Redenomination of the Rupiah is echoed again, this time by the Candidate for Deputy Governor of BI Aida Budiman

Redenominasi Rupiah Kembali Digaungkan, Kali Ini Oleh Calon Deputi Gubernur BI Aida Budiman

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - The candidate for Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Aida S. Budiman underwent a fit and proper test at the House of Representatives Commission XI.

In the fit and proper, members of Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR) alluded to the plan to simplify currency values or redenomination.
Simply put, this redenomination is changing the value of Rp. 1,000 to Rp. 1. Member of Commission XI DPR from the Gerindra Party faction, Gus Irawan Pasaribu, asked the candidate for Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Aida S. Budiman regarding this matter.

In the fit and proper test which was held today, Tuesday (30/11/2021), Aida stated her side with the redenomination plan.
"I agree, sir. It's positive we subtract zero. Then, this is also more efficient and in accordance with international standards, “Aida replied.

Previously, the plan for redenomination of the rupiah had been stated in the Draft Law (RUU) and had been included in the Ministry of Finance's strategic plan for 2020 - 2024 by the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani.
In the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 77/PMK.01/2020, two urgencies are explained in the formation of this bill on redenomination.

First, it creates economic efficiency in the form of accelerated transaction times, reduced risk of human error, and efficiency in pricing goods/services due to the simple number of rupiah digits.
The second is because the government wants to simplify the transaction, accounting and reporting system of the State Budget (APBN) because there are not many rupiah digits.

This country is a mess because of redenomination, Indonesia refuses to join!
NEWS - Cantika Adinda Putri, CNBC Indonesia 01 December 2021 19:28

INFOGRAFIS (Komik), Desain Baru Rupiah, Redenominasi Rupiah

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The discourse of rupiah redenomination is still being discussed by Bank Indonesia (BI) together with other financial authorities. Indonesia can also learn from Venezuela, which has recently officially redenominated its country's currency.
Head of the BI Communications Department Erwin Haryono explained that the redenomination of the rupiah must be done at the right time. So that in the future the rupiah redenomination plan can be massively socialized to the public.

"We are really looking for the right timing, which is when the economy is stable. If suddenly BI or the Ministry of Finance announce redenomination, the timing is not right," Erwin explained to CNBC Indonesia when contacted via video conference, Wednesday (1/12/2010). 2021).
Timing and socialization, said Erwin, are the keys to successful redenomination of the rupiah in the country.

The reason is, in essence, the purpose of redenomination of the rupiah itself, said Erwin, is a positive policy to simplify the rupiah, without changing the exchange rate.

Now, while waiting for the right timing and waiting for the finalization of the discussion on rupiah redenomination by BI and other authorities, Indonesia can also learn from Venezuela, which on October 1, 2021, decided to cut six zeros behind the bolivar.
To note, as of Friday (1/10/2021), the Venezuelan government officially carried out redenomination by removing the six zeros behind the bolivar currency.
The decision was enacted to reduce the impact of hyperinflation and make it easier for citizens to use bolivars.

The highest value for the new currency is 100 bolivars, worth a little less than US$ 25 or around Rp. 356 thousand (assuming Rp. 14,200/US$).
Seven bills were worth a million bolivars or the highest denomination and were very hard to come by, only able to buy one slice of bread.

"(The) bolivar will not be worth more or less; it is only to facilitate its use on a simpler monetary scale," Venezuela's central bank said after announcing the currency change.

This change is intended to make cash transactions and accounting simpler. Because it's often complicated by too many zeros.

Additionally inflation has caused banks to limit how much cash individuals can withdraw in a day. This forces people there to use United States (US) dollars or electronic payment methods.

It comes as Venezuela's gross domestic product, or GDP, has plunged 80% since 2013 due to falling oil prices and reduced production during decades of underinvestment.

Bolivar has lost almost all of its value in just over 10 years, slumping nearly 73% in 2021 alone.

While Venezuela's central bank no longer publishes inflation statistics, the International Monetary Fund predicts that the country's rate at the end of 2021 will be at 5,500%.

Bolivar lost three zeros to a redenomination scheme in 2008 under the late President Hugo Chavez. His successor, current President Nicolas Maduro, eliminated five zeros in 2018.

The bank said it would freeze operations for several hours between Thursday and Friday to make adjustments to the changes.

