Covid Whistle-blower Rebekah Jones is challenging Rep. Matt Gaetz

The scientist who said she was fired by Gov. Ron DeSantis for refusing to censor Florida's Covid-19 numbers said Tuesday she’s hoping to unseat another high-profile Republican politician in the state — Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Rebekah Jones said the congressman, currently under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly paying an underage girl for sex, is vulnerable.

“I hope I do better than a sex trafficker,” Jones told NBC News. “It’s absurd that he’s still in office. Someone like that should not go unchallenged.”

Jones, who currently lives in Maryland, made the announcement on a new Instagram account she set up after her Twitter account was suspended. She said she ran afoul of Twitter for repeatedly reposting a Miami Herald article highly critical of DeSantis.

“I had hoped that someone in the Republican Party would step up and primary him, and I’ve yet to see that happen,” Jones said in the video. “And so, if it takes me going home to Florida to run against Matt Gaetz, then I will do it. If it means getting one child sex trafficker out of office, you’re damn right I’ll do it.”

Gaetz, whose district is in the Florida Panhandle, has denied paying a teenager for sex.

"Congressman Gaetz faces no criminal charges," his spokesman, Harlan Hill, said in an email to NBC News. "Ms. Jones cannot say the same."

Jones was charged in December with hacking into the state's computer system, a charge she denies.

Responsible for helping to create and updating Florida’s Covid-19 dashboard, Jones was fired from the Department of Health in May 2020 for, in her words, refusing to “manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen.”

That was a reference to DeSantis’ plan to reopen Florida even though the pandemic was raging through the state. Most of the nearly 38,000 Covid-19 deaths and 2.3 million confirmed cases in the state were reported after May 2020, according to NBC News figures and other Covid-19 databases.

Shortly after she was ousted, Jones filed a confidential whistle-blower complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations saying she was being punished for speaking out.

DeSantis and other officials denied Jones’ allegations. But in December, Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers, acting on a warrant, raided Jones’ home in Tallahassee, arrested her and confiscated her personal phone and a laptop computer.

Gaetz sex probe suddenly threatens a speedy Washington rise

ALAN FRAM
Sat, April 3, 2021, 10:01 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Compared with most congressional newbies, it didn't take Rep. Matt Gaetz long. Phone calls from the president. Rides aboard Air Force One. Hundreds of television appearances. A darling in conservative circles.

Yet barely four years after arriving in Washington as a little-known Republican state legislator from Florida’s Panhandle, the 38-year-old unblushing defender of Donald Trump is facing a possible abrupt end to his once promising career because of a federal sex-trafficking investigation.

The overwhelming reaction of Gaetz's GOP colleagues — a deafening silence. That reflects the resentments he's sparked during his breakneck rise as one of the party's celebrities and the challenge he faces to retain his seat.

Government agents are investigating if Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old and other underage girls and violated federal sex trafficking laws, people familiar with the probe have told the AP. No charges have been filed, and Gaetz has denied the allegations.

But with new, damaging details emerging regularly, Gaetz's political arc is beginning to resemble the myth of Icarus, who plunged to earth after ignoring warnings that his waxen wings would melt if he flew too close to the sun.

The coming days will test the crisis management skills of one of the most visible members of Congress' younger generation, who critics say care more about promoting their own brand than serious legislating.

“They're here for notoriety and to perform to their base, and anything else that may come is secondary,” said Doug Heye, a Trump critic and former top GOP congressional aide. “And if you boo him that's great too, as long as you're watching.”

David Bossie, president of Citizens United, which backs conservative causes and candidates, countered that Gaetz "has been a conservative warrior, working every day to make America great again and fight for President Trump’s agenda.”

Gaetz's congressional Twitter account is topped with a photo of himself taking a selfie with Trump, apparently on Air Force One. On his personal Twitter account, Gaetz describes himself as “Florida man. Fiancé. Firebrand. America First." He became engaged at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in December.

Gaetz is quick with a quote and looks little older than a college student. And by his own account, he's hardly led a prudish lifestyle while battling for conservative causes.

In his 2020 autobiographical book, “Firebrand,” Gaetz praised Trump as someone “who doesn’t care for puritanical grandstanding or moralistic preening." He added, "If politicians’ family lives aren’t what really matter to the voters, maybe that’s a good thing. I’m a representative, not a monk.”

Chris Latvala, a former GOP colleague in the Florida legislature, suggests that while there, Gaetz went too far. On Friday, Latvala revived a 2020 tweet in which he accused Gaetz of creating a “game where members of the FL House got 'points' for sleeping with aides, interns, lobbyists, and married legislators.”

