(Baghdad: Al Furat News) The US embassy in Baghdad announced today, Saturday, the allocation of 20 million dollars to secure the "international zone" known as the Green Zone.

The embassy stated in a press release, "The United States has allocated nearly $ 20 million to support the Iraqi government in securing the international zone, and this support includes funding a team of civil engineers to conduct a comprehensive survey of the current entry points to the international zone, and to develop plans for new gates."

She added, "Brigadier General John Taykert, chief defense affairs officer at the United States Embassy, today presented the final report from the survey team to Major General Hamid Mahdi Al-Zuhairi, commander of the Iraqi Special Division responsible for the security of the international zone."

The embassy added, "This handover represents an important achievement to confirm the currently ongoing cooperative project to enhance the security of the international zone of Baghdad and secure the headquarters of the Iraqi government."

New US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin
 
 
Baghdad (NAS) - The  new US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed, on Saturday, with the Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the most important issues related to Afghanistan and Iraq.  
 
The US Department of Defense said in a statement to the People, (January 23, 2021) that Austin "discussed the importance of shared values and the status quo, including maintaining a strong defense and containment position for NATO, and continuing missions in Afghanistan and Iraq."  
 
The Pentagon confirmed that this was the minister's first phone call after assuming his duties.  
 
On Friday, the US Congress approved the appointment of General Lloyd Austin as defense minister in President Joe Biden's new administration.  
 
The Senate approved the nomination of Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense.    
 
With his appointment as Defense Secretary, he would become the first African American to head the Department of Defense.    
 
Austin is 67 years old and a general, has served in several countries, and was retired in 2016.