Bank Of Indonesia Opens Up About Changing IDR 1,000 To IDR 1, When Will It Start?
NEWS - cap, CNBC Indonesia 01 December 2021 17:10

INFOGRAFIS (Komik), Desain Baru Rupiah, Redenominasi Rupiah

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia (BI) has again opened up about the discourse on rupiah redenomination. This was mentioned again by Aida S Budiman, who had just been approved by Commission XI of the DPR to become Deputy Governor of BI.
Aida said that basically the redenomination of the rupiah is a positive policy to reduce the zero, without changing the exchange rate. So, has the rupiah redenomination process started? Listen to BI's explanation exclusively to CNBC Indonesia.

Head of the BI Communications Department Erwin Haryono explained that the idea of rupiah redenomination has always been discussed by financial policy makers, both the central government and related authorities. However, the purpose of redenomination itself, said Erwin, remains the same, namely to simplify denominations of money to make it easier and more convenient.
"So, instead of carrying around a lot of zeros, the zeros are thrown away. There are no issues other than practicality that we want to take there," Erwin explained when contacted via video conference, Wednesday (1/12/2021).

The redenomination of the rupiah, said Erwin, will not be carried out in the near future. Because at this time the economy in the country is still not recovering due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because redenomination must be done when economic conditions are good and stable.

Most importantly, said Erwin, redenomination and sanering are different things. And the sanering policy that was carried out by Indonesia in 1959 when the purchasing power of the Indonesian people soared too high, would be a serious lesson for policy makers.

"We had a traumatic experience when we made sanering. So, if this policy is carried out at a time when the economy is not yet stable, it is feared that it will create an issue," he said.

Erwin continued, if the redenomination policy was linked to sanering, it would make the public's perception of the value of the rupiah and the goal of simplifying the rupiah denomination fade.

"The meaning of practicality can be reversed, people panic, don't want to hold rupiah and so on. So, my point is that the idea of redenomination never really dies. But we are really looking for the right timing," said Erwin.

"While waiting for the right timing, massive socialization is also needed to tell the public, in fact nothing has changed (the value of the currency), apart from the missing zero (decreased)," said Erwin again.
To note, redenomination is often equated with sanering or cutting the value of currency. In fact, redenomination and sanering are two completely different policies.

Redenomination is the simplification of currency values without changing the exchange rate, to simplify denominations to make transactions easier and more convenient. So there is no need for many zeros behind the nominal number.

An example of redenomination of rupiah is for example the value of Rp. 1,000 will remain the same as Rp. 1 if it has been redenominated. For example, a person buys an item for Rp. 1,000, after redenomination, that person can still buy the item in a denomination of Rp. 1 because the value is the same.

While sanering is cutting the value of money, it can even be half. Sanering is usually done when there is economic turmoil in a country, such as hyperinflation. Cutting the value of money or sanering to cut purchasing power is very high.

An example of sanering is for example A has a fraction of Rp. 50,000, then sanering is carried out, the value becomes Rp. 25,000. For example, when A buys 2kg of chicken meat for Rp. 50,000, then after disanering that person can only buy 1 kg of chicken meat in a fraction of Rp. 50,000. Because Rp 50,000 has been converted into Rp 25,000

Suddenly the Plan of Rp. 1,000 to Rp. 1 Struggled Again, Started?
NEWS - Cantika Adinda Putri, CNBC Indonesia 30 November 2021 18:15

INFOGRAFIS, Redenominasi Mata Uang Rupiah
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Rupiah Redenomination Bill (RUU) has been proposed by the government since 2020 to be included in the Ministry of Finance's 2020-2024 strategic plan. How is it progressing?
The discourse on rupiah redenomination resurfaced when BI Assistant Governor Aida S Budiman, who is now advancing by acclamation as BI Deputy Governor, was asked by a member of Commission XI DPR RI. He agreed that rupiah redenomination should be carried out.
"The redenomination agrees, because it is positive. We have reduced the zero more and become more efficient, with international standards," he said during a due diligence before the House of Representatives Commission XI, Tuesday (30/11/2021).

To note, the Rupiah Redenomination Bill has been included in the medium term by the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and stipulated in the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 77/PMK.01/2020 concerning the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Finance for 2020-2024.

At that time, Sri Mulyani explained, there were at least two reasons why simplification of currency values had to be done.

First, to create efficiencies in the form of accelerating transaction times, reducing the risk of human error, and efficient pricing of goods/services due to the simple number of rupiah digits.

Second, to simplify the transaction system, accounting and reporting of the State Budget because there are not many or reduced numbers of rupiah digits.

However, at that time Sri Mulyani emphasized that the government and related authorities would focus first on handling and preventing the transmission of the corona virus or Covid-19.

