It concerns 12% of the population .. A government plan in Iraq to address the issue of slums

Mubasher: The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced today, Thursday, a plan to address the issue of slums, which concerns 12% of the population of Iraq, while indicating that the initiation of this plan is conditional on the approval of the random housing settlement law.

"The Ministry of Planning has previously prepared an integrated plan to address the issue of slums, in cooperation with the Ministry of Housing, Reconstruction and Municipalities and the United Nations Organization for Human Settlements," Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, a spokesman for the ministry, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), indicating that "this plan represents a roadmap for treatment." The first two axes include limiting the spread of random slums, and the second is addressing. "

He added, "The initiation of the implementation of the plan is linked to the approval of the law to deal with and settle random housing in Iraq, which the ministry submitted to the House of Representatives and it was read first, and we are still waiting for a second reading to be read and then voted on," noting that "this law includes radical and realistic treatments for the slums file ".

Al-Hindawi stressed that "slums represent a major pressure factor at the level of services, whether water, electricity, sewage, health, education, etc., because they were established in places that were above the capacity to accommodate the level of existing services."

Regarding the number of slums, Al-Hindawi pointed out that "there are about 4000 slums scattered throughout Iraq, including 1000 random ones in Baghdad, meaning that a quarter of them are in the capital," explaining that "these slums are inhabited by about 3 million and 400 thousand people, who make up 12% of the total population of Iraq." .

Economy News _ Baghdad

A member of the Parliamentary Services Committee, Representative Manar Abdul-Muttalib, revealed, on Saturday, a new strategy to address the housing crisis that has struck Iraq for four consecutive decades, indicating that the slums can only solve their humanitarian situation through an alternative represented by the new Iraqi cities.
Abdul-Muttalib said in a press interview, that “Iraq is suffering from a severe housing crisis that started 4 decades ago and is striking strongly in all governorates and has created negative phenomena, most notably the slums that represent violations of public and agricultural properties due to multiple factors, the most prominent of which is the lack of plans to confront the crisis that is escalating with Visit the country's residents. ”
She added that she "presented a comprehensive strategy to address the housing crisis by building new Iraqi cities by exploiting the vast lands between the provinces by extending basic services and distributing them to the slides while giving a role to companies and the private sector in building low-cost complexes commensurate with the capabilities of the poor and those with limited income.
She pointed out that "the slums cannot solve their human condition except through an alternative represented by the new Iraqi cities that provide basic services befitting the citizens and deal with a complex file from which tens of thousands have been suffering for long years."
Iraq suffers from a severe housing crisis in most provinces, which has led to the emergence of informal settlements, especially in the vicinity of large cities, including Baghdad.
