Atlanta's mayor signs executive order to "mitigate" impact of Georgia's voting restrictions

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Tuesday issued an administrative order "to mitigate the impact of new voting restrictions imposed" by Georgia's recently enacted law curbing voting access.

Why it matters: Civil rights groups, Democrats and more than 100 businesses and CEOs have condemned the law.

Get market news worthy of your time with Axios Markets. Subscribe for free.

  • The legislation cuts the time period voters have to request absentee ballots and imposes new identification requirements, among other restrictions.

Details: The mayor's order directs Atlanta's chief equity officer to "develop a plan of action within the city's authority to expand opportunity and access to the ballot box."

  • This includes providing training to staff members on voter registration and general information on early, absentee, and in-person voting and disseminating information to residents on how to obtain the forms of identification required for absentee voting.

What she's saying: “The voting restrictions of SB 202 will disproportionately impact Atlanta residents — particularly in communities of color and other minority groups,” said Bottoms said in a statement, referring to the restrictions.

  • “This Administrative Order is designed to do what those in the majority of the state legislature did not — expand access to our right to vote.”

Bottoms told Axios Re:cap on Tuesday that the order is "going to give us the ability to do everything that we possibly can to help people" vote.

  • "We're also going to have to really continue to educate and encourage people to stand in the gap for voters across this state who may not have the ability to cast a vote, meaning we can't go and vote for the president and then wait an additional four years," she added.

  • "We've got to show up each and every time in record numbers because there will be some people who won't have access to their absentee ballots, who won't be able to turn their ballots in on time. We've got to stand in the gap for those folks and make a difference in this state."

So she is saying there are people that are so stupid, they can't vote without help from the Rats. And for sure dead people need the help voting. Can't amend the laws too much or you will prevent out and out fraud, corruption and thief of our next election. The Rats have almost completed their mission of totally destroying this once GREAT Nation and NOTHING will be allowed to stand in their way this time. Time for a second passport!!!

Jen Psaki Destroys Fox News 'Gotcha' Question About Georgia Voting Law

David Moye
·Reporter, HuffPost
Tue, April 6, 2021, 4:16 PM

Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy attempted to get White House press secretary Jen Psaki in a “gotcha” question on Tuesday only to end up humiliated by a pesky little thing called “facts.”

It happened after Doocy brought up Major League Baseball’s decision to move its 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver in response to Georgia’s new restrictive voting law, which limits the use of drop boxes for absentee ballots and imposes ID requirements on those who vote by mail, among other restrictions.

“Is the White House concerned that Major League Baseball is moving their All-Star Game to Colorado, where voting regulations are very similar to Georgia?” Doocy asked.

Doocy was aping a new conservative talking point that the new law in Georgia isn’t that restrictive compared to voting laws in Colorado, since both states require ID to vote, and the Peach State offers 17 days of in-person early voting compared to 15 days in the Centennial State.

“First, let me say, on Colorado. Colorado allows you to register on Election Day, Colorado has voting by mail where they send, to 100% of people in the state who are eligible, applications to vote by mail,” Psaki said, adding that 94% of Colorado citizens voted by mail in the 2020 election.

Colorado also accepts 16 forms of identification, compared to Georgia’s six.

Psaki also made another distinction between Georgia’s new voting law and the existing one in Colorado.

“The Georgia legislation is built on a lie. There was no widespread fraud in the 2020 election, Georgia’s top Republican election officials have acknowledged that repeatedly in interviews,” she said. ”And what there was, however, was record-setting turnout, especially by voters of color. So instead, what we’re seeing here, for politicians who didn’t like the outcome, they’re not changing their policies to win more votes, they’re changing the rules to exclude more voters. And we certainly see the circumstances as different.”

President Joe Biden has criticized the Georgia law and its impact on voters of color, calling it “Jim Crow in the 21st century.”

Psaki ended the question by pointing out that in a free society, “It’s up to Major League Baseball to determine where they’re holding their All-Star Game.”

Doocy didn’t ask a follow-up question.

You can see the exchange below.

As the Republican Georgia legislature does all it can to suppress voters.....the mayor is doing her best to keep citizens informed.  It would be awful for a voter to go through all the legal procedures to vote absentee, only to discover the usual drop box in the neighborhood is no longer available and the only other drop box is clear across the city.....Also, wouldn't want to get arrested for giving an ailing aged voter standing in line for hours a drink of water...People need to be aware of the ludicrous rules.  As always, just my opinion.

Lets get the facts straight.

Water and food can be given out at polling places by the Georgia state election committees.

It can not be given out by partisan groups. It stays in line with the law of "No campaigning near a polling place".

An absentee ballot can be "mailed" from your home and delivered to the post office.

Drop boxes are allowed. They will be authorized by the Georgia Election board and placed by them. No unauthorized boxes will be allowed. I would not want an unauthorized, fraudulant box to be used. Would not want ballot harvesting to take place, where those boxes could be stuffed with illegal votes would we.

Also a mayor is not authorized to change the state legislature rules on election no more than a judge. A pesky thing called the State Constitution and the U.S. Constitution prevent that.

People sworn to uphold both should be upset and voice that concern.

Nothing in her executive order changes anything.....it's simply establishing a strategy to keep voters completely informed so they aren't blindsided by heavy handed voter supressionists.  Nobody wants to go where their regular legal voting drop box has always been located to find out it's been moved across town, four bus changes away.

Correct...."change" the level of information voters may or may not already have....an informed voter is a good voter, don't you think?

Yes an informed voter is a good voter.

Did all these voters get there tv, radios, newspapers turned off or stopped getting delivered?

Did the mail service stop?

Why would they be any less informed because of legislation designed to stop fraud and get an honest election?

No one is being prevented from voting. You need an ID for just about everything today. Voting should be included.

Request a ballot, fill out the ballot, include a form of ID, put in the envelope and mail it out. Easy peasy.

She's just going to make sure the information the voters in her city are getting is accurate and complete, mitigate any guess work that may be unclear to some.

Do you really believe MLB, the largest soft drink company on the planet, and a top 3 airline is not smart enough to understand politics on their own?

Voter ID is not suppression nor will it ever be!!!!   So sick of hearing that BS!

You can’t tell me that the supposed people who are being suppressed NEVER:

Drive, fish, hunt, buy a gun legally, get married, get social security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment benefits, energy assistance, food stamps, welfare, fly in an airplane, take out a library book, rent a car, rent a movie, sign up for any television service, buy alcohol, buy cigarettes, rent a hotel room, go to a doctor/hospital etc, buy a car, apply for a job, apply for credit cards, rent an apartment/sign lease, apply for mortgages or other bank loans, get a safe deposit box, get a post office box,

pick up your mail if you had it stopped.

long enough to prove my point. Five more minutes I can double the list.

no one is being suppressed to do these things. Everyone does it every day without thinking about it. It also tells me the supposed oppressed all have ID anyways.

All an ID being required to vote does is prove you are who you say you are and stop the fraud!!!!!

Go to the DMV and they are free. Not complicated and certainly not suppressing anyone. I haven’t checked but you probably can do it online now days.

3 audits the state of Georgia performed on their 2020 election results.....almost zero evidence of fraud.  The state GOP is attempting to fix something that isn't broke....that can't win elections otherwise, face it.

The very same people who violated their state constitution ran 3 audits useing the same faulty and suspect voting machines got the same faulty results.

Since when is following the law and putting something through the process "ramming".