"So now we are Covid-19 first. It's a medium term [redenomination]," Sri Mulyani said in September last year, quoted Tuesday (11/30/2021).

As an illustration, redenomination is a simplification and equalization of the value of the Rupiah. In a Bank Indonesia study, it is explained that redenomination is not a sanering or cutting of people's purchasing power through cutting the value of money.

Redenomination is usually carried out in stable economic conditions and towards a healthier direction. Meanwhile, sanering is the cutting of money in an unhealthy economy, where only the value of the money is cut.

In redenomination, both the value of money and goods, only a few zeros are removed. Thus, redenomination will simplify the writing of the value of goods and services followed by simplifying the writing of payment instruments (money). Furthermore, it will simplify the accounting system in the payment system without causing a negative impact on the economy.

BI views that the success of redenomination is largely determined by various things that are currently being studied as has been done by several countries that have succeeded in doing so.

The redenomination is usually carried out when inflation expectations are in the low range and the movement is stable, economic stability is maintained and there are guarantees for price stability as well as the needs and readiness of the community.

Digital Rupiah Becomes BI's 'Weapon' to Fight Crypto
Cantika Adinda Putri, CNBC Indonesia 30 November 2021 17:17

INFOGRAFIS, Top 5 Kripto Sepekan

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia (BI) revealed that the purpose of issuing a Central Bank Currency Digital (CBDC) is one of which is to fight crypto assets in the country.
This was said by the Assistant Governor of BI, Juda Agung in his presentation before the House of Representatives Commission XI when he conducted a feasibility test as Deputy Governor of BI, Tuesday (30/11/2021).
"In our opinion, CBDC is an effort to overcome the use of cryptocurrencies in economic transactions," he said.

Juda also considered that crypto assets should not be used as commodities in Indonesia. Because this has a very significant impact on the financial system.

Crypto assets, which are currently under the supervision of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (CoFTRA), also assessed by Juda should not be in CoFTRA's domain.

Juda hopes that crypto assets as commodities can be reviewed and regulated in the Draft Law on Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (P2SK).

"What is interesting now is that cryptocurrencies are under CoFTRA. We need to examine this in the P2SK Bill, and it needs to be properly positioned, meaning cryptocurrencies are commodities. Even though the implications are quite significant on the financial system," he said during a due diligence test with Commission XI DPR, Tuesday ( 30/11/2021).

"Agreed that it needs to be re-examined and it should not be in CoFTRA, supervision of this crypto exchange," Juda continued.

Although, said Juda, currently crypto is not widely used as a transaction, even in the world it is used as an investment instrument, but BI sees the need to make people understand that currently crypto assets are not safe, because there is no underlying.

Therefore, said Juda, the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) aka digital rupiah is BI's efforts to combat crypto transactions. With this digital rupiah, Juda is optimistic that people will switch.

"With crypto, you can make digital payment transactions. With the CBDC, people will believe in CBDC, Indonesia's digital rupiah. People will trust the central bank more than crypto," he said.

Juda also explained that if the digital rupiah was issued later, the existence of paper money and coins would not be 'doomsday' or replaced. Because the portion of circulation will be adjusted to the needs of the community.

The concept is certainly able to reduce risks, such as disturbances to the system or worse, power outages.

"The CBDC implementation can be carried out in stages. A few percent of 20% of the money in circulation, it is not fully replaced, it is still paper money and digital notes," he explained.

"If everything is digital, it will be a big risk, so it must be done, there must still be coins," said Juda, who is now the Head of BI's Macroprudential Policy Department.

Lots of News about Digital Rupiah, Coins & Papers What's the Fate?
TECH - Cantika Adinda Putri, CNBC Indonesia 01 December 2021 07:00

Bank Indonesia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia (BI) guarantees the existence of banknotes and coins, although later digital rupiah or Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) will appear. The distribution portion will be adjusted to the needs of the community.
This was conveyed by Juda Agung, candidate for Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) during a fit and proper test with Commission XI, DPR RI, yesterday.
"The CBDC implementation can be carried out in stages. A few percent of 20% of the money in circulation, it is not fully replaced, it is still paper money and digital notes," he explained.

The concept is certainly able to reduce risks, such as disturbances to the system or worse, power outages.

"If everything is digital, it will be a big risk, so it must be done, there must still be coins," said Juda, who is now the Head of BI's Macroprudential Policy Department.

