  • Rep. Liz Cheney has not ruled out a possible presidential run in the future.

  • "I'm not ruling anything in or out - ever is a long time," Cheney told The New York Post.

  • Cheney previously broke with her party and voted in favor of Trump's impeachment.

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the highest-ranked Republican woman in Congress, left open the possibility of running for president during an interview with The New York Post published Monday.

"I'm not ruling anything in or out - ever is a long time," Cheney told the outlet when asked if she would ever consider throwing her hat in the ring in the future.

Cheney did not specifically weigh in on a potential 2024 bid, but she did allude to certain GOP members who she believes should not be on the ballot in the upcoming presidential race.

"I do think that some of our candidates who led the charge, particularly the senators who led the unconstitutional charge, not to certify the election, you know, in my view that's disqualifying," Cheney told The New York Post. She was referring to a group of Republican lawmakers who challenged the 2020 presidential election results when Congress met to certify President Joe Biden's win on January 6, the same day as the Capitol insurrection. Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas, supporters of former President Donald Trump who are rumored to be eyeing the Republican nomination in 2024, are among those politicians.

Cheney added that "adherence to the Constitution" and "adherence to your oath has got to be at the top of the list" for a 2024 run.

Cheney sparked outrage from pro-Trump groups in the aftermath of the Capitol riot when she broke with her party and voted in favor of his impeachment on a charge of "incitement of insurrection." As the No. 3 House Republican, many members of the caucus decried the move and sought to remove her from her leadership post, but the effort was unsuccessful.

Despite the backlash from her own party, Cheney has not shied away from speaking out publicly against Trump and has taken a markedly different tone toward him compared to her Republican colleagues, such as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has continued to embrace Trump. On Monday, Cheney told reporters that McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are currently the leaders of the Republican Party - not Trump.

Trump says Liz Cheney is a 'warmongering fool' who would 'embarrass her family by running for President'

Donald Trump has hit out at GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, labelling her a "warmongering fool" who would "embarrass her family" if she runs for President.

The former president used a statement sent out by his leadership PAC on Tuesday to attack Cheney, who has been a persistent critic of his in recent months

Trump suggested that she is planning to drop out of her re-election race in Wyoming, ahead of a potential presidential run in 2024.

"Liz Cheney is polling sooo low in Wyoming, and has sooo little support, even from the Wyoming Republican Party, that she is looking for a way out of her Congressional race," Trump said.

He added: "She'll either be yet another lobbyist or maybe embarrass her family by running for President, in order to save face. This warmongering fool wants to stay in the Middle East and Afghanistan for another 19 years, but doesn't consider the big picture-Russia and China!"

Trump's comments come after Cheney failed to run out a potential presidential run when asked by reporters this week.

"I'm not ruling anything in or out - never is a long time," Cheney told the New York Post.

Cheney has become a thorn in Trump's side since he lost the presidential election in November and was one of less than a dozen Republican lawmakers to call for his impeachment following the Capitol insurrection.

She has also called for the Republicans to take a new approach from the Trump years.

"We cannot become the party of QAnon," she said in February.

"We cannot become the party of Holocaust denial. We cannot become the party of white supremacy."

Cheney: 'Wishful thinking' by Trump she won't seek 4th term

MEAD GRUVER
Wed, April 28, 2021, 6:35 PM

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Speculation by former President Donald Trump that she won't seek re-election next year is “wishful thinking," Liz Cheney said Wednesday.

Trump suggested Tuesday that Wyoming's congresswoman would become a lobbyist or “maybe embarrass her family by running for president” to save face amid criticism for her vote to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Cheney struck down any such ideas in a call with Wyoming reporters.

“I am absolutely dedicated and committed to winning my primary and earning the votes of the people of Wyoming,” Cheney said.

“It's a critical time to make sure that we have the strongest person in Washington fighting on behalf of our values, fighting on behalf of our energy industry, our ag industry, our families,” added Cheney, the elder daughter of former Vice President **** Cheney.

