New headquarters of the Central Bank of Iraq

New headquarters of the Central Bank of Iraq

On the Tigris River in Baghdad, the new headquarters of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) is being built according to a design by Zaha Hadid Architects. The project comprises a 172 m high tower and a sculptural podium. The tower has a narrow form up to level 7 and then widens towards the top. The geometry placed special demands on the structural and façade designers – in addition to very high wind loads, seismic activity in the region also had to be taken into account. Another challenge was the client’s requirements for the façade’s resistance to bomb explosions – our many years of experience in the field of “bomb blast engineering” once again paid off here. Werner Sobek is responsible for the façade consulting, the BIM 3rd party review and interface management, the explosion protection consulting and planning as well as the supervision of the construction and the outdoor facilities.