Juda realized that digital transactions were increasing rapidly. In BI's 2021 annual report, it is stated that electronic money transactions in 2021 are estimated to reach Rp. 40,000 trillion or will increase by 41.2% on an annual basis (year on year / yoy). And will again grow 16.3% (yoy) to reach Rp 337 trillion in 2022
Meanwhile, e-commerce transactions this year are predicted to reach Rp 403 trillion or grow 51.6% (yoy) and will continue to increase in 2022 to reach Rp 530 trillion or grow 31.4% (yoy).

In line with the development of the digital economy, digital banking payment transactions in 2021 are also projected to increase by 46.1% (yoy) or reach Rp. 40,000 trillion and continue to increase by 21.8% to reach Rp. 48,600 trillion in 2022.

"With CDBC, the central bank continues to maintain the effectiveness of monetary policy and maintain financial system stability and encourage financial inclusion," he explained.

"With CDBC, the central bank continues to maintain the effectiveness of monetary policy and maintain financial system stability and encourage financial inclusion," he explained.

There are two approaches to digitizing rupiah. First, direct (one tier) or indirect (two tier). Direct said Juda could be through households or corporations that get tokens from the central bank.

"The indirect goes through 2 stages, the first tier is banking and users, both household and corporate. In our opinion, the second is more appropriate, such as the current circulation of banknotes and coins. The central bank circulates through banks and the public gets banknotes and coins from these banks, " he concluded.

Severe Inflation, Venezuela Cuts 6 Zeros in Its Currency

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Venezuelan government has officially carried out redenomination by removing six zeros behind the bolivar currency. This decision was enacted to reduce the impact of hyperinflation and make it easier for citizens to use bolivars.
As of Friday (1/10/2021), the highest redenomination for the new currency is 100 bolivars, worth slightly less than US$ 25 or around Rp. 356 thousand (assuming Rp. 14,200/US$).

Indonesians Optimistic on the Economy: Central Bank

Diana Mariska

Bank Indonesia

Bank Of Indonesia

TheIndonesia.id - Recent survey revealed a rising optimism among Indonesians on national economic outlook. According to report released by Bank Indonesia, Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) in November rose from the figure in October.

Director of communications at the central bank Erwin Haryono said the finding indicated public trust for a growing economy in Indonesia, while the country continues to adapt to the ongoing pandemic.

“[The optimism] is reflected in the Consumer Confidence Index in November at 118.5, higher than the 113.4 in October,” Haryono said in a statement as quoted by Antara news agency on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

Generally, a figure below 100 indicates rather pessimistic view on the economic conditions, and figure above suggests consumer’s confidence.

The November Index increased in all spending categories and age groups.

Haryono said the increasing confidence is based on several factors, which are mainly triggered by more mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The increase is in line with the improving economic activities and income as mobility increased due to the easing of restrictions,” he explained.

The consumer’s perceptions of current income and employment availability improved, based on the survey.

Meanwhile, Consumer Expectation Index, or CEI, in November also increased to 137.8 from 134.9 in October. Among some of the factors is the generally increasing expectations for business activities as well as employment availability in the coming six months.

TheIndonesia.id - German automotive giant Mercedes-Benz is set to produce Axor  trucks in Indonesia from April 2022. The vehicle, which has complied with Euro 4 emission standard, will be manufactured in factory in Wanaherang, Bogor, West Java province.

PT Daimler Commercial Vehicles Manufacturing Indonesia (DCVMI) as the sole entity that oversees the distribution of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, has appointed PT Daimler Commercial Vehicles Indonesia (DCVI) to produce the Axor trucks starting next year.

President director of DCVI Jung Woo Park said the two companies are committed to support Indonesian government’s plan to implement the Euro 4 emission standard for diesel vehicles. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources previously said that the eco-friendly policy will be applicable in April 2022.

“To support the government, we’re committed to the transition process through improvement to our products. We’re also pleased to start the new chapter of a more environmentally-friendly Indonesia by creating selective catalytic reduction (SCR) dan Adblue technologies,” Park said in a statement on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

He revealed that Mercedes-Benz Euro 4 Axor has a combination of technologies that is unique for Indonesia as the trucks are equipped with engines that have been proven to provide optimal performance with the fuel in Indonesia. Meanwhile, SCR technology will reduce emission after process in combustion chamber.

“Therefore, we can enjoy the best condition and performance during operation. Also, we extend the interval for maintenance to 50,000 km for Euro 4 trucks by adding a system that will keep the engine oil clean,” Park added.