House Republicans gather in Fla. for GOP policy retreat, Trump not invited

House Republicans gather in Orlando for their annual GOP policy retreat. GOP conference chair Liz Cheney says one of the party's main focus is tracking "back the voters that we lost in 2020."

Cheney joined nine Republican representatives and all Democrats in the U.S. House in voting to impeach. She has called it a vote of her conscience against Trump's betrayal of his office and oath to uphold the Constitution.

In February, the Wyoming Republican Party central committee censured Cheney for her vote. Four Republicans already are running against her in 2022.

They include two state legislators, Sen. Anthony Bouchard of Cheyenne and Rep. Chuck Gray of Casper, who aren't well known beyond Wyoming's two biggest cities. Two other Republican opponents are even less well-known. Wyoming's top elected officials have either voiced support for Cheney or not weighed in on her impeachment vote.

Cheney raised $1.54 million in the first quarter of 2021, her biggest quarterly haul since her first U.S. House campaign in 2016. Bouchard raised about $334,000 and Gray $164,000, including $133,000 from himself.

Cheney insisted Republicans remain united on their goal of retaking House and Senate majorities in 2022.

“We have to return to being of ideas and substance an policy, give people hope. And also convey that people can trust us, they can count on us, that we are the party of responsible, confident, conservative leadership," she said Wednesday. "I think on all of those issues we've got real unity.”

GOP Rep. Claims Trump Wing Is Pushing to Oust Cheney Because She Won’t ‘Lie’

House Republicans are increasingly frustrated with Representative Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.) amid an ongoing spat over her views on former President Trump, The Hill reported on Saturday.

GOP lawmakers have warned that Cheney could lose her position as chairwoman of the House Republican Conference.

“If a prerequisite for leading our conference is continuing to lie to our voters, then Liz is not the best fit,” Representative Anthony Gonzalez (R., Ohio) told The Hill. Gonzalez was one of ten GOP representatives, including Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump following the Capitol riot on January 6.

“Liz isn’t going to lie to people. Liz is going to say what she believes,” Gonzalez added. “She’s going to stand on principle. And if that’s going to be distracting for folks, she’s not the best fit. I wish that weren’t the case.”

Cheney has continued to criticize Trump since the Capitol riot. While House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) has labeled Trump the head of the Republican Party, Cheney told reporters last week that McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) were the leaders of the party.

Representative Jim Banks (R., Ind.), head of the Republican Study Committee, said Cheney’s comments were “sideline distractions” that could threaten GOP unity.

“I think a lot of us would like to see her join the team, be on the same team, same mission, the same focus. And at this point, that’s what many of us are questioning,” Banks told Axios last week.

“As we’re focused on unifying the Republican conference and our mission to win back the majority, she is focused on the past and proving a point,” one lawmaker told The Hill on condition of anonymity. “She is alienating herself from the conference, and I have to imagine if she doesn’t resign there will be a new vote in the near future and the result will be lopsided in the opposite direction of what it was before.”

Sad the GOP has become what it is today! Nothing like it was twenty years ago. It has gone from conservative to radical conservative. And if you’re not radical conservative you are a Rino. The GOP is killing itself!

No I mean eliminating the middle of the road Republicans from its ranks. Calling them rinos etc. Let one Republican say one thing against Trump and he or she is ousted by the radical side. In the last five years the Republicans have lost the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. Keep alienating the middle of the road Republicans if you think it makes the party better. Liz Cheney says Trump is 'poisoning our democratic system' after he tries to label the 2020 election he lost 'the big lie'

  • Donald Trump announced his intention to redefine the phrase "the Big Lie," which has been used for months to describe his election lies.

  • Rep. Liz Cheney on Monday became a lone voice pushing back on Trump's attempt to repurpose the phrase.