Latvala wrote Friday, “ I am just sorry that this guy may have victimized others, including possibly minors before others came forward to verify it.”

The game was also described by two other Florida Republicans, who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal what was a private matter. Gaetz has denied knowing about it.

The son of Don Gaetz, a wealthy businessman and one-time Florida state Senate president, Matt Gaetz came to Congress after six years of building his conservative credentials in the state House with pro-gun and other legislation.

Just months after Gaetz arrived in Washington in 2017, when Trump's presidency also began, special counsel Robert Mueller began investigating Russia's influence in Trump's election.

Gaetz sprang into action to defend Trump, filing one resolution asserting investigative wrongdoing aimed at making Mueller resign, and essentially never stopped. His persistence was noted by Trump, who began calling the young lawmaker.

The day before a House hearing on the Russia investigation in 2019, Gaetz tweeted at former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who'd turned on Trump and was about to testify, asking, “Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends?" The House Ethics Committee formally admonished Gaetz for the tweet, which some saw as an attempt at intimidation, and he apologized.

Gaetz was highly visible again months later when the House began its impeachment investigation over Trump's efforts to pressure Ukraine to provide political dirt on Democrat Joe Biden, who would eventually defeat Trump in the election.

Most notably, Gaetz led a cluster of House Republicans who barged past Capitol Police officers into a secure basement meeting room where House Intelligence Committee members were questioning witnesses. They caused a delay of several hours that had little impact on the probe but garnered press attention.

Gaetz was grabbing the spotlight in other ways, too. He brought a white nationalist who questioned the Holocaust as his guest to Trump's 2018 State of the Union address, later claiming ignorance of the man's views.

In March 2020 as the pandemic was taking hold, Gaetz wore a gas mask on the House floor. Critics accused him of downplaying COVID-19, as Trump repeatedly did, but Gaetz asserted he was calling attention to lawmakers' vulnerability to the disease.

All the while, his visibility was growing. Gaetz has made 346 weekday cable news appearances since August 2017, according to Media Matters, a liberal group that monitors conservative media activity.

That makes Gaetz second in Congress only to Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a fellow Trump ally and ubiquitous TV presence.

Through it all, Gaetz has shown no hesitation to criticize fellow Republicans.

In a 2020 tweet, he accused Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., of “screwing all Americans" by dumping stock using insider information as the coronavirus pandemic was starting. The Justice Department investigated Burr but brought no charges.

In Gaetz's book, in a first chapter called “Sex and Money,” he wrote that when he arrived in Congress, he asked current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., for a seat on the Armed Services Committee. Gaetz wrote that “to my shock," McCarthy suggested he contribute $75,000 to the House GOP's campaign committee — a donation Gaetz wrote he actually doubled.

This past January, Gaetz helped spearhead an effort to depose Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from her post as No. 3 House GOP leader after she was among 10 Republicans to vote for Trump's second impeachment.

Gaetz even traveled to a campaign event in Wyoming, where he urged voters to oppose her 2022 reelection and accused her of ignoring “the will of the people.” Days later, Cheney was reelected to her leadership post.

All of that helped alienate him from many Republicans, several GOP lawmakers and aides said.

Among his only defenders this week has been Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who tweeted, “Take it from me rumors and headlines don’t equal truth." Greene has become a pariah even among some Republicans for showing support system" rel="">support for false and violent sentiments.

Having a deep well of support system" rel="">support among colleagues can help a beleaguered lawmakers retain their seat should party leaders begin viewing them as a liability. Ominously, McCarthy has called the charges against Gaetz “serious."

Gaetz has reportedly had inconclusive discussions with Newsmax, a small pro-Trump television outlet, about working for it or another network. A person close to Newsmax said Friday the network has no plans to hire him as a talent.

Matt Gaetz could see charges brought against him by federal prosecutors in July, a report says.

The Florida congressman has been under investigation for months amid a sex trafficking probe involving his former friend Joel Greenberg, according to reports.

Greenberg, a former Seminole County tax collector, pleaded guilty to a string of charges last month and has been cooperating with federal agents looking into Mr Gaetz.

Greenberg pleaded guilty in May to charges of stalking, identity theft, wire fraud, and conspiracy to bribe a public official, as well as a sex trafficking charge.

He is prepared to hand over evidence that could allegedly implicate Mr Gaetz and others, according to ABC News.

Sources told the US news organisation that the investigation into Mr Gaetz has picked up speed with agents interviewing more women who were allegedly introduced to the lawmaker by Greenberg.

Mr Gaetz has not been charged with any crime related to the case.

The pro-Trump politician has strongly denied any claims against him or participating in any illegal behaviour.

And a spokesperson for Mr Gaetz has previously described the investigation as a “partisan smear job.”

