Arar Crossing - Twitter
It was agreed to open the crossing, which will be opened within 7 days after a 29-year closure (Twitter)

Iraq and Saudi Arabia agreed to reopen the Arar border crossing between the two countries, which has been closed for 29 years, during a videoconference held on Tuesday evening between Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman .

According to a joint statement issued after the meeting, it was agreed to reopen the crossing, which will be inaugurated within 7 days.

The Arar border crossing between Iraq and Saudi Arabia is located in the Anbar Province, in the west of the country, and was completely closed after the first Gulf War in 1991, in addition to another crossing known as the Jumajim crossing, and it is located between the Samawah desert (southern Iraq) and Saudi Arabia.

The joint statement indicated that the Saudi Commercial Attaché in Baghdad will be opened soon, explaining that the two sides have agreed on the importance of expanding and strengthening the horizons of bilateral cooperation, in a way that serves the interests of the two countries in the political, security, trade, investment and tourism fields, and building on what has been previously achieved results in mutual visits between the two countries , During the last period.

The two sides stressed the need for continued joint cooperation to confront the threat of extremism and terrorism, as they are an existential threat to the countries of the region and the world. And they agreed to continue supporting Iraq's efforts, in cooperation with the International Coalition, to combat terrorism and extremism.

They stressed the importance of cooperation in securing the borders between the two countries, intensifying cooperation and exchanging views on issues and issues of concern to the two countries on the regional and international arenas, in a way that contributes to supporting stability in the region and the world and enhancing security.

It is noteworthy that the past months have witnessed frequent meetings between Iraqi and Saudi officials, to discuss preparations for the reopening of the Arar border crossing between the two countries.

And last Sunday, the Popular Mobilization Authority announced the establishment of a dirt berm near the Arar border crossing, explaining that the embankment represents a step to dismember the desert in front of the terrorist groups.

A member of the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Karim, considered that such measures could limit infiltration operations, indicating in a previous interview with Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed that trenches and barriers are among the barriers that could be established in the areas of attacks.

Karim pointed out that the border areas require other measures, such as reinforcing them with a system of surveillance cameras, setting up towers, patrolling, establishing police stations, as well as conducting security operations, stressing the need for continued efforts to stop the flow of terrorist elements.

The crossing was scheduled to reopen last September, according to Iraqi officials, who said at the time that all security and technical measures had been completed, including the arrival of immigration and customs officers and inspectors to the crossing, but the port was not opened at that time, without explaining the reasons for that.

Saudi Arabia also needs to diversify away from oil

They all do, IMF been saying diversify for over a decade, they pretty much ignore it. Now oil is cheap for now, even thou it was $1.45 a few days ago at Sam's, now it $2 bucks. Which it still good if it holds. I remember gas shortage, rotating licence plate to get gas. Barrel was over $100 and then some. Now the talk is eliminating oil in the US, go back to be dependent on others. Anyhow Good hearing from you Ms.C.