  • "The 2020 presidential election was not stolen," Cheney tweeted. "Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE."

Former President Donald Trump on Monday announced his intention to redefine the phrase "the Big Lie," which Democrats have used for several months to describe Republican misinformation about the 2020 election.

In a press release emailed out to supporters, Trump declared, "The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!"

Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-highest ranking House Republican, became a lone voice pushing back on Trump's attempt to repurpose the phrase, saying his continued lies about the election were "poisoning our democratic system."

"The 2020 presidential election was not stolen," Cheney tweeted on Monday morning. "Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system."

Cheney, the most powerful female GOP lawmaker in the House, has become vocally anti-Trump, a position she cemented after voting to impeach Trump for inciting the deadly January 6 Capitol riot. As a result, many members of her own party, including the ex-president, have launched a campaign against her. Despite surviving a February caucus vote to remove her from leadership, her position in the party is reportedly at risk.

Monday's move isn't a new one from Trump. He's previously successfully redefined certain phrases he views as politically threatening and weaponized them against his opponents. Most notably, he successfully appropriated the term "fake news" - which was originally used to describe false, largely right-wing reports - to refer to any media reports he disliked and as a broad description of the mainstream press.

Trump and his right-wing allies have for months pushed the lie that the 2020 election was "stolen" from Trump and "rigged" by Democrats through widespread illegal voting and other means. And they've been successful in their misinformation campaign. About 55% of GOP voters believe Trump lost the 2020 election because of voter fraud and election rigging, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Kevin McCarthy: GOP Reps ‘Concerned’ about Cheney’s ‘Ability to Carry Out’ Leadership Role

Zachary Evans

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) said some GOP congressmen are “concerned” about Representative Liz Cheney’s (R., Wyo.) ability to fulfill her leadership position, in comments to Fox News on Tuesday.

“There’s no concern about how she voted on impeachment. That decision has been made,” McCarthy said. “I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair to carry out the message.”

As chairwoman of the House GOP conference, Cheney is the third-highest ranking Republican in the House.

“We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority,” McCarthy added. “Remember, majorities are not given. They are earned. And that’s about the message about going forward, combating Joe Biden.”

Cheney was one of ten Republicans in the House who voted to impeach President Trump following the Capitol riot on January 6. Since then, Cheney has continued to criticize the former president and, unlike McCarthy, has refused to label Trump as one of the leaders of the Republican Party.

Cheney has also said that senators who objected to the Electoral College certification after the riots should not run for president.

“If a prerequisite for leading our conference is continuing to lie to our voters, then Liz is not the best fit,” Representative Anthony Gonzalez (R., Ohio) told The Hill on Saturday. Gonzalez also voted to impeach Trump.

“Liz isn’t going to lie to people. Liz is going to say what she believes,” Gonzalez continued. “She’s going to stand on principle. And if that’s going to be distracting for folks, she’s not the best fit. I wish that weren’t the case.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi celebrated the Republican dysfunction in a Wednesday morning statement in which she attributed the push to oust to Cheney to latent sexism within Republican ranks.

Pelosi referenced a Punch Bowl News report that top Republicans are limiting their search for Cheney’s replacement to women who won’t pose a “threat” to their power.

"I've had it with her": McCarthy caught on hot mic trashing Liz Cheney

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Tuesday he's "lost confidence" in Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) during a moment of candor caught on a hot mic, a tape reviewed by Axios shows.

What he's saying: "I think she's got real problems," McCarthy told Steve Doocy off-air ahead of a live "Fox and Friends" interview. "I've had it with ... I've had it with her. You know, I've lost confidence. ... Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place."

  • The comments, made amid seeming cross-talk with Doocy, outlined how the House conference chair could be removed by a vote from the chamber's Republican members.

  • McCarthy's comments contrasted from the nearly 6-minute, on-air interview where he told Doocy he'd heard members concerned about Cheney's ability to carry out her job as a party leader.

