Veep Kamala Harris takes foreign calls on behalf of Biden

February 16, 2021 | 6:56pm |

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday held her second call with a foreign leader — speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron after a talk earlier this month with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as with World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in January.

The calls boost the vice president’s role in diplomacy. Former Vice President Mike Pence occasionally spoke directly by phone with foreign leaders, but that role generally was performed by former President Donald Trump, especially last year.

A review of press notices from Pence’s final year in office reveals no readouts of direct calls with the leaders of foreign nations.

Harris expressed to Macron “her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the United States and France and to revitalizing the transatlantic alliance,” according to a readout from her office.

Harris and Macron “agreed on the need for close bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address COVID-19, climate change, and support democracy at home and around the world,” according to the readout.

“They also discussed numerous regional challenges, including those in the Middle East and Africa, and the need to confront them together. The Vice President thanked President Macron for his leadership on the issue of gender equality and for France’s contribution to NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover,” the release said.

Harris, who attended high school in Montreal, spoke with Trudeau on Feb. 1 about “the United States’ desire to work closely with Canada on a wide range of issues, including combating the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing climate change, and expanding our economic partnership in ways that advance the recovery and create jobs,” her office said.

President Biden spoke with Trudeau on Jan. 22 in his first call as president with a foreign nation’s leader. He spoke with Macron on Jan. 24.

Biden has also spoken with the leaders of the UK, Germany, Russia, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia and India.

Although Pence seldom spoke with world leaders toward the end of his term, he did so occasionally in earlier years and sometimes met with foreign leaders on trips abroad.

Pence spoke on the phone with Trudeau in 2019 and with the presidents of Argentina and Australia in 2017. He spoke in 2018 and 2019 with Colombia’s president. He spoke in 2018 with Iraq’s prime minister and in 2019 with Ukraine’s president.

VP Kamala Harris holds calls with foreign leaders without Biden

Conservatives have repeated concerns about Biden’s ability to carry out his four years in office as the oldest president ever elected at the age of 78

Vice President Kamala Harris is proving that she will play an important role in the White House as she hosts calls with foreign leaders without President Biden.

A readout from the White House published on Monday showed that Harris took a call with French President Emannuel Macron, where she "expressed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties."

"Vice President Harris and President Macron agreed on the need for close bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address COVID-19, climate change, and support democracy at home and around the world," the statement read. "They also discussed numerous regional challenges, including those in the Middle East and Africa, and the need to confront them together."

The president himself did put a call into Macron last month, on Jan. 24.

Though Biden knows many of the world leaders he will be dealing with from his tenure as vice president in the Obama administration, he likely has not dealt extensively with Macron since he was elected in 2017.

A spokesperson for the White House did not return Fox News’ request for comment.

As noted by the Council on Foreign Relations, the vice president’s role in foreign policy has grown since the mid-20th century. **** Cheney is credited for shaping President George W. Bush’s foreign policy priorities and Biden managed relations under President Barack Obama with several key countries.

However, conservatives have repeated concerns about Biden’s ability to carry out his four years in office as the oldest president ever elected at the age of 78.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates questioned in 2019 whether older individuals, such as Biden, have the mental acuity or energy necessary for a president.

Concerns about Biden aside, it has long been expected that Harris will play a central role in the administration.

Biden has also come under scrutiny for not reaching out to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki assured reporters that a call would take place "soon" – though she admitted that she could not pinpoint an exact date.

Psaki said Netanyahu would be the first leader in the region to receive a call from Biden, and reaffirmed that Israel is an "important ally" to the U.S.

Biden called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador the week he was inaugurated.

Harris also held a standalone call with Trudeau shortly after Biden.

Are you sure you want to go there?  "There were no vaccines when we took office".  Referring to China and the Uighurs - "Culturally there are different norms." - Joe Biden

Sure....I remember the no vaccines part...he said "in the fridge" metaphorically speaking, talking about vaccine stock piles that didn't exist.

Just a different Administrative style than "the former guy"....a good leader trusts the people around him/her, designates authority when needed.....the military taught me that.
