Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi approved today, Sunday, the formation of a committee to develop the ancient city of Ur.

A statement by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers received by Alsumaria News said, "The Council of Ministers decided, based on the approval of the President of the Council, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, to form a committee under the supervision of the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, to undertake the elaboration of ideas and plans for the project to develop the archaeological city of Ur, and prepare the lists and costs necessary for its completion, Provided that the committee submits a detailed semi-monthly report to the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers. The General Secretariat stated in a statement that Al-Furat News received a copy of it, “The Council of Ministers decided, based on the approval of the President of the Council, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, to form a committee under the supervision of the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, to undertake the elaboration of ideas and plans for the project of developing the archaeological city of Ur, and preparing statements and costs. Required for its completion, provided that the committee submits a detailed semi-monthly report to the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers.

The statement continued, "The decision included assigning the presidency of the committee to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, and its membership includes representatives from the Prime Minister's office, Dhi Qar Governorate, the ministries of interior, construction, housing, public works and municipalities, culture and finance, as well as the municipal and service departments in the governorate. It is noteworthy that "the government's decision to develop the ancient city of Ur comes after the historic visit made by Pope of the Vatican Francis I to Iraq at the beginning of this month {5-8 March}. His visit included the ancient city of Ur in the province of Dhi Qar, where the ruins of the House of the Prophet of God Abraham include Al Khalil {PBUH. } A unified prayer was performed in it in the presence of representatives of different religions and civil society organizations.

After his speech in the ancient city, the Pope performed a unified prayer with representatives of different religions in Ur, including Muslims, Sabeans and Christians.

Been there - very interesting site.

 

At Abrahams house  site, only the walls have been rebuilt. Not sure as to their accuracy - doubt the plans are still around.

The Brits were there back in the 20-30's , I believe, for archeology digs. You can look down into shafts they dug and see old fireplaces and pottery. We all thought UR looked a lot like Mayan structures. It's pretty complete except for the structure on top supposedly holding the golden harp.

Used to be a very lush area until the Euphrates river changed course. The population moved with the river - had to.