  • "This is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan. 6," Cheney spokesperson Jeremy Adler said in response to McCarthy's aired Fox interview. "Liz will not do that. That is the issue."

Why it matters: To date, McCarthy has left some of his more pointed criticisms to his lieutenants, but this firmly puts him on the record — even if it was accidental.

  • Top Republicans told Axios' Jonathan Swan and Alayna Treene last week that Cheney could be removed within a month.

Trump backs Rep. Elise Stefanik, who spread election lies, to replace Liz Cheney in House GOP leadership

  • Donald Trump is backing Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York to chair the House Republican conference.

  • Stefanik, a fierce Trump supporter, is being considered to replace Liz Cheney in GOP leadership.

  • This move comes after Cheney has attacked Trump for spreading lies about the 2020 election.

Former President Donald Trump is backing one of his staunchest House supporters, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, to replace his critic, Rep. Liz Cheney, in GOP leadership, Punchbowl News first reported Wednesday morning.

Stefanik is being considered to chair the House Republican conference, a leadership post that Cheney currently holds.

Stefanik made a name for herself as an aggressive Trump defender during the former president's first impeachment trial, after which Trump called her "a new Republican star." Stefanik also promoted lies about voter fraud and the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election and defended Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot.

Cheney, the third-highest ranking House Republican, was one of just 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump for inciting the Capitol riot and has repeatedly publicly rejected the GOP's lies about the 2020 election results.

Cheney has accused Trump and his allies of "poisoning the Democratic system" by spreading the "big lie" that the 2020 election was "stolen" from Trump and "rigged" by Democrats. And she's said she wouldn't support Trump if he became the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.

The Wyoming Republican survived a February caucus vote to remove her from leadership, but the party is preparing to cast another vote to potentially oust her from her position as soon as next week, according to Punchbowl News.

Trump's endorsement for Stefanik comes after top Republican lawmakers have been openly distancing themselves from Cheney.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise earlier Wednesday pledged his support for Stefanik's bid, per Punchbowl News. "House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting against Speaker Pelosi and President Biden's radical socialist agenda, and Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that," a spokesperson for Scalise said in a statement to Punchbowl News.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday expressed that GOP lawmakers are frustrated with Cheney remaining in the top post. The Republican leader was also caught on a hot mic saying that he's "had it" with Cheney and that she's "got real problems."

This shake-up underscores how the party is clinging to Trump despite him leaving office and does not want to alienate Trump voters in the upcoming midterm elections next year.

With the party against her, Cheney has not been putting in the work to keep her job, which typically involves mustering up the necessary support ahead of a leadership vote, Politico reported on Wednesday. She has continued to publicly oppose Trump and push back on his false election rhetoric.

"The 2020 presidential election was not stolen," Cheney tweeted on Monday. "Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE."

Republican lawmakers have convinced a majority of their base that the 2020 election was fraudulent. Fifty-five percent of GOP voters believe Trump lost the 2020 election because of voter fraud and election rigging, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Liz Cheney: Trump is seeking to 'unravel' democracy — and GOP must confront him

Jon Ward
Jon Ward
·Chief National Correspondent
Wed, May 5, 2021, 6:29 PM

In the midst of an escalating feud over the future of the Republican Party and her position in its leadership, Rep. Liz Cheney on Wednesday laid down a bracing challenge to other members of her party.

“The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution,” Cheney wrote in a Washington Post op-ed in which she doubled down on her determination to confront former President Donald Trump’s continued lies about the 2020 election.

Trump’s campaign of falsehoods led to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, which itself was an attempt to stop the certification of the presidential election.

And yet the former president has continued, with increasing frequency of late, to repeat the baseless lie that the election was somehow stolen.

“Trump repeats these words now with full knowledge that exactly this type of language provoked violence on Jan. 6. And, as the Justice Department and multiple federal judges have suggested, there is good reason to believe that Trump’s language can provoke violence again,” Cheney wrote.

