodstuffs, in conjunction with the escalation of citizens' complaints about several times higher prices, which affected the purchasing power of the citizen, especially those with limited income.

The mayor of Fallujah district, Muayad al-Dulaimi, told Shafaq News, “The failure to restore the exchange rate of the dollar to what it was, in addition to the decision to apply the curfew during the month of Ramadan, two things made the price hike expected and natural, and traders cannot be held accountable if they are done. Equitable central government action. "

Al-Dulaimi stressed, "A directive has been made to publish members of the national security services and organized economic crime in all the governorate's markets in civilian clothes, with the aim of monitoring prices and stopping manipulators, in the event that prices are raised too much."

He added, "The discussions with the central government about finding solutions that contribute to limiting the rise in prices have failed, but there is communication with the Speaker of Parliament, to find a solution for at least the needy families, and a measure will soon be announced that will contribute to easing the burden on the low-income segments in Anbar." .

For their part, Anbar residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the government's measures to limit the rise in prices, indicating that they are accustomed to that, when the month of Ramadan approaches each year.

Citizen Abdul Aziz Jawdat (32 years old) expressed his anger at the high prices, saying, "I work as a wage earner in a store for two hundred thousand dinars a month, and the high prices mean that I will not be able to provide a living for ten days at least."

Meanwhile, Fuad Talib (46 years old) mocked, "We, the poor, have two rewards in Ramadan, the reward for fasting and the reward for patience for thieves, who used to take advantage of this month to raise prices."

Talib added, to Shafaq News Agency, if the government cannot provide any amount that would help us, then they should lift the curfew so that we can work and provide a living for our families.

On the other hand, one of the owners of wholesale food commodities stores, Asim Sudan, said during his interview with Shafaq News, that "they have nothing to do with the high prices, and they are also affected by this matter, as they owe hundreds of dollars to Baghdad merchants, and most of them have suffered heavy losses." It led to a number of market owners leaving their shops. "

The first of its kind ... France supports Basra's activities with 250,000 euros

{Economy: Al Furat News} The United Nations World Food Program welcomed France's contribution of 250,000 euros to support resilience-building activities with regard to agricultural activities in Basra Governorate in southern Iraq, which will support 7,500 people and their families.

According to a UNAMI statement, France’s contribution to working with the World Food Program in southern Iraq is the first of its kind, which will contribute to strengthening self-reliance and in the long term for tens of thousands of people indirectly in fragile and food insecure societies. Indeed, such initiatives They are extremely important during a pandemic.
The Federal Government of Germany represented by the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funded this project as well. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Basra municipality, local communities and the Action Against Hunger Organization as an implementing partner and it is a non-governmental organization.
"Iraq is particularly affected by climate change due to drought and salinity of irrigation water, including in the south of the country," said the French ambassador to Iraq, Bruno Hubert. "There is an urgent need to take some measures about this. In this context, France is deeply committed to supporting agriculture in Iraq through the World Food Program. The palm plantation will contribute to combating desertification and support the Iraqi farmers' revenues," he added.
Women represent more than half of the participants in this project, which provides grants to about 50 trainees, to support them in establishing small projects. This includes advising on food production, marketing and selling to local markets, strengthening linkages and helping to create and create sustainable income.
For his part, the representative of the World Food Program in Iraq, Abdul Rahman Megaj, confirmed: "
"The strong partnership between the World Food Program and France on development assistance has a positive impact on local communities, improving agricultural productivity and access to water. Project participants can also build small businesses and food value chains for what they produce in southern Iraq," he added.
Solar powered irrigation water pumps are another innovative solution introduced in the project, along with training of participants in the application of environmental principles to agricultural systems and practices, which covers practices with low environmental impact. In this way, initiatives help improve livelihoods in an environmentally and economically continuous manner.

For the tenth month in a row ... the world food price index rose

{Economic: Al Furat News} The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO" said today, Thursday, that global food prices rose for the tenth month in a row last March, reaching their highest levels since June 2014.

The UN agency recorded an increase in the prices of several products, especially vegetable oils, meat and dairy products.

The FAO Food Price Index, which measures monthly changes for a range of grains, vegetable oils, dairy products, meat and sugar, averaged 118.5 points last month, compared to 116.1 points in February.

