A new study found that humans are still evolving and "at a faster rate than at any time during the past 250 years."
Scientists discovered an increased proliferation of an artery in the forearm, which usually disappears about eight weeks after birth, since the late nineteenth century.
It is called the median artery, as the structure begins to disappear, and two more arteries form in its place. However, there was an increase in cases with all three. The middle artery is an important vessel in the fetal cycle, carrying blood through the forearm and hand. After birth, the artery is retracted and replaced by the radial artery and ulnar artery. "Since the eighteenth century, anatomists have been studying the spread of this artery in adults, and our study shows that it is clearly increasing," said Dr. Teegan Lucas, from Flinders University.
The spread began in about the 1880s in 10% of the population, but by the 20th century, cases had increased to 30%.
The team found that this artery is present in 35% of people, and it is believed that those born 80 years from now will carry a median artery.
The discovery was made by experts at Flinders University and the University of Adelaide.

The prevalence rate was about 10% for people born in the mid-1880s, compared to 30% for those born in the late 20th century, so this is a significant increase in a fairly short period of time when it comes to development.
This increase could be due to genes mutations associated with median artery development or health problems in mothers during pregnancy, or indeed both.
If this trend continues, the majority of people will have a median forearm artery by the year 2100.
The team suggests there are benefits to the median artery, as it increases the overall blood supply and can be used as a substitute for surgeries in other parts of the human body. They refer to this as "partial evolution" in humans.
Professor Maciej Heinberg, a lead mineralogist, from the University of Adelaide, said: “The median artery is an excellent example of how we evolved because people who were recently born have a higher prevalence of this artery, compared to humans of previous generations. We collected all the data published in the anatomical literature and continued the autopsy, which was donated to studies in Adelaide. We found that about a third of Australians have a median artery in their forearm and that everyone will have it by the end of the century if this process continues. ”
The middle artery is not the only indication that humans are still evolving, as there are cases of individuals born without a wisdom tooth.
The teams say this is because human faces have become smaller, providing less space for these teeth.
"We also find that many people have extra joints in the feet - abnormal connections between two or more bones," added Dr. Lucas.
At the beginning of the millennium, the prevailing belief stopped human evolution before the rule of the pharaohs.
But recent research indicates that the genetic change occurred 100 times faster in the past 5,000 years, than in any other period.
