Dangerously Cold Temperatures Pour Into Europe This Week

While the Arctic blast over the central US is set to worsen in the coming days (see: here & here), temperatures in northern Europe are set to dive as low as -20 degrees Celsius (-36 degrees Fahrenheit), data firm Maxar Technologies said in a report on Wednesday.

The pattern of exceptionally frigid air blasting parts of the US and Europe at the moment is due to a disruption of the polar vortex, which has allowed Arctic air to spill south into North America and Europe.

Maxar said European heating degree days (HDD) between Feb. 10-14 would register around 102, which is well above the ten-year average of 82.1. HDD is a measurement designed to quantify the demand for energy needed to heat a building.

The Arctic sea ice year in review

In a recent study, Handcock and Raphael (2020) note that in the Antarctic, much of the departure from average extent depends on the timing of the ice loss. For example, when extent is dropping substantially each day, a few days difference in the timing of the beginning and end of ice loss and gain can result in relatively large departure in ice extent from average. The causes of earlier or later onsets of ice loss—weather or ocean forcings on the cyclical annual trend—have long-running effects if they adjust the phase of the cycle.

After an extended period of below-average ice extent since the second half of 2016, Antarctic sea ice expanded to above-average levels in August of 2020 and remained high until the last week of this month. Once again, the Maud Rise polynya was open, but only briefly in late November and early December, as sea ice retreat in the Weddell proceeded and the ice edge swept past the polynya.

ANTARCTICA SUFFERING COLDEST JANUARY SINCE 1978 + GLOBAL SEA ICE GROWING EXPONENTIALLY

The start of 2021 in Antarctica has been an unusually chilly one. In fact, the first half of January has been the coldest since 1978, according to data compiled by @LpdlcRamirez and @peikko763 on Twitter.

As of Jan. 19, the month-to-date temperature anomaly across Antarctic is approx. -0.5C, making this the continents coldest first 3-or-so-weeks of Jan. since 1978 (solar minimum of cycle 20), according to research conducted by @peikko163 on Twitter, who also notes that the Southern Hemisphere as a whole is suffering anomalous January chills not seen since 2012.

Mercury plunges to minus 22.9C on coldest UK night in more than 25 years

Temperatures plunged to below minus 22C overnight, the lowest in the UK in more than two decades, following an “extreme freeze”.

The mercury dropped to minus 22.9C (minus 9.2F) in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, the coldest temperature recorded in the UK since 1995, the Met Office said.

Forecasters said the last time a temperature below minus 20C was recorded in the UK was December 23 2010.

Paris gripped by unusual snowfall, extreme cold, flooded Seine

I hope your warm Unbertino:

Paris woke up on Wednesday morning to snow covered streets, while the Seine river that runs through the heart of the city burst its banks in some areas as extreme wintry weather affecting much of northwestern Europe continued.

Between two and 10 centimeters of snow fell on the Ile-de-France region that is home to the French capital, adding to already icy conditions on roads.

Public transport and school bus services in the capital were heavily disrupted on Wednesday.

Heavy rains across the north of the country in recent days have also seen the Seine rise 4.5 meters over normal levels, flooding some riverbanks in Paris.

The extreme cold is expected to continue on Thursday, with lows of -15C being forecast.

Thank you bigwave for bring the truth.  I wish more people could see this- Instead we get the new green deal as the top of FAKE administration priorities.  So lame. And WHY do they listen to a middle school kid and not the "science" as the left loves to sey "We believe in science" oh do you really??? Sounds like you believe more in what a middle school kids thinks.  LAME stream media feeds us what they want for us to know, and not the truth.  I've had to find my own sources of news, and DV is one of them.  Telegraph is good, so is Rumble and Parlar is supposed to be back today!  Thanks again.

Largest Oil Refinery In America Shuts Down Because Of Global Warming Cold…

More than 3 million barrels of daily oil-processing capacity has been idled in the wake of record-setting cold, according to consultant Energy Aspects Ltd. The shutdowns portend tightening supplies and higher prices for everything from gasoline to propane in coming days and weeks in cities across the country that rely on the U.S. Gulf Coast for fuels.