A new round of target letters and subpoenas in the wide-ranging investigation have been sent out since May, according to ABC News.

Greenberg will be sentenced by a federal judge on 19 August.

In his guilty plea Greenberg, a married father of two, admitted to spending more than $700,000 in 105 transaction to pay women for sex between 2016 and 2018.

He has acknowledged in court filings that one of those women was under 18 “for part of the time.”

The investigation targeting Mr Gaetz was launched last year when Donald Trump was still president, according to ABC News.

Then-Attorney General Bill Barr was briefed several times on its progress.

Matt Gaetz Is Blowing Piles of Cash on Scandal—and on Roger Stone

With the possibility of sex trafficking charges still hanging over him, Rep. Matt Gaetz’s latest campaign finance report shows a spate of new legal spending, a massive public relations blitz, and continued payments to one conspicuous MAGA icon: Roger Stone.

Nearly half the embattled congressman’s $1.95 million in expenses—a little over $825,000—went to public affairs firm Logan Circle Group, which has handled Gaetz’s media strategy since The New York Times first reported in March that he was the focus of an investigation over federal sex crimes. Some of the payments were for “strategic campaign consulting,” while others were for “advertising.”

But perhaps the most notable strategist Gaetz paid is one who had contact with Gaetz wingman Joel Greenberg as the former Seminole County tax collector sought a presidential pardon.

Roger Stone—the longtime Trump operator who received a pardon himself for charges that he lied to Congress, obstructed justice, and attempted witness tampering—received $15,000 in three installments for “strategic campaign consulting.” Two of the payments, which went to Stone’s business Drake Ventures, came after the Justice Department sued Stone and his company for $2 million in unpaid taxes.

New Docs Show Matt Gaetz Campaign in Full Damage-Control Mode

A few days before The New York Times broke news of the investigation into Gaetz, the Florida congressman paid Stone $5,000 for “strategic consulting.” And according to the new filing, Gaetz paid Stone another $5,000 three days after the news broke. The report discloses a second fee in late April after a series of reports about Gaetz’s connections to people involved in the alleged sex ring, including Venmo payments to his former wingman-turned-convicted sex trafficker.

The third payment to Stone, on May 26, came on the heels of Greenberg’s cooperation deal.

The Daily Beast reported in April that Greenberg had enlisted Stone sometime last fall to help secure a pardon from then-President Donald Trump. According to a series of text messages between the two men, Greenberg repeatedly told Stone that Gaetz was directly implicated in the same sex crimes he had been charged with earlier that year.

Matt Gaetz’s Wingman Paid Dozens of Young Women—and a 17-Year-Old

A Gaetz spokesperson from Logan Circle claimed that the firm’s payday was the result of the barrage of media reports on the congressman’s alleged role in the sex ring.

“Four months into a fake scandal cooked up by a corporate media who should be—and will be—apologizing for their conduct towards Rep. Gaetz, they are now ‘reporting’ on financial expenses incurred as a result of their own smear campaigns,” the spokesperson said. “If we were them, we’d be worried about our own financial liabilities having repeatedly libelled and lied.”

The spokesperson requested that the statement “run in full or not at all,” or The Daily Beast would “get no further participation from us.”

Jordan Libowitz, communications director for government watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, told The Daily Beast the Logan Circle expenses “raise more questions” about the Gaetz media strategy.

“Gaetz’s filings are highly unusual and difficult to understand to begin with. They tend to obscure campaign expenses,” Libowitz said. “And while it’s understandable that a congressman wrapped up in a major scandal would want to hire a crisis management team, that alone doesn’t explain paying a firm with two or three employees nearly a million dollars in one month.”

Gaetz, who has reportedly been under federal investigation since last summer, also racked up $50,000 in legal bills in his latest filing. The payments were split evenly between two separate firms, and both came in June—the month after Greenberg signed his cooperation agreement.

One of the firms, Marc Fernich Law Offices, has represented a slate of notorious clients, including Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the recently convicted head of the NXIVM sex cult, Keith Raniere.

That total comes out to more than five times the campaign’s combined legal expenses between 2017 and July 2020, the month after Greenberg was first indicted, when Gaetz’s legal fees first began to escalate.

Bombshell Letter: Gaetz Paid for Sex With Minor, Wingman Says

The filing also shows Gaetz trying to raise—and raising—stunning amounts of money. His campaign shelled out about $220,000 for fundraising consulting since April, and more than $250,000 for direct mail buys and postage. That spending paid off, however, with Gaetz bringing in $1.44 million this quarter.

Still, Gaetz spent more than he brought in during a typically sleepy time for campaign expenditures. In total, Gaetz burned through $1.95 million between April 1 and June 30.

