Economy News - Baghdad

The Ministry of Electricity revealed that Minister Majid Hantoush will discuss in the Iranian capital Tehran next week the gas file, in addition to the Iranian debt owed by Iraq, which amounts to $ 4 billion.

"The Minister of Electricity, Majid Hantoush, will head next week at the head of a ministerial delegation to Iran, to discuss with officials there regarding cooperation and coordination between the two sides in the field of electricity," ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Abadi said in press statements.

"The Iraqi ministerial delegation in Tehran will discuss with Iranian officials the issue of stabilizing Iranian gas supplies prepared for production plants in Iraq, with the approaching summer season, and everyone is notified that the electricity file in Iraq has become a ruling and vital file," Al-Abadi said.

He added that "Iran is currently exporting 20 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, and this amount does not meet Iraq's need to operate the electrical stations that depend on gas, which reach the actual need for them during the summer, to 70 million standard cubic feet per day."

He stressed that "the Minister of Electricity will also discuss the file of debts owed to Iran by Iraq, which amount to about $ 4 billion."

Although Iraq is an oil country, it depends heavily on Iran in the field of energy, as it imports a third of its consumption needs of gas and electricity; This is due to its outdated infrastructure that makes it unable to achieve self-sufficiency in energy to meet the needs of its population of 40 million.

The end of the US extension

Last January, the United States extended the exemption granted to Iraq from the sanctions imposed on Iran in the energy field, which allowed Baghdad to continue importing gas and electricity from Tehran until this April.

Since the United States re-imposed sanctions on Iran at the end of 2018, the US administration has been granting Iraq one exemption after another, pending finding other suppliers.

The Minister of Electricity from Iran: We reached good agreements ... and he compares the consumption of the two peoples

{Local: Al Furat News} The Minister of Electricity, Majid Mahdi Hantoush, announced that good agreements had been reached with the Islamic Republic of Iran to supply Iraq with the energy it needs in the field of electricity and gas.

On the sidelines of his meeting with Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian in Tehran, Hantoush said that the very good cooperation between Iran and Iraq is not hidden from anyone.
He continued: In the past years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has provided a lot of assistance to supply Iraq with the fuel needed by power plants and to export electricity to this country.
The Minister of Electricity indicated that he discussed with the Iranian side all mechanisms and solutions for energy supply, stressing the continuous cooperation.
He also referred to discussing the payment of Iraqi debts to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the gas and electricity sectors, stressing the continuation of cooperation between the two countries.
The Iraqi minister said that the lack of electricity in the country is equivalent to three times the demand for imports, and the government is unable to respond to these demands and cannot keep pace with the increase in demand, so the Iraqi government must import energy to meet its needs and not to face a shortage of fuel for power plants.
The Iraqi Minister of Electricity added: This year, we were able to cover the consumption of 22 thousand megawatts of electricity in Iraq, while at the height of electricity consumption this number will increase from 22 thousand megawatts to 28 thousand megawatts.
Hantoush said: If we compare the per capita electricity consumption in Iran and Iraq, the Iraqi citizen consumes six times what the Iranian people consume, and this is due to the high temperature in Iraq.
He continued, saying: The Ministry of Electricity in Iraq has conducted, in this regard, a comparison between the amount of energy consumption in Tehran and Baghdad with the Ministry of Energy in Iran.
According to the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Iranian companies are now operating in Iraq in all fields, including supplying and operating power stations.
He said: It may not be necessary to sign a new memorandum, explaining that the memorandum is not binding, but the agreements are binding, and these agreements are under implementation between Iranian and Iraqi companies.
According to Hantoush, Iranian companies are now working in Iraqi power plants, and there is intense cooperation between the two countries in this field.
The Iraqi Minister of Electricity pointed out that energy supplies from Iran are continuing continuously, and the problem that we faced was in the field of supplying fuel to power stations, explaining: Of course, during this visit we reached good agreements on this issue and payment methods.
Electricity Minister Majid Juntosh arrived in Tehran yesterday to meet officials from the Iranian oil and energy ministries.
