What the Latest Betting Market Action Says About Whether Trump or Biden Will Win the Presidential Election

There are just 15 days to go until voting in U.S. presidential election ends—and after the failure of the polls to correctly predict the winner last time around, no one is ready to make too much of what they show now. (For the record, they point toward a victory by former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump.) And that’s why we watch the betting markets.

Where we were. On Friday, the latest Real Clear Politics polling data shows Biden with a 9.4 percentage point lead over Trump, down from 10 points earlier in the week, while Biden had a 65.7% chance of winning the election, according to RCP. Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight puts the odds of a Biden win at 87%.

Where we are. The betting odds didn’t shift much immediately following dueling Town Halls from Trump and Biden last week, they made a big move over the weekend. RCP’s betting average gives Biden a 58.6% chance of winning, down from a peak of 67.5% on Oct. 11. Biden leads Trump by 8.9 points in Real Clear Politics’ general election average.

What’s next. The Town Halls are over, and everyone is looking ahead to the debate between Trump and Biden on Oct. 22. Stimulus talks remain ongoing, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has put a 48-hour deadline on getting a deal done. Expect a slog between now and Nov. 3.

Well if Biden wins after this then you do indeed get what you vote for, and I fail to believe the American people want to put a crook in office who couldn't even get a security clearance after what he has done. Check it out.

And you actually believe silencing the opposition is a good thing?

What you and your Constitutional hating friends fail to understand is the reaction that your Constitutional hating has created.

In the last election some 138 million votes were cast altogether. This election is going to see somewhere in the vicinity of 165 million votes. With Trump getting upwards of 100 million votes. And most likely 48 States.

Why, you ask?

Because people like you have pi$$ed everyone who isn't ignorant or pure evil off. You Changed this election from a political choice and turned it into a choice of survival. In doing this you have unintentionally alienated 50% of the Democrat party.

It's truly sad where people like you and your Constitutional hating friends have brought us

Deny it all you want, but when this is over God will hold people like you accountable with the blood of Americans on your hands. The blood that is yet to flow in the streets is because of the hate people like you spewed for years. All simply because you never knew when to just let it go.

That's because of two things.

1. I don't carry Trump's water, I carry THE TRUTH.

2. People like you have convinced me that this election is no longer about either political figure but about the survival of the Constitution. And you know EXACTLY where I will come down on that issue.

Early in-person voting begins today in Florida, the battleground state where the Trump and Biden campaigns have increasingly dedicated their time and money in the final weeks of the presidential campaign.

The two campaigns have flooded the state with ads as polls show a tight race there. The Sunshine State's 29 electoral votes are crucial to a win for both President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris will be in Orlando and Jacksonville Monday to encourage early voting. The California senator is restarting live campaigning after she canceled several weekend campaign events because members of her staff tested positive for COVID-19.

The two camps also are looking ahead to Thursday, when Biden and Trump will meet in a final debate in Nashville and the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote on the confirmation of Trump's Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

Trump denies aides think he will lose election, says Fauci is a disaster

Facing polls that give Joe Biden double-digit leads – and news reports that some of his aides believe he will lose the election – President Donald Trump sought Monday to boost the morale of his staff with a pep talk.

"These are suppression stories and suppression polls," Trump said during a 25-minute conference call.

Trump claimed "internal polls" show him ahead in key states – though he did not share details – and attacked reporters for promoting "fake news" about doubts within his campaign team.

The incumbent repeated deeply personal attacks on Biden, calling him "corrupt" and saying "he should be in jail," despite a lack of any evidence of wrongdoing by the Democratic nominee.

The president also criticized members of his own administration, singling out Dr. Anthony Fauci and saying that firing the infectious diseases expert would be more trouble than it's worth.

Trump claimed Fauci drops a "bomb" every time he goes on television, but "there's a bigger bomb if you fire him. This guy's a disaster."

Voters in numerous polls have questioned Trump's handling of the COVID-19 outbreak, but Trump said people don't want to hear about the pandemic and are saying "just leave us alone."

"People are tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots," Trump said.

Published polls paint a different picture than the one Trump gave his staff.

An analysis of various polls from FiveThirtyEight gives Biden 52.5% of the national vote, compared to 41.8% for Trump, a difference of 10.7 percentage points.

The FiveThirtyEight analysis also gives Biden leads of more than 6.5 percentage points in the pivotal states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Fauci says he's 'absolutely not' surprised Trump got COVID-19

Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said that it came as no shock to him when President Donald Trump announced he had tested positive for COVID-19 because the president regularly eschewed the use of masks "as a statement of strength" and put himself in "precarious" situations.

Fauci, who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, was asked in a CBS News "60 Minutes" interview that aired Sunday if he was surprised the president contracted the coronavirus.

"Absolutely not," Fauci replied.