DCVI also made several exterior and interior adjustments to the Mercedes-Benz Axor series as well as a number of technical updates to three Axor variants: Mercedes-Benz Axor 2528R/5700, 2523R/4500 dan 2523R/5700.

The new Axor’s gross vehicle weight rating increases to 26,500 kg from 25,000 kg.  Capacity of front and rear axles also increases from 6,000-19,000 kg to 6,500-20,000 kg.

The new trucks use 11.00-20 bias tires, which is in accordance with market requirement on tire capacity as it’s also more cost-efficient.

Ministry of Trade: Seven US importers bought Indonesian products worth IDR 2.51 trillion
Faisal Yunianto
Tue, 14 December 2021 3.56 PM

eee97d41ebe34287126db6fd921a93d0

Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade Suhanto said that there were seven importers or "buyers" from the United States (US) who bought up Indonesian products, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) products, worth US$175 million or Rp.2.51 trillion.

"These buyers have played an important role in the Indonesian export market, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic," Suhanto said in a statement received in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Suhanto said this at the "Trade with Remarkable Indonesia Awards 2021" award ceremony at the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) Office in Los Angeles, USA.

This proud achievement makes Indonesia-US trade position more convincing. This can be seen from the trade data for the January-October 2021 period which is increasing. The total trade between Indonesia and the US has increased by 30.99 percent compared to the same period in 2020 with a value of 21.9 billion US dollars.

For this achievement, the Indonesian government rewarded a US buyer by awarding the "Trade with Remarkable Indonesia Awards 2021." They are Solaris Paper, Western Plastics, America's Gold, Miss Lola, The North Face, Iguana Import Gallery, and BKG Service Corporation.

According to Suhanto, Indonesia appreciates all importers from the US who have consistently imported Indonesian products. Although only some have utilized the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) scheme, the Ministry of Trade continues to encourage the maximum use of GSP, in line with the Indonesian government's efforts to maintain Indonesia's status under the GSP.

Suhanto added that the imported products include furniture (BKG Service Corp), clothing (Miss Lola and The North Face), handicrafts (Iguana Import), tissue paper (Solaris Paper), PVC cling film (Western Plastics), and jewelery (America's Gold).

There are three criteria used in the selection of recipients of this award. The first criterion, the importer under the GSP. In an effort to increase exports under the GSP scheme, there are three loyal buyers of Indonesian products, including Western Plastics as a supplier of PVC cling film products with cutting boxes, aluminum wraps, and containers; America's Gold as a jewelry company in Los Angeles that specializes in selling 10 and 14 carat gold jewelry; and tissue paper company Solaris Paper which supplies retailers and the Away-From-Home (AFH) market.

In 2021, Western Plastics will buy products from Indonesia worth US$3.27 million; America's Gold purchased products from UBS company for US$30.8 million; and Solaris Paper purchased products from Sinarmas for US$ 86.5 million.

The second criterion, importers of Indonesia's top export products in 2021, namely furniture, furniture and clothing products. These importers include outdoor activity product company The North Face, headquartered in Alameda, California; traditional handicraft and furniture store Iguana Imports in Long Beach, California; and the contractor BKG Service Corporation in collaboration with hotel owners, investors, and property management companies.

In 2021, The North Face purchased outdoor clothing from Pan Brothers for $46 million; Iguana Import Gallery bought from Indonesian SMEs, such as D'Art Corporation, for US$450 thousand; and BKG Service Corp. purchased furniture from American Furniture Manufacturing for 8.35 million US dollars.

The third criterion, importers of SME products that already have their own brand. Miss Lola is an e-commerce site that offers a wide range of clothing products for women. In 2021, Miss Lola will buy products from Indonesian SMEs that already have their own brands, such as Everina, for 10 thousand US dollars. The award to Miss Lola is an effort by the Ministry of Trade to support the reputation and export performance of MSMEs in Indonesia.

Blinken in Indonesia as US seeks to shore up Southeast Asia ties

JAKARTA: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a strong commitment to Indonesia on Monday (Dec 13), a senior official said, as he kicked off a Southeast Asia trip aimed at strengthening ties with a region that has become a strategic arena for Washington and Beijing.

In his first trip to the region since US President Joe Biden took office in January, Blinken met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the first of several top officials he will see on a four-day tour that includes Malaysia and Thailand.

Summarising the meeting with Jokowi, as the president is known, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said Blinken showed a keen interest in partnering with their country, especially in infrastructure.

"The US commitment was very noticeable," Retno told reporters.

Southeast Asia is a key stage for a rivalry between the United States and China, with a heated struggle for influence as the Biden administration seeks to reconnect with a region to which US commitment was questioned under President Donald Trump.

