The embassy stated in a press release, "The United States has allocated nearly $ 20 million to support the Iraqi government in securing the international zone, and this support includes funding a team of civil engineers to conduct a comprehensive survey of the current entry points to the international zone, and to develop plans for new gates." The US Department of Defense said in a statement to the People, (January 23, 2021) that Austin "discussed the importance of shared values and the status quo, including maintaining a strong defense and containment position for NATO, and continuing missions in Afghanistan and Iraq." The Pentagon confirmed that this was the minister's first phone call after assuming his duties. On Friday, the US Congress approved the appointment of General Lloyd Austin as defense minister in President Joe Biden's new administration. The Senate approved the nomination of Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense. With his appointment as Defense Secretary, he would become the first African American to head the Department of Defense.
