US already in Iran deal talks, officials met in New York - report

"We'll know pretty soon if the efforts [in returning to the deal] have been successful," the source told Le Figaro.

Talks of the US returning to the 2015 Iran deal have reportedly been underway in New York for about three weeks, between figures from Biden's administration and Iranian actors, according to a source close to the matter speaking to French newspaper Le Figaro, as reported by Maariv, the sister publication of The Jerusalem Post.

Important European players — including France, Britain, and Germany — apparently were not aware of the talks.

"We'll know pretty soon if the efforts [in returning to the deal] have been successful," the source told Le Figaro.

The Trump administration left the deal in 2018, but Biden has been clear about his desire to return to the agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of action. It was signed by Iran and the six world powers; the US, Russian, China, France, Germany and Great Britain.

Should the US re-enter the deal, the source explained, few sanctions placed on Iran might be removed, including the ban on selling oil.

Similar media reports have surfaced about possible talks between representatives of the Biden administration and Israeli officials, prior to the Wednesday inauguration of US President Joe Biden. Israel has rejected those reports. Such pre-election communication would be illegal under US law.

But both incoming US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki have been clear about Biden's desire to engage with Israeli and representatives of other countries prior to making any decisions.

The United States seeks to lengthen and strengthen the nuclear constraints on Iran through diplomacy and the issue will be part of President Joe Biden's early talks with foreign counterparts and allies, Psaki said on Wednesday.

Biden has said that if Tehran resumed strict compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement — under which Iran restrained its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions — Washington would too.

"The president has made clear that he believes that through follow-on diplomacy, the United States seeks to lengthen and strengthen nuclear constraints on Iran and address other issues of concern. Iran must resume compliance with significant nuclear constraints under the deal in order for that to proceed," Psaki said in a briefing.

"We would expect that some of his earlier conversations with foreign counterparts and foreign leaders will be with partners and allies and you would certainly anticipate that this would be part of the discussions," Psaki added.

On Tuesday, Blinken said Washington did not face a quick decision on whether to rejoin the nuclear deal and the Democratic president would need to see what Iran actually did to resume complying with the pact.

Iran in return has gradually breached key limits on its nuclear activity set in the deal, building up its stockpile of low enriched uranium, enriching uranium to higher levels of purity and installing centrifuges in ways barred by the deal.

Iran called for action and "not just words" shortly after Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh tweeted.

The DIPLOMATIC VANDALISM of Trump, Pompeo & co stemmed partly from a broken institutional process. But that same process-when "functional"-produced disasters like wars in Iraq, Afghanistan & Vietnam.

No surprise!  Obama was beholden to Iran.  Now with his third term in office it will escalate.  Remember John Kerry told Iran this time last year that they only needed to hold on and things would go back to normal.  How sad!

You think it's Obummer? We know Biden, this senial old man can't think for himself, you know Salute Marines...repeat "Salute Marines" geez.  My feeling is that it's Condoleezza Rice.

Matthew Toller: The diplomatic solution needs great efforts (Anatolia)

The US ambassador to Iraq,  Matthew Toller, confirmed today, Sunday, that his country is seeking to resolve its differences with Tehran through diplomatic means, in the first statement to the embassy after the new US President Joe Biden assumed his duties on the twentieth of this month.

The American ambassador, during a meeting with the Iraqi National Security Adviser, Qassem Al-Araji, in Baghdad, stated that his country's differences with Iran still exist.

He pointed out that Washington seeks to resolve these differences through diplomatic means, indicating that the diplomatic solution needs great efforts.

According to a statement by the Office of the Iraqi National Security Adviser, Tueller confirmed his country's continued support for Iraq in the face of terrorism within the framework of the international coalition.

The statement quoted Al-Araji as indicating that "Iraq looks forward to continuing support for the international coalition in the field of combating terrorism and exchanging information on terrorists, until the elimination of the remaining terrorist cells."

A senior Iraqi diplomat confirmed to "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that resolving differences between the United States and Iran is subject to the desire of both parties, indicating that the reduction of tension between Washington and Tehran will clearly and directly affect the situation in Iraq.

The diplomat pointed out that the Iraqi authorities, "who have confirmed, on more than one occasion, non-alignment with any party at the expense of the other, wish at the same time to end regional and international conflicts that harm one way or another."

For his part, former Iraqi parliament member Majed Shankali explained that the return of the United States of America to the nuclear agreement with Iran is not an easy matter, saying in a tweet on "Twitter" that "America's return to the 5 + 1 nuclear agreement will not be as flexible and smooth as some portray us. Rather, there will be many complications, foremost among which are ballistic missiles and Iranian destabilizing interventions in the region, in addition to taking into account the interests of America's allies in the region, especially Israel. "

Despite the Iraqi government's keenness to maintain neutrality, and to adopt dialogue on the foreign presence in the country, politicians, forces and militias close to Iran are calling for an expedited removal of foreign forces, especially the American, from Iraq, in implementation of a previous decision by the House of Representatives in this regard.

