Global Trade: More Negative Consequences If The Coronavirus Re-Emerges

On October 7, 2020

The Independent / - The World Trade Organization said that global trade will contract less sharply this year than previously expected, confirming that there may be more negative results if the Corona virus reappears in the fourth quarter.

The Geneva-based organization expects merchandise trade to decline by 9.2% in 2020 and grow by 7.2% in 2021. The World Trade Organization had forecast last April that global trade would decline by at least 12.9% this year, followed by an increase of 21.3%.

World Trade Organization analysts raised their expectations for 2020 after increasing trade in June and July, when the lockdown was lifted due to the Corona epidemic. They warned that trade expansion could slow again once the export congestion was removed.

"There may be more negative results if the Corona virus reappears in the fourth quarter," the World Trade Organization said in a statement.