The Rome-based organization said in a statement that "world cereal crops are still on their way to a record annual level in 2020, and preliminary indications indicate a new increase in production this year."

The FAO raised its forecast for the 2020 cereal season to 2.765 billion tons from a previous estimate of 2.761 billion tons, indicating a 2% increase year-on-year.

The FAO Cereal Price Index declined 1.7% month-on-month in March, ending an 8-month streak of gains.

On major grains, the organization said, "wheat export prices have decreased further," falling 2.4% in March, reflecting good supplies and encouraging production prospects for 2021 crops.

The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index rose by 8.0% during the same month, reaching its highest level since June 2011, supported by higher prices for palm, soybean, turnip and sunflower oils.

Dairy prices rose for the tenth month in a row, registering an increase of 3.9%. One of the factors contributing to this is milk powder, which has been boosted by rising imports in Asia, especially China, the FAO said.

The meat index rose 2.3%, but unlike all other indices, it was still slightly down year-on-year. The FAO said poultry and pork prices increased rapidly, supported by imports from Asian countries, especially China.

Sugar prices fell 4.0% month over month, but remained up 30% over the year. The FAO said the March decline was driven by the prospect of large exports from India.

Economy News _ Baghdad

The Parliamentary Economic and Investment Committee revealed a working paper and proposals to address the high prices of foodstuffs in the markets, the most prominent of which is the strengthening of the Ministry of Trade's import of basic food products, while economists believe that the high demand, the insufficiency of the local product, the change of transportation methods and the closure of outlets are additional factors that contributed to this problem.
The markets have witnessed a steady increase in prices recently, as the price of a bag of rice, despite its distribution within the ration card items, jumped from 35 thousand dinars to 51 thousand dinars, while the bag of beans rose from 42 thousand to 48 thousand dinars, accompanied by a large increase in the price Chickpeas, one kilogram of which amounted to 4,500 dinars, after it did not exceed two thousand dinars. As for tea, it also witnessed a rise from 35 thousand dinars to 42 thousand dinars per carton, and the prices of sugar, milk, meat, chicken and oils also increased.
A member of the Parliamentary Economic and Investment Committee, Hamid Al-Mousawi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah newspaper, which was followed by Al-Eqtisad News, that “the committee is working to present a working paper and proposals to address the rise in food prices, especially basic foodstuffs, with the approaching month of Ramadan. "At prices lower than what currently exists, to address the problems of supply and demand, in addition to price control and accountability for
greedy traders  ."
Moussawi called for "granting import licenses, especially for secured traders, to solve this problem and return prices to normal."

The Ministry of Trade promised to distribute the ration card items into two meals, "a late procedure that did not fulfill the purpose" because prices rose for some time and will continue even after the passage of the holy month in the event that the main causes are not addressed.

Al-Noor News / Baghdad
, Independent Representative Mansour Al-Baiji called on the government to move quickly and find solutions to what is happening from a very large increase in food prices due to the high exchange rates of the dollar, and this matter is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated completely.

He pointed out that we are living during the holy month of Ramadan, and the poor citizen is living difficult days amid the high prices of food and all other materials in front of a government silence that did not move a finger or in order to monitor the markets in general, which led to an abnormal rise in the materials.

Independent MP Mansour Al-Baiji said in a press statement that the Iraqi government must fulfill its duty and take quick steps to curb this frightening rise in the Iraqi markets, which has unnaturally harmed the Iraqi people, and not to be silent about what is going on as it is responsible for this unjustified increase in the dollar exchange rate. Which brought us to this unacceptable stage.

Al-Baiji added that the weak government performance in monitoring the markets in general led to this very large rise in the markets and unnaturally affected the citizens and the economy of the country in general. Therefore, there must be a position of the government, as it is the first and direct responsibility, and it is the one who bears all the legal, moral and humanitarian consequences of harming the Iraqi citizen because of Its wrong decision to raise the dollar exchange rate

"A breakthrough is imminent." Adviser to the Prime Minister: Three factors to curb price increases

655

{Economic: Al Furat News} The Prime Minister’s Adviser for Economic Affairs, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, identified three basic factors to limit the rise in prices of goods and commodities in the local markets.

