Today, Tuesday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards bombed an American aircraft carrier with missiles during military exercises in the Gulf, which the United States described as "reckless and irresponsible."

The exercises, which were called "the 14 greatest messenger maneuvers," according to the Arabic version of the official news agency, "IRNA", near the Strait of Hormuz, the main sea lane for one-fifth of the world's oil production, on the basis of an increased tension between Iran and the United States.

Video footage of the exercises showed that the Revolutionary Guards' air and naval forces were preparing to launch an offensive off the coast in the southwest of the country.

Speed boats appeared sailing within a specific formation before the ground forces fired artillery shells while a missile was fired from a helicopter.

The footage showed a model of the American Nimitz aircraft carrier, with rows of fighter planes on both sides of the runway.

Then the official television moved on to a snapshot showing missiles as they were launched into the sea from trucks, before it showed damage to the aircraft carrier holographic structure.

Another missile was fired from a helicopter, behind smoke, before apparently hitting the edge of the stereo.

Then, the armed forces personnel were seen landing on its surface before surrounded by about ten speed boats.

"What was shown today in these exercises, at the level of the Air Force and the Navy, was all offensive," Revolutionary Guards commander Major General Hussein Salami told state television.

The Revolutionary Guards website, "Cipaniose", quoted the spokesman, General Abbas Nilfroshan, as saying that new long-range missiles were launched during the exercises.

"I used some snap weapons and equipment, like long-range ballistic missiles, capable of hitting floating attack targets from a remote location," he said.

The US-based Bahrain Fifth Fleet criticized Iran for using the fake aircraft carrier, which first appeared in satellite imagery on Monday.

"We are aware of Iranian exercises to attack the model of a similar aircraft carrier," Fifth Fleet spokeswoman Rebecca Ribaritch said in a statement to the AFP office in Dubai on Tuesday.

"The US Navy is conducting defensive exercises with our partners to enhance maritime security and freedom of navigation, while Iran is conducting offensive maneuvers in an attempt to intimidate," she added.

In a statement to AFP, Rebecca Ribaric previously confirmed, "We believe in the ability of our navy forces to defend themselves against any naval threat."

The maneuvers come just days after Tehran accused two American fighters of intercepting an Iranian passenger plane over Syrian territory.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated since U.S. President Donald Trump announced his country's unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the major powers in 2018.

The two sides have been on the verge of a war twice since June 2019, when the Revolutionary Guards shot down a US plane marching in the Gulf, and tensions rose further after the killing of the Quds Force commander, General Qassem Soleimani, with a raid by a US plane marching near Baghdad airport in January 2020.

One of the latest confrontations occurred in mid-April, when the United States accused the Revolutionary Guard of using speed boats to harass its warships in the Gulf.

USA: Iran Military Exercise in Gulf "Irresponsible and Reckless"

1595956828808.jpg

29th July, 2020

The United States Navy on Tuesday criticized Iran as "irresponsible and reckless" for conducting an exercise involving firing a missile at a replica aircraft carrier in Gulf waters.

Iran's navy fired a missile from a helicopter at a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday – a fake one, that Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard had towed into the strategic waterway as part of war games and military drills that illustrate the persistent threat of conflict between Tehran and Washington.

Footage broadcast on Iranian state TV showed the replica vessel being struck by the projectile as part of an exercise Iran called "Great Prophet 14." Iranian commandos subsequently fast-roped down from the helicopter onto the mock Nimitz-class carrier –resembling a ship the U.S. Navy routinely sails into the Persian Gulf – as other Iranian navy vessels encircle the vessel, likely a barge, kicking up white waves in their wake.

Commander Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said in an emailed statement that the Navy was aware of the Iranian military exercise that involved attacking a mock-up of a vessel similar to a motionless aircraft carrier. "This exercise has not disrupted coalition operations in the area nor had any impacts to the free flow of commerce in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters," she said.

In a similar exercise in 2015 Iran's navy sunk a replica U.S. aircraft carrier. About 20% of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the entry point to the Persian Gulf.

Tensions between Iran and the U.S. have sharply escalated since 2018, when President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and reimposed sanctions that have restricted Tehran's oil exports and brought its economy to a standstill. Last summer, Washington blamed Tehran for a series of mysterious incidents targeting the region's oil tankers and the two nations appeared to be on the brink of war in January after a U.S. drone strike killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad. Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles targeting U.S. forces in Iraq.
