Twitter announced on Tuesday that it is facing a fine of up to $ 250 million by the United States Federal Trade Commission.
The company stated in a statement, “On July 28, it received a draft complaint from the Federal Trade Commission alleging that the company violated its agreement with it in 2011, according to the Engadget website.

The charges relate to the company using the phone numbers and email addresses provided by users for security and safety considerations, in order to send advertisements addressed to them during the period from 2013 to 2019.

And Twitter admitted in October 2019 that it had inadvertently sent advertisements to users through their contact information, which was provided to the company for security and safety purposes.

The company expects that the complaint of the Federal Trade Commission will result in a fine of Twitter between 150 and 250 million dollars, noting that the complaint has not yet been resolved, and there are no assurances regarding the timing or conditions for its final settlement.

According to the Financial Times, the US Federal Trade Agreement with Twitter prohibits the latter from misleading "consumers" about the extent to which they protect the security, privacy, and confidentiality of their data, and forces them to "create and maintain a comprehensive information security program."