Blinken congratulated Jokowi on Indonesia's G20 presidency and expressed support for its Indo-Pacific leadership role, as a "strong proponent of the rules-based international order", State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, adding human rights, the pandemic and the climate crisis were also discussed.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's biggest economy and its most populous nation. It is the third-largest democracy in the world, and also home to a third of its rainforests.

Blinken will deliver a speech on US Indo-Pacific strategy on Tuesday in the capital Jakarta, among other events, before meetings in Malaysia and Thailand on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Blinken will pursue Biden's aim of elevating engagement with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc and discuss the president's vision for an Indo-Pacific economic framework, a top US diplomat for Asia said ahead of the trip.

The United States has also been pushing back against Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea, a conduit for US$3 trillion of annual trade, and accuses its vast coastguard fleet of bullying countries including Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia by disrupting energy and fishing activities.

China claims almost the entire sea as its own, and has rejected US actions as interference by an outside power.

The Biden administration sees closer engagement in Southeast Asia as vital to its efforts to push back against China's growing power, but Trump's withdrawal from a regional trade deal in 2017 has limited its ability to exert economic influence, while Beijing has sought to bolster its trade ties.

The administration has yet to spell out what exactly Biden's envisaged economic framework will entail.

Jakarta: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Indonesia on Monday, kicking off a visit to Southeast Asia aimed at strengthening ties in a region that has become a strategic battleground between Washington and Beijing.

In his first Southeast Asia trip since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in January, Blinken will be in Malaysia and Thailand this week after visiting Indonesia's capital Jakarta, where he will meet President Joko Widodo and will deliver a speech on U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy on Tuesday.

Meeting the US Foreign Minister, Luhut discusses environmentally friendly investment opportunities
Ahmad Buchori Wednesday, 15 December 2021 12:56 PM

c961f9d2f5e3bf41cf3045f50101458f

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan held a bilateral meeting with the United States Minister of Foreign Affairs Antony Blinken, Tuesday (14/12), where the two discussed investment opportunities in various sectors with an environmentally friendly approach.

"One of the things offered is investment in environmentally friendly port projects," Luhut said in a written statement in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Specifically in the oil and gas sector, Luhut explained Indonesia's rapid development over the past seven years, one of which was the development of the Green Industrial Park in North Kalimantan, which is the largest green industrial area in Indonesia.

"The downstream nickel industry in Indonesia is currently focusing on stainless steel production with the next target being battery components," he said.

Luhut also emphasized Indonesia's role and commitment in preventing climate change.

Luhut hopes that the United States can build a solar panel industry in Indonesia as a support for the development of sustainable energy sources.

"Indonesia has a strong commitment to curb climate change. We also have great potential for Carbon Pricing. I think that in the last five years, our efforts to increase carbon pricing have been the best," he said.

Based on the data he presented, Indonesia has 75-80 percent of the world's total carbon credits. This figure comes from rainforests, mangroves, peatlands, and coral reefs.

As part of Indonesia's commitment to the Paris Agreement and Net Zero Emissions, the government is currently focusing on regulations related to climate change and emission reductions.

Responding to Luhut's request, Foreign Minister Blinken said that his country was ready to cooperate with Indonesia regarding the semi-conductor industry and other minerals.

"We will work hard to cooperate with Indonesia, and together we can create a supply chain in this industrial sector," he said.

Blinken hopes that together with Indonesia can produce efficient cooperation. Because according to him there are many things that can be resolved quickly.

"I agree that Indonesia has enormous potential and there are many sectors that can be collaborated. Such as in the investment sector for infrastructure, health, digital, and renewable energy," said Blinken.

Blinken also expressed his hope that a number of new collaborations could be established during the series of activities of the G20 Summit.

"Our government is currently discussing who from our side will be appointed to discuss each of these sectors with Indonesia," he continued.

Blinken also hopes for support for US companies that wish to invest in Indonesia. The American government has a specific framework for investment development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We will certainly encourage American companies to be able to see various investment potentials in a number of sectors in Indonesia," said Blinken.

we will always be a strategic partner for all countries that open opportunities for cooperation with Indonesia, including the United States of America

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan received a visit from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as well as President Joe Biden's "right hand man" at his office in Jakarta, Tuesday.

During Blinken's first visit to Indonesia, the two discussed six strategic partnerships in the fields of health, investment, trade, infrastructure, climate change, and digital transformation which are currently in the spotlight during the pandemic.

