Mubasher: The Iraqi Council of Ministers decided to form a national committee for population policies, headed by the Minister of Planning.

The Council of Ministers stated in a statement issued today, Thursday, that the decision to form the National Committee for Population Policies comes based on the requirements of the public interest.

The committee will include in its membership representatives of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Ministries of Planning, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Immigration and Displaced Persons, Health and Environment, Youth and Sports.

The council stated that the committee will undertake the following tasks:

Implementing the directives of the Higher Population Council.

Preparing the national document for population policies in Iraq and following up on its implementation.

Submit the follow-up reports prepared by the Executive Management for Population Policies on the implementation of the relevant ministries and other concerned parties for their activities.

Supporting the implementation of population censuses and surveys to obtain accurate information and the most recent data.

Reviewing project documents prepared by the Executive Department for Population Policies, and submitting them to the Higher Population Council for study and approval.

Studying proposals, programs and activities proposed by the executive management of population policies, civil society organizations or specialized international agencies, with the aim of supporting and facilitating the implementation of population policies, and submitting them along with the recommendations of the committee to the Higher Population Council.

- Participating in the meetings of the national councils and national committees for the regional and international population, and attending the Arab and international conferences related to the population fields.

Coordination with national and foreign scientific research centers to enhance their role in achieving the goals of the population policy.

- Supervising the issuance of annual and periodic reports on the status of the population of Iraq and related reports.

The meeting also discussed Family planning and birth spacing strategy 2021-2025.

The Ministry of Planning explained that the task of the National Population Policy Committee, which was formed earlier, is to activate the axes included in the national population policy document that was prepared by the ministry. A spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “This committee is tasked with following up on drawing up the population policy in the long run through what is included in the national document for population policies.” He added that “the Ministry of Planning has previously prepared the national document for population policies, and this document contains a set of long-term basic axes in the field of population policies, including concern for health, education, housing, youth and women issues.” Al-Hindawi continued that “the committee's mission is to activate these axes by translating them into Policies and follow-up issues of the general population census and everything related to population issues.
