Iraq .. a comprehensive ban during Eid, with the exception of the Kurdistan region

Iraq .. a comprehensive ban during Eid, with the exception of the Kurdistan region

In an attempt to avoid a major escalation that appears almost inevitable in cases of new coronavirus infection, during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the General Secretariat of the Iraqi Council of Ministers announced that it had been decided to impose a total curfew during the period between 12 and 22 May.

The Council of Ministers stated: "The decision stipulated the closure of malls, restaurants, cafeterias, cafes, cinemas, parks, event and wedding halls, swimming pools, massages, etc."

The statement added that "the council exempted from the ban the categories that must be moved during the days of the comprehensive ban (employees of the Ministry of Health, the security forces, and service departments), as well as pharmacies, foodstuff stores, fruit and vegetable stores, and bakeries, and allowing them to carry out their work until seven in the evening."

But in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the scene looked completely different. After the regional government had announced a few days ago, to impose a curfew for the three days of Eid, it retreated from this ban, announcing its lifting with a call to observe the precautionary measures, in public places and granting powers to the provinces. And the various departments, to assess the situation and determine the mechanisms for dealing with the issue.

As a result, the four governorates of the Kurdistan region, namely: Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk and Halabja, decided not to impose curfews and general closures during the days of Eid al-Fitr, unlike the rest of the Iraqi provinces.

The decision was widely criticized by commentators on social media platforms, who warned that leaving public places open during the Eid holiday, and with the influx of tourists and visitors from the rest of the country's provinces to Kurdistan, will result in a health disaster.

The Kurdistan region has recorded, over a period of weeks, an increase in the number of deadly virus infections and deaths due to them, as the average daily average number of new infections with the Corona virus in the region is hundreds of cases.