"I conveyed to Mr. Blinken that Indonesia today is changing from being known and moving so fast to take advantage of the potential we have. I explained that we want to be part of the global supply chain in the downstream sector of natural resources and I also invite them to join into this value-adding project," he said in his latest post on his personal Instagram account @luhut.pandjaitan in Jakarta, Tuesday.

According to Luhut, in addition to infrastructure and economic recovery, Blinken has a strong commitment to establish partnerships with Indonesia, especially in environmental conservation.

Therefore, Luhut also emphasized Indonesia's commitment to always maintain its commitment to the Paris Agreement and Net Zero Emissions with a focus on policies that care about climate change and emission reductions.

These policies include restoration of mangroves and peatlands, as well as the mechanism for energy transition from fossil fuels to new and renewable energy (EBT).

Luhut emphasized that with economic transformation efforts that focus on developing value-added industries, Indonesia will grow stronger after the pandemic.

"Therefore, we will always be a strategic partner for all countries that open up opportunities for cooperation with Indonesia, including the United States," he said.

Luhut also hopes that there will be room for improvement, like a strategic partnership between the two countries. He also hopes for a good partnership for a real impact on the people of Indonesia.

"And like a strategic partnership, of course there will be room for improvement. In accordance with President Joko Widodo's mandate to his ministers that a good and respectful partnership relationship will always be pursued as long as it has great benefits for the welfare of all Indonesian people," concluded Luhut.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi (right) received a visit from the United States Foreign Minister Antony Blinken (left) at the Pancasila Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (14/12/2021).

Jakarta (ANTARA) - United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Jakarta on Tuesday described three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed by the US and Indonesian governments.

He said the three MoUs reflected the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries and as a follow-up to the talks between US President Joe Biden and Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Glasgow last month.

"We have a strong commitment to a strategic partnership with Indonesia, and a strong commitment to our involvement throughout the Indo-Pacific region," said Blinken when delivering a press statement with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

The first cooperation signed by the two foreign ministers is an extension of the MoU on maritime cooperation which will be valid until 2026 and includes cooperation in maritime security, marine resources, fisheries conservation and management, as well as maritime safety and navigation.

“In a region where so much is happening at sea … and at a critical time when the climate crisis threatens waterways, coasts and marine life, maritime cooperation is more important than ever,” said Blinken.

Second, the US and Indonesia renewed a bilateral agreement on the Peace Corps Program run by the US government to provide international social and economic development assistance, including in Indonesia.

Through this program, said Blinken, American volunteers have worked with partners in Indonesia to teach English, train teachers, live with Indonesian families, and learn the local language.

"This is an extraordinary program that represents the friendship between our countries," he said.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will explain the US strategy for the Indo-Pacific during his visit in Jakarta on December 13-14 2021.

U.S. Deputy Assistant President and Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell said that Blinken's visit to Indonesia, which will be followed by visits to Malaysia and Thailand, underscores the United States' commitment to stronger cooperation with countries in the region.

"He (Blinken) will launch elements of the Indo-Pacific strategy that will enhance the US role in Southeast Asia," Campbell said at the virtual opening of The 9th US-Indonesia Investment Summit on Monday.

Emphasizing that the Indo-Pacific cooperation strategy should be open and optimistic, Campbell explained that the United States seeks to engage in a broader cooperation agenda ranging from disease management, security, freedom of navigation, to increased trade and investment.

According to him, the US wants to send a clear message to play an important and sustainable role in the Indo-Pacific, with a wider field of cooperation.

"So this is not an engagement that would offer a military approach, our goal is to have a more diverse and balanced approach," Campbell said.

Throughout the Indo-Pacific, he said, the US is trying to carry out basic diplomacy and high-level approaches by many members of the government, including Foreign Minister Blinken.

During his visit to the region, Blinken will also discuss the planned visit of ASEAN leaders to Washington to discuss issues of mutual concern and future cooperation between the US and ASEAN.

In Jakarta, Blinken will also follow up on talks between US President Joe Biden and Indonesian President Joko Widodo which have been held several times.

"When we talk about the most important countries to measure the results of our (cooperation), then the partnership with Indonesia is considered very important," said Campbell.

Blinken ensures vaccine distribution is based on needs, not politics
 Tuesday, 14 December 2021 14:53 WIB'

Blinken pastikan distribusi vaksin berdasarkan kebutuhan bukan politik

Screenshot - United States Secretary of State Antony J Blinken delivered a speech at the University of Indonesia during the webinar "The 9th US-Indonesia Investment Summit" which was monitored online in Jakarta, Tuesday (14/12/2021).