At the beginning of last year, the Iraqi parliament voted in an exceptional session boycotted by the Kurdish blocs, the majority of the Sunni Arab forces, the Turkmen and Christian blocs and representatives, and other independent representatives, on a decision obligating the government to expel foreign forces from the country, following the assassination of the Iranian "Quds Force" commander, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the “The Popular Mobilization Forces” Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, in an American air strike near Baghdad International Airport.

Dr.. Fatih Abdul Salam

Iran is in a position of fear and prejudice to the American threat to negotiate new foundations as a condition for returning to the nuclear agreement and accepting the removal of sanctions, because it knows that restoring the Iranian situation before the American withdrawal during the Trump era from the 2015 agreement is no longer possible through the same data in political deliberation, It must take steps to cut the American line of escalation against it.

This leads to the question, what does Iran possess from elements of power, while it is subject to severe American sanctions, in order to ask the new US administration to return to the nuclear agreement after the immediate lifting of the sanctions and without   being ready to make any concessions?

Iran is still convinced that the US grip   cannot go to the maximum level of suffocation due to the regional escalation card that Tehran can easily raise on both sides of the Gulf, which will negatively affect the situation of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, where the strategic corridor for the crossing of oil. Here, Iran is not entering into a direct military confrontation, but it will have in its grasp direct friction through small operations, through which it may not appear in the picture, but it will have an impact on oil prices.

On the other hand, Iran will go to use the weapon of regional supremacy and its missile parades through the recent maneuvers at sea, thinking that it can make pressure on the United States' allies in the region to push them to a choice that indirectly benefits Tehran, through their request from the administration The US government is not to go to major military options that Iran might exploit to harm the allied countries with arguments related to the American presence in the region.

Tehran's second card is the electoral contest in Iraq that is scheduled to take place next October, in which Iran seeks through its arms to completely exclude the pro-Washington camp from the Iraqi political arena, so that any   future American move in this country seems difficult and clashes with the administration of the parliament that it will control. Iranian fist, and to make decisions in the name of the Iraqi people.

The renewed Israeli entry into the crisis line, by reminding President Joe Biden on the day of the inauguration that the Iranian threat exists and must be   addressed, will push the White House to adhere to the option of a new formulation of the nuclear agreement.

Iran wants it share of OPEC, seems lifting sanctions throws more oil on the market. That in turn makes OPEC cringe since they are in reduction mode, to lift the PB to $55 to $60. Or shutting down the Keystone pipeline will offset production in which could be given to Iran...Ole Joe getting ready to hammer folks in the USA at the pump for Iran...

As UAE signs a deal with Trump an hour before Biden’s swearing-in, the Arab World’s message to the world is clear
 by Abhyoday Sisodia
 January 21, 2021

Reading Time: 3min read

UAE, Trump, Biden

The Trump Administration was the arbitrator for the historic Abraham Accords, which in turn concretised the USA’s MENA (the Middle East & North Africa) alliance, making the overall structure a dominant and cohesive single unit, rather than the divide alliance of antagonistic countries, as the previous administrations had left for Trump. And now by signing the weapons deal with the UAE in the final hours of his time as the President, he has empowered his Gulf allies to an extent that no-one could jeopardize the peace in the region.

The United Arab Emirates has signed an agreement with the United States to purchase 50 F-35 jets, people familiar with the situation told Reuters on Wednesday. This comes after the Trump Administration had notified Congress in November 2020, that it is planning to sell 50 fighter F-35 jets as part of a broader $23 billion deal with United Arab Emirates (UAE). The development took place just after the Abraham Accords were signed among Bahrain-UAE-Israel which made UAE an ally of Israel, thus removing any possible reservation to the UAE gaining this superior weaponry.

With the implementation of what he had promised in the last moments, the Trump administration has made UAE militarily dominant and has succeeded in creating a powerful Middle Eastern alliance of countries capable of containing and countering any threat to the peace and prosperity in the region, even if it is Iran. The decision comes at a time that makes it all the more interesting to observe. As Trump is leaving office, this military sale has bound Joe Biden to continue with the Trumpian foreign policy at least in the Middle East.

Mike Pompeo had said back in November, “This is in recognition of our deepening relationship and the UAE’s need for advanced defense capabilities to deter and defend itself against heightened threats from Iran.” While the recent move of Trump will make the Iranian misadventures more and more costly, it will also tighten the hands of Joe Biden from cuddling up with the Iranian authoritarian regime as he did under the Obama administration. This surely gives the US allies a greater say into how the US administration will be going ahead deal with Iran and will provide a much-needed safety net in case Biden tries to leave its allies in the doldrums.

The Reuters report said the agreement was signed about an hour before Biden was sworn into office. The document gave the United Arab Emirates a chance to accept the negotiated schedule and configuration of the jets as well as making the purchase request as official as it can be. The UAE government also signed a separate agreement to buy up to 18 drones, making it the second-largest sale of U.S. drones to a single country.

The final in-country delivery date for the F-35 jets could not be confirmed immediately, but the initial proposal sent to UAE said it would be 2027, as per the Reuters report.
