Dozens were killed and wounded in a double suicide attack in the center of the capital (Getty)
Ultra Iraq - Editorial Team

Days after the announcement of the opening of the ancient streets, whose name was linked to a previous massacre, two explosions reverberated in the center of the capital, Baghdad, leaving dozens dead and wounded, in a first incident about 3 years ago.

At least 28 people were killed in the twin suicide attack in the center of the capital

The scenes and images showed the first moments of the attack, which was carried out by two suicide bombers with explosive belts targeting sellers and civilians in the military clothing market in Tayaran Square in the center of the capital, on the morning of Thursday, January 21.

A police officer told "Ultra Iraq", "One of the suicide bombers detonated his explosive belt in the middle of Tayaran Square, and then the other detonated himself near the premises selling used clothes on the opposite side."

And the officer, who requested anonymity, stated that "the two explosions resulted in dozens of dead and wounded."

The security forces cordoned off the site of the accident, as pictures that could not be published showed evacuations of the victims, who were strewn about the carts selling clothes and the vegetable market.

The death toll from the attack reached 28 dead and dozens of wounded, according to an infinite statistic announced by the Joint Operations Command.

Meanwhile, Major General Yahya Rasul, a spokesman for the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, said in a statement that “the security forces chased the perpetrators of the attack,” before they set out to detonate their belts among civilians.

In turn, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Saif Al-Badr, said, "Hospitals in the capital have entered a state of alert to receive the wounded in the suicide bombings."

Baghdad - (AFP) - At least 28 people were killed and 73 wounded in two suicide bombings Thursday in central Baghdad, according to what the Iraqi authorities announced, in an attack that has not witnessed the strength of the Iraqi capital for more than 18 months.

The attack took place in the bale market in Tayaran Square, which is often crowded with pedestrians, which three years ago witnessed a suicide bombing that killed 31 people.

As in 2018, the assault comes at a time when the authorities are discussing the organization of legislative elections, a entitlement often accompanied by violence in Iraq.

"There was a double terrorist attack by two suicide bombers who detonated themselves when the security forces pursued them in the Bab al-Sharqi district in Baghdad on Thursday morning," said the media spokesperson for the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief, Yahya Rasoul.

The Interior Ministry stated that the two explosions killed at least 20 people and injured 40 people.

The ministry stated that a man detonated his explosive belt among vendors and passers-by in the market. As a number of people were gathering, another suicide bomber blew himself up.

The explosion was heard all over the capital. Journalists at the Agence France-Presse reported that a number of ambulances had arrived, while soldiers were deployed in the square heavily, and a number of them were assisting ambulance teams.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. ISIS, which for years controlled large parts of Iraq, used this method in several areas. The Iraqi forces succeeded in eliminating the organization at the end of 2017 after bloody battles. But cells from it are still active in some areas far from cities. They target from time to time military sites in those areas.

The recent attacks that caused a large number of deaths in Baghdad date back to June 2019.

- US elections and withdrawal -

The political authorities are currently proposing to postpone early elections scheduled for June to October in order to allow time for the electoral commission to organize them. The decision remains pending a vote in Parliament to dissolve itself.

Also, the attack comes at a time when the United States began reducing the number of its soldiers in Iraq to 2,500 soldiers. US Defense Secretary Christopher Miller attributed the decision to withdraw as "the increasing capabilities of the Iraqi army."

He said that this reduction "does not mean a change in the policy of the United States," noting that "the United States and the coalition forces remain in Iraq to confirm a permanent defeat" of the Islamic State.

But this withdrawal also came in light of the escalation of tension in Iraq between Shiite groups loyal to Iran and Washington since the assassination of the head of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, last year in an American air strike at Baghdad airport.

And American interests came under attack. While the Iraqi parliament called for the withdrawal of American soldiers.

The United States has led an international coalition since 2014 in Iraq to combat ISIS.

Most of the forces participating in the coalition from other countries left the country at the beginning of the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020.

While a security source reported that 35 people were killed and more than 100 wounded, police sources suggested that the death toll would increase in the attack that hit the crowded market, because some of the injured were in critical condition.

In addition, the Ministry of Health announced a mobilization of all health and medical institutions to receive the wounded in the bombing.

After the bombing, the capital witnessed intense security deployment and the closure of roads leading to the Green Zone.

GM DV's . Much like in the past . When it looks as if the CBI has the security and stability needed . With the addition of the  exchange rate change and talks of another , HCL progress and the massive drop in auctions. This is when the same enemy commits these same heinous attacks against the innocent. Painful .

I posted a few weeks ago this was going to happen. I feel sooo sorry for these people being brutally murdered over BS!! Poverty breeds crime and obviously these Ministers don't understand that. Whoever is behind this needs to be hung! One of the most cowardly acts is to kill innocent people. With all of the international assistance how in the hell did this happen. While some Iraqis are upset about solemoni being killed they need to worry about their own people. The Government is going to try to borrow money next mark my word. If Iran is behind this and it is a strong possibility they are, Iraq shouldn't want to have anything to do with Iran. They should close their Embassy and stop all trade ASAP!!!

If Iran did this then the International Coalition needs to come together and bomb the s$%t out of Iran. This is sooo sad!! They didn't waste time to test Biden at all....SMH! I have always said man is the devil and religion is a tool used to brain wash people. How can you let someone talk you into blowing yourself up. During the Iraq war these suicide bombers were high on opium because you have to be on another level to kill yourself while these fat slob Ministers sit back and enjoy the finer things in life. We all have been duped. There is no mutant coming out of the middle of the earth with a pitch fork making people do evil things and he is also walking the earth at the same time. Wake up people man is the devil and this is a prime example!!

They know Biden’s administration is a third Obama term so they will get whatever they want and do whatever they want.  Remember John Kerry was Iran this time last year telling Iran that they just needed to hold tight until the election because Trump would not be re-elected.  Iran and China are to conglomerate into one power source and America was in the way.