Fauci said he believes Trump – who rarely wears a mask in public, particularly before he became infected – avoids masks because he sees it as "a statement of strength, like, 'We're strong, we don't need a mask,' that kind of thing."

COVID stimulus updates: Pelosi says there's a 48-hour deadline to get deal done

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Sunday the White House has 48 hours to reach a deal on COVID-19 relief before the Nov. 3 election.

"I’m optimistic," Pelosi told ABC News "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos. "Because again, we’ve been back and forth on all of this."

When pressed on whether Americans would see a COVID relief package passed before the Nov. 3 election, Pelosi said “that depends on the administration."

“With all due respect to some of the people in the president’s administration, they are not legislators,” Pelosi said. The speaker then said “we now have agreement in the language,” though talks remained ongoing.

The week in polls: Trump roars back in Florida, Biden gains in Georgia

As millions of Americans continue to cast their ballots in early voting, the polls have finally caught up to most of the biggest news events around the campaign, and their results include voter reactions to the first debate, the vice presidential debate, Trump's COVID-19 infection and his subsequent recovery.

They have found Biden still holding a commanding lead nationally (though down slightly from last week) and leading in 10 of 12 swing states. But Trump regained a slight polling average lead in Ohio and ate a big chunk out of Biden's leads in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. Trump also erased much of Biden's gains in Florida from last week, which some Democrats had hoped signaled their nominee was pulling away in the crucial Sunshine State.

The USA TODAY average of averages is based on the polling averages calculated by RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight. This week, we added Iowa to the list of swing states we are monitoring between now and the Nov. 3 election.

Trump on the trail: Donald Trump speaks in Nevada on his current political strategy - attacking Joe Biden

Senate races

Alabama: Don't count Jones out?

Polling has been relatively sparse on the Senate race between Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who eked out a surprise special election victory in 2017, and former football coach Tommy Tuberville, but the three surveys conducted since the end of July have found Jones trailing by double-digits.

According to a FM3 Research poll released Friday, however, Jones is not out of the race. The survey found him leading Tuberville by 1 point, 48%-47%, among Alabama voters.

Maine: Collins down 7 points to Gideon in new poll

Incumbent Sen. Susan Collins continues to trail state House Speaker Sara Gideon, according to Pan Atlantic Research's Omnibus Poll which found Gideon up 47%-40%. Most polls for the past few months have Gideon with a slight lead and she is up by 4.2 points in the RCP polling average.

Montana: Signs of life for Bullock

After an Emerson College poll last week found Sen. Steve Daines leading former Gov. Steve Bullock 52%-43% among likely Montana voters, two polls this week indicated the race is virtually dead even.

A Public Policy Polling survey released Monday found Bullock and Daines tied among registered voters and a poll from Montana State University-Bozeman released Wednesday found Bullock leading Daines 49%-47%.

North Carolina: Can Cunningham survive texting scandal?

It remains to be seen how much political fallout Democrat Cal Cunningham will suffer after admitting he had sent texts of a sexual nature to a woman who is not his wife.

An Emerson College poll conducted since the scandal broke and released Thursday found Cunningham had slipped 5 points to a 45%-44% lead over Sen. Thom Tillis since its last poll on the race in September. But a Siena College/New York Times survey released Wednesday found Cunningham up 41%-37% over Tillis, just a 1-point slip for Cunningham from the month before.

A Monmouth University poll released Tuesday found Cunningham's lead had grown in the past month by between 1 and 5 points, depending on the level of turnout. Only 14% said the texts were disqualifying, while 51% said the issue was a private matter and 32% said the scandal called his character into question.

"North Carolinians may frown on Cunningham’s behavior but few think it has any bearing on his fitness for office," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

South Carolina: Graham pulling away from Harrison?

After several recent polls that found Sen. Lindsey Graham in a virtual tie with his Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison, a New York Times/Siena College poll on Thursday found the incumbent with a 46%-40% lead. It was the second survey to find Graham with a 6-point lead this week after a Morning Consult poll published Tuesday found him up 48%-42%.

Most minds are made up: Who's undecided? Donald Trump's toughest hurdle to pull off a win

Poll-pourri

A Georgia peach of an outlier?

A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday found Biden up 7 points among likely voters in Georgia, 51%-44%. Most other polls in the state have indicated a much tighter race, including one released the same day by SurveyUSA that found Biden up by 2 points, 48%-46%.

The Quinnipiac poll also found Biden and Trump in an essential dead-heat in Ohio, with Biden at 48% among likely voters and Trump at 47%.

White Christian support for Trump slips

Though Trump still leads Biden in overall support among White Christians in the U.S., that support dropped by 8 points among White Catholics to 52%-44%; 6 points among White non-evangelical Protestants to 53%-43% and 5 points among White evangelicals to 78%-17%, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

The poll found Biden leading among all other religious groups surveyed, including Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics, Jews and the religiously unaffiliated.