Saleh pointed out in a press statement, "There is an emergency seasonal price gap controlled by the increase in the prices of some imported food commodities that are determined by the global stock exchanges, for reasons related to the recession that hit the global economy last year, and as a result, the costs of producing foodstuffs increased."
This coincides with the increase in global demand for food in light of the openness of the economy and international trade this year due to the expansion of vaccination levels against the Corona epidemic and the rapid opening of global markets compared to the previous year.
He added that "Iraq is currently living in the months of the agricultural transition from the winter season to the summer, which are months when foodstuffs are scarce in most, which is what drives them to increase their prices."
Despite stressing the government's responsibility to protect consumers and maintain reasonable prices, Saleh pointed to "3 basic factors to limit the rise in prices, the first of which is the provision of sufficient hard currency for the commercial sector to finance foreign trade requirements, and the second is customs taxes and reducing them to the lowest possible level, especially those related to them With basic food items. "
As for the other factor, Saleh said, "It is related to the upcoming summer agricultural season which is approaching, which will provide a great food supply in the following weeks."
It is noteworthy that the month of Ramadan falls this year in light of a significant increase in food prices, especially after the official authorities decided to reduce the dinar against the dollar.
The devaluation of the local currency cast a shadow over many low-income citizens, as not only the middle and poor classes were affected, but the decision affected merchandise merchants who import goods and pay their value in dollars.
And the pressure on Iraqis increases during Ramadan, the continuing outbreak of Corona, as the impact of the precautionary measures extended to the abolition of Ramadan traditions that had been in place for decades, specifically those inherited social customs that the Iraqis did not leave in the most difficult circumstances that the country had previously experienced.
Among the most prominent customs that the Corona pandemic has stopped is the overcrowding of markets with people who shop before breakfast.
The sellers were frustrated because of the lack of buyers in the market, and he says that the month of Ramadan every year was a month in which there was a lot of commercial movement, and it usually represented a source of great profits for traders, but the current wave of high prices changed that this year at least.
They held the government responsible for the rise in prices, noting that the devaluation of the dinar against the dollar in the state budget for 2021 - which was approved at the end of last month - led to an increase in the value of goods by more than 20%.

Economist: Poverty is much higher than what the planning declares, and exceeds this percentage

{Baghdad: Al Furat News} Economic expert Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani confirmed, today, Tuesday, that the poverty rate in the country exceeded 35% after raising the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Iraqi dinar.

Al-Mashhadani told Al-Furat News that "the statistics of the Ministry of Planning regarding poverty rates are all unofficial," pointing out that "the poverty rate after the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar is much higher than that announced by the Ministry of Planning, as it reaches more than 35%." .
The economist added, "Inflation indicators, compared to the current situation, are inaccurate, as they are measured on previous years," adding that: "Inflation is supposed to be measured at the end of last year or the beginning of this year."
Al-Mashhadani pointed out that "the situation is moving towards the unknown, and the government lacks solutions and infrastructure, in addition to the importer's market conquest and lack of national product, and this in turn has led to scarcity of job opportunities and increased poverty."

Two days ago, a spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in an interview with the Euphrates News Agency that "poverty indicators recorded an increase from 25% to 27% as initial indicators."
On March 16, the Ministry of Planning announced that the poverty rate in the country had decreased to 25 percent of the total population, after it was 31.7 percent in 2020. The
ministry's spokesman at the time stated that it was during "the first phase of the emergence of the Corona pandemic in the first half of the year." In 2020, the poverty rate increased to 31.7%. However, it retreated thanks to the procedures for lifting the curfew and returning work and activities to normal conditions, which led to a decline in the percentage to 25%.
He explained that "the number of poor people in Iraq is less than 10 million people."
The population of Iraq is 40 million and 150 thousand people, according to the latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Planning in early 2021.

A member of the committee, MP Salem Al-Tufayli, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The real treatments for the high exchange rate need time to stabilize the market ."

He added that "many MPs demanded a reduction in the dollar price, not at the previous rate, but rather gradually so that the citizen would not be affected economically," noting that "the citizen with limited income and the poor was affected by the change of the exchange rate  ."

He pointed out that "the budget supported the private sector and large projects in order to attract part of the workforce so that there would be a work movement and that his committee presented a program and recommendations to the prime minister that included supporting the private, agricultural and industrial sector," explaining that "Iraq has all the infrastructure to improve the agricultural and industrial reality, but We need honest and efficient hands .