Jakarta (ANTARA) - United States Secretary of State Antony J Blinken has ensured that the distribution of vaccines throughout the world, including Indonesia, is based on needs, not politics.

“We provide this assistance free of charge and there is no intention behind it. Through COVAX, we ensure that vaccines and other medical devices are evenly distributed based on need, not politics," said Blinken in his speech at the University of Indonesia which was monitored online during the webinar of the 9th US-Indonesia Investment Summit in Jakarta, Tuesday.

He said the US had distributed 300 million doses of vaccine worldwide, of which 100 million were to the Indo-Pacific region and 25 million doses had been imported to Indonesia.

By the end of 2022, he said, the US would donate more than 1.2 billion doses to the world.

"We provided more than US$2.8 billion in additional assistance to the Indo-Pacific region, including US$77 million (Rp1.1 billion) to Indonesia, ranging from personal protective equipment, and oxygen for hospitals," he said.

Blinken said the US is also cooperating with financing, both to produce, distribute, and inject as many vaccines as possible to end the pandemic.

India has committed to produce an additional five billion doses by the end of 2020.

Meanwhile, South Korea and Thailand are pursuing their production and encouraging the private sector to get involved.

"Last month, we launched the Global COVID Core which is a coalition of leading companies that will provide the expertise, tools and capabilities to support vaccine logistics in developing countries," he said.

He explained that the program could reach vaccinations to remote areas.

"This is important to do because many of them don't get the vaccine because the vaccine distribution doesn't get there," he said.

While vaccination is being intensified, Blinken said his party is also focusing on improving the health system in the Indo-Pacific region.

He said the US had been working with various parties to strengthen the health system in the region for decades and, within the ASEAN region alone, the US had invested more than US$3.5 billion (approximately Rp50.2 trillion) over the past 20 years.

"Indonesia is currently preparing several strategic projects that include the development of renewable energy and the utilization of smart technology. As Indonesia moves towards sustainable development and a smart future, we would like to invite Huawei, as an expert who is very knowledgeable in their field, to participate in these sectors," Luhut said in a written statement, Wednesday.

The discussion is in line with Indonesia's target in July 2021 to declare carbon reductions in 2060 or a decade faster than the previous estimate.

In addition, President Joko Widodo has also set digitalization as a top priority for development in order to encourage the growth of the digital economy and accelerate the development of the high-tech industrial sector.

During the meeting, Huawei's Rotating Chairman Guo Ping welcomed the visit of the Coordinating Minister for MARVES and again welcomed the good initiative of strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and Huawei.

“Indonesia is blessed with various potentials to become a high-tech industry. As part of Indonesia's digital ecosystem, Huawei will focus on technological innovation and make every effort to support Indonesia in building a solid ICT infrastructure and succeeding in digitization through the application of cutting-edge digital technologies, such as 5G, AI, Cloud and IoT," said Guo Ping.

Guo Ping also added that he would support efforts to utilize renewable energy in Indonesia through his digital technology to also encourage green transformation in the country.

Huawei estimates that in the next 30 to 40 years, more and more intelligent, low-carbon technologies will be adopted.

Digital technology is needed to increase intelligence, while power electronics technology is also crucial to reduce carbon footprint.

In the global order, the energy industry will be more oriented to the use of the latest technology to create efficiency, instead of relying entirely on the availability of resources with all their limitations.

In addition to holding meetings, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs also visited Huawei campuses in Shenzhen and Dongguan, accompanied by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Budi Gunadi Sadikin and the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia Muhammad Lutfi.

Digital talent development is one of Huawei's main contributions. In 2020, Huawei has launched a digital talent development program in collaboration with the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) with the aim of developing 100,000 digital talents within 5 years.

In the first two years of the program, Huawei has succeeded in realizing half of its overall target set to be achieved within 5 years, as a testament to its seriousness and persistence in supporting Indonesia's vision.

In addition to developing digital talent, Huawei also plays an important role in supporting the Indonesian government against the COVID-19 pandemic, especially through technological solutions, ranging from the construction of emergency telecommunications infrastructure for quarantine zones, the provision of WIFI6 technology for remote health services, to the use of cloud solutions and Huawei AI to speed up diagnosis of COVID-19 patients

Not only that, Huawei also facilitates digital transformation and distance learning by providing Huawei Cloud accounts to 500 universities.

Huawei also supports MSMEs to digitally transform to deal with high customer demand for online transactions.