Part of that spending stems from Gaetz handing over $99,445 to Red Rocks Strategies, a firm Gaetz has frequently tapped in the past. And Gaetz spent another $120,000 with the consulting firm Trishul LLC.

Trishul LLC does not appear in any other finance reports from any political committee—ever. The firm’s address on the filing is a one-bedroom D.C. condo belonging to Kash Patel, a former Pentagon official and aide to Gaetz ally Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA). Patel reportedly played a key role in Trump’s attempts to undermine the Russia investigation, and repeatedly tried to get intelligence agencies to release secrets that, Patel believed, would show Trump was a victim of “the deep state.”

Patel declined a request for comment.

Gaetz also hired—at least temporarily—the former producer of Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast. The filing discloses a single $650 “payroll” expense to operative Viswanag Burra, on May 28, one week after Gaetz stumped for donations on Bannon’s show. (Burra lists his occupation on LinkedIn as “Special Ops at Congressman Matt Gaetz.”)

Among the other notable expenditures in the filing were two meals adding up to $785.70—as well as another $15 for parking—at the Trump International Hotel in D.C.

Gaetz, who embarked on a combo fundraising-standup tour this spring with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, also reported record-high travel costs. The campaign spent $7,479 on airfares, $1,968 on Uber rides and rental cars, and $2,762 on lodging. On May 18, Gaetz transferred $150,000 of his own campaign money to the joint fundraising committee he and Greene established for their barnstorm. Gaetz didn’t file as a committee participant until three days later.

The report also shows that many Gaetz donors appear to want their money back. Over the last three months, the campaign returned more than $46,500 worth of contributions, according to the filing. By contrast, Gaetz refunded a total $64,280 over the course of the full 2020 election cycle, according to FEC records.

Rep. Matt Gaetz cut off a reporter's question about his vaccination status and said, 'We should be talking more about freeing Britney'

  • Rep. Matt Gaetz refused to disclose his vaccination status. He focused instead on Britney Spears.

  • "I think we should be talking more about freeing Britney," he told CNN.

  • Gaetz also called CNN's question about his vaccination status "very nosy."

  • See more stories on Insider's business page.

When asked about his COVID-19 vaccination status, Rep. Matt Gaetz declined to answer and instead turned his attention to singer Britney Spears' conservatorship.

"I think we should be talking more about freeing Britney," the Florida Republican told CNN this week, a report published on Thursday said.

Gaetz didn't let the CNN reporter finish their question about whether he has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. Instead he replied, "That's very nosy of you."

The lawmaker is one of 97 Republicans who have refused to disclose their vaccination status, with many arguing that it's a personal matter, CNN reported.

"I don't think it's anybody's damn business whether I'm vaccinated or not," Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas told CNN.

Democrats have slammed GOP lawmakers who have not revealed if they've gotten the vaccine. Critics view the move as irresponsible, claiming that Congress has a responsibility to boost public confidence in the vaccine as misinformation runs rampant. All Democrats in the House and Senate are fully vaccinated, per CNN.

Many congressional Republicans have also added to the hesitancy and skepticism surrounding the vaccine by spreading misinformation themselves. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, for example, was suspended from Twitter for 12 hours on Monday evening after she posted claims about COVID-19 and the vaccine that the platform called "misleading."

Recently, however, some Republicans have begun urging Americans to get the shot as the delta variant causes a spike in coronavirus infections among unvaccinated people in the US.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN last week that he is "a big fan of vaccinations" and that "it is pretty clear from all the evidence that if you get the disease, you are much more likely to survive it if you get vaccinated."

Gaetz does not appear to be interested in the vaccination push coming from his colleagues. The lawmaker showed up to a "Free Britney" rally last week outside a Los Angeles courthouse ahead of the singer's conservatorship hearing.

Spears, 39, has been legally under a conservatorship for 13 years, which has placed her fortune in her father's control.

"Britney has been abused by the media, she has been abused by her grifter father and she's been abused by the American justice system," Gaetz told the crowd of Spears' supporters last Wednesday.

In March, Gaetz called for Congress to hold a hearing on court-mandated conservatorships, citing the "Free Britney" movement.

Earlier this month, he also wrote a letter to Spears, inviting her to testify before Congress about her conservatorship battle and how she's been stripped of her "life, liberty, and happiness."

Gaetz is also the subject of an ongoing Department of Justice investigation into whether he paid underage girls for sex.

And you say this because... you follow the misinformation media. It's strange that the unvaccinated numbers are much higher,  healthier tells you that smart people think for themselves,  and  the vaccinated allow themselves too be brainwashed and coerced into fear.

Are you still stuck on the lies the socialist party keeps pushing.
