Under the contract, Daewoo will build five unloading berths for ships and a container yard, as well as prepare the seabed to receive tankers . The project has faced many complications since its foundation stone was laid in 2008, and the breakwater project was not completed until months ago . "The giant strategic project will provide tens of thousands of job opportunities for young people, " Iraqi Transport Minister Nasser Al-Shibli said in a statement . Various studies indicate the great economic importance of the port of Al-Faw economically for Iraq and the region as well, and it also gained importance due to the ongoing controversy between Iraq and Kuwait, which established the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port on the opposite bank . The General Director of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Farhan Muhaisen Al-Fartousi, said that the project includes the construction of a navigation channel with a length of (14) km, extending to the width of the sea, and the establishment of a dock for ships that will dock at the port, in addition to an underwater tunnel, which is the largest of its kind, where the port will connect Al-Faw Al-Kabeer, Bakhoor Al-Zubayr, and a road linking the sidewalks and the tunnel . He pointed out that "the process of digging the port berth and navigation channel, at a depth of (19.8 m), needs to be lifted (110 million m3) of mud deposits . Stressing that work will start in the coming days, especially since the implementing company has the necessary mechanisms in the port's land to start work . And Iraqi political blocs tried to transfer the contract to be awarded to a Chinese company, and attacked the contract with Daewoo, which was almost canceled at the last minute due to problems related to financing . However, the General Company for Iraqi Ports announced a few days ago that a Chinese company had been excluded from competition and that Daewoo was chosen, after the Iraqi Ministry of Transport accused the Daewoo company of backing away from the port project . yota691
Iraq lays cornerstone for next phase of Grand Port of Al Faw project in Basra The long-awaited project is intended to create a shorter overland transportation corridor by rail, bypassing the Suez Canal /image/policy:1.1201265:1618138859/wo11-APR-Mustafa-Al-Kadhimi.jpg?f=16x9&w=1200&$p$f$w=ad7b827 Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa Al Kadhimi, accompanied by the government delegation, visits the site of the Al Faw Grand Port and the breakwater. Iraqi PMO twitter. Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi inaugurated on Sunday the next phase of an ongoing megaproject to build a new port in the south of the country. The repeatedly delayed Grand Port of Al Faw, which was first announced as a government project in 2010, is one of several projects that Iraq hopes will create a shorter transportation corridor between the Middle East and Europe, bypassing the Suez Canal, through the eventual expansion of a national rail network. “The Grand Port of Al Faw project is not only for Basra. It is a strategic project that contributes to the development and reconstruction of Iraq,” Mr Al Kadhimi said during the opening ceremony in the southern city of Basra. The port will make Iraq “an economic bridge linking it to the world,” he said. . “With action, not words, we are moving together towards a better future that Iraq and our great people deserve,” Mr Al Kadhimi said. In December, Baghdad signed a $2.63 billion contract with South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering and Construction to complete the first phase of the port. A 2018 Iraq-World Bank document on Iraq's reconstruction said the remainder of the port would cost $6bn, in addition to at least $1bn already spent. A breakwater, costing around $1bn, has already been completed and is now the longest breakwater in the world. Daewoo is expected to handle further construction work that includes building five berths to unload ships and a yard for containers. Daewoo will carry out dredging and drilling works to create an access navigation channel. The construction of the next phase of the port is expected to be finished within four years. For the time being, Iraq depends on the port of Umm Qasr in the south of the country, to receive cargo ships, and a smaller port in the city of Basra. Umm Qasr port is at the top of the strategic Gulf waterway near Basra but has limited capacity. The port of Al Faw will be deeper, allowing it to receive the largest container ships. During his visit to Basra Mr Al Kadhimi met with a group of young protesters near the port. "The prime minister listened to their proposals and asserted their right to demonstrate provided that this does not threaten public or private property," a statement by his office said. One of the key demands of the anti-government movement in Basra was the building of the Al Faw Grand Port to provide jobs and trade. It was part of a wider demonstrations that broke out in central and southern Iraq in late 2019.
