North Dakota community rallies to help farmer harvest crops after heart attack

After a North Dakota man suffered a heart attack, dozens of his neighbors gathered together to help him harvest his crops — putting their own crop-picking on hold in the process.

Lane Unhjem, who farms durum wheat and canola at his farm near Crosby, North Dakota, went into cardiac arrest after his combine harvester caught on fire.

When his neighbors got word, dozens of them gathered at Unhjem's farm with a menagerie of equipment in tow. Per Don Anderson, one of the neighbors who aided Unhjem, nearly a dozen combines were taken to the farm.

Neighbors who got involved told KFYR-TV in Bismarck, North Dakota that helping the family was "just kind of the farming way of life."

"Everybody knows the Unhjems and they’re good people and good in the community," Jenna Binde, a family friend, told KFYR.

You reap what you sow! Thats the old saying that can apply to a lot of things in life. Well, today it has a two fold...

The group was able to harvest over 1,000 acres worth of crops in seven hours.

"The Unhjems have a beautiful crop that will be safe in the bins today, and more importantly they have the comfort of knowing that they have a community of friends that are helping, praying and doing whatever they can to help them get through this tough time," wrote Anderson in a post that went viral Saturday.

Unhjem is still hospitalized, but is in stable condition, per KFYR. Neither Anderson nor Unhjem responded to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
