Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday received a phone call from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, discussing the relations between Erbil and Washington.

PM Barzani explained in a Twitter statement that the pair shed light on "continuous" strengthening of the relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, while discussing the remaining disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, with the premier suggesting that Washington plays a role in the negotiations between the regional and federal governments.

"A pleasure to talk to @SecPompeo today. We focused on continuous strengthening of KRG-US relations, the role the US can play in KRG-Baghdad talks, and regional issues," he wrote on Twitter.

"I took the opportunity to thank Secretary Pompeo for his personal support for the people of Kurdistan"

Barzani's office said in a statement that the two leaders also exchanged views on strengthening the ties between Erbil and Washington, especially in the field of energy, while highlighting the importance of US's continued assistance to the Peshmerga forces.

The security situation in the areas between the Kurdistan and Syria and the importance of implementing the Sinjar agreement between Erbil and Baghdad to help the displaced people return to their places of origin, were also discussed during the phone call, according to the statement.

The Kurdistan government submits a request to Washington to send troops to the borders of the region

The spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Government, Jutiar Adel, announced, on Wednesday, that his government submitted a request to the United States of America to send forces to the borders between the Kurdistan region and Syrian Kurdistan.  

Adel said in a press conference followed by "People" (December 23, 2020), "The Kurdistan Regional Government officially requested America to send forces to the borders between the Kurdistan region and Syrian Kurdistan to show the goodwill of the Kurdistan region that it does not want war, and to better protect the borders." .  

  

Yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, and discussed a number of security files.  

A statement issued by the US State Department, of which "People" received a copy, (December 22, 2020) stated, "Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Masrour Barzani, and the Minister expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government to reach Reached an agreement on the budget and encouraged all parties to continue their commitment to achieving a mutually fair outcome. "  

He continued, "The Minister and Prime Minister Barzani also discussed regional security challenges, de-escalation at the borders, and the need for close and continuous cooperation between the coalition and the United States, the government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government."
