Iraqis perform Eid prayers in the oldest mosques in Mosul 735 Sweeteners 05/13/2021 23:20 mum Baghdad today - Nineveh On Thursday, Iraqis performed Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Al-Ateeq Mosque, or Al-Musfat Mosque, also known as the Umayyad Mosque, in the old city of Mosul. The Al-Musfy Mosque is considered an important cultural heritage as it is the first mosque in the city, the second mosque in Iraq, and the fifth in the Islamic world, but it was severely damaged and destroyed parts of it during the war against the terrorist organization "ISIS". Despite the severe damage caused to it, Iraqis were keen to perform Eid prayers there, and to present gifts of food and drinks to the worshipers. Iraqi academic Ahmed Najm said after the prayer: "The message is clear ... Al-Masyaf Mosque is an Islamic center and symbol for the region. It is not only an Islamic (symbol) but a symbol of the city as well." Volunteers from a local group campaigning to renovate the Old City worked by sweeping the floors and brushing the carpets before Eid prayers. The mosque was built during the reign of Caliph Omar bin Al-Khattab, and it was built by Arfajah bin Harthama Al-Barqi, and near it was built the House of the Emirate in 22 AH corresponding to 642 AD. It was expanded and rebuilt in the Umayyad era by Marwan bin Muhammad, and since that time it has been called the Umayyad Mosque, as well as the Al-Ateeq Mosque or Al-Misfa Mosque. 1