“Trump is seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure that make democracy work — confidence in the result of elections and the rule of law. No other American president has ever done this,” she added.

Cheney said that Republicans should “support the ongoing Justice Department criminal investigations of the Jan. 6 attack,” and also “a parallel bipartisan review by a commission with subpoena power to seek and find facts” about the insurrection.

And she said that “we Republicans need to stand for genuinely conservative principles, and steer away from the dangerous and anti-democratic Trump cult of personality.”

“History is watching. Our children are watching. We must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process. I am committed to doing that, no matter what the short-term political consequences might be,” Cheney wrote.

The op-ed was published Wednesday afternoon, in the middle of a week in which it appeared that the rest of the House GOP leadership would side with Trump over Cheney.

Cheney has forced House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the rest of the House GOP to choose between accepting the reality of the election’s results and bowing the knee to Trump. On Monday, she once again called out Trump for continuing to lie about the 2020 election results, hours after he once again made false claims about them.

“The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system,” Cheney tweeted.

The two House Republicans ahead of Cheney in leadership positions — McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise — have both since indicated they want her out of the No. 3 spot in the House. Trump has attacked Cheney repeatedly in public statements and on Wednesday endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., to replace the Wyoming congresswoman. Scalise also backed Stefanik’s bid to replace Cheney on Wednesday.

In her op-ed, Cheney called out McCarthy by name, quoting what he said on Jan. 13. “The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding,” McCarthy said at the time.

“Now,” Cheney remarked simply in the op-ed, “McCarthy has changed his story.”

House Republicans could vote by secret ballot as soon as next week on whether to strip Cheney of her post as Republican conference chair, under the pretense that the House GOP isn’t able to present a unified message because Cheney is being divisive. Cheney’s break with her colleagues, however, stems from her refusal to accept the lie that the presidential race was stolen.

McCarthy and Scalise, meanwhile, are unsettled by the prospect of being attacked by Trump and his allies. Just this week, McCarthy came under fire from another powerful figure on the right: Fox News personality Tucker Carlson.

But even if Cheney is ousted from her leadership position, political observers back in Wyoming say, she won’t lose her seat in Congress.

“She will be in Congress. There’s no way that these two or three crazies are going to beat her in a primary,” former Wyoming Republican Sen. Alan Simpson told Yahoo News. “She’s going to win. She will. She will beat whoever the hammerheads are that are running against her.”

Two Republicans in the state Legislature have so far said they plan to challenge Cheney in the Republican primary for Congress.

University of Wyoming political science professor James King also told National Public Radio he thinks Cheney will retain her seat. “I don’t see that she’s in a position where she’s going to lose in Wyoming,” King said.

So Cheney will likely remain a political figure and continue to have access to a robust fundraising and political operation. She’s likely to be even more outspoken against Trumpism if she is removed from leadership, and will likely try to move the party more in a post-Trump direction.

And while Scalise and Stefanik have said that Cheney needs to be removed so the GOP has a better shot at winning the House majority in 2022, there is political danger in doubling down on a lie about the election and downplaying the threat to democracy that the Jan. 6 insurrection represented.

“Republicans will look foolish, or worse, to swing voters if they refight 2020 in 2022. They can truthfully say that Democrats used lawsuits to exploit the pandemic to change the election rules in some states. They can also say Democratic judges on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court let Democrats get away with it. Democrats did a better job of exploiting the pandemic election rules than did the GOP,” the conservative Wall Street Journal opinion page said this week.

For Cheney, the battle is over the direction of her party but also of the country and democratic rule.

“We can’t embrace the notion the election is stolen. It’s a poison in the bloodstream of our democracy,” Cheney said Tuesday. “We can’t whitewash what happened on Jan. 6 or perpetuate Trump’s big lie. It is a threat to democracy. What he did on Jan. 6 is a line that cannot be crossed.”
