Hong Kong draws the curtains on its freedom: China opens its new office for intelligence agents who can now operate freely in the city under new security law

  • Beijing´s national security office was inaugurated in Hong Kong today
  • Comes as new national security law prohibits 'terrorist activities' in the territory
  • Last week, the city criminalized the pro-democracy slogan 'Liberate Hong Kong'

By MILLY VINCENT FOR MAILONLINE and AP

PUBLISHED: 01:16 EDT, 8 July 2020 | UPDATED: 06:00 EDT, 8 July 2020

Beijing has inaugurated its national security office in Hong Kong today, where China's intelligence agents will monitor the semi-autonomous territory's internal affairs for 'terrorist activities or foreign intervention'.

The opening came just over a week after China's central government imposed a tough new law on the city that critics view as a further deterioration of freedoms promised to the former British colony.

Today Hong Kong's education bureau announced that schools must not allow students to play, sing or broadcast the protest anthem 'Glory to Hong Kong' because it contains political messages.

Last week, the city criminalized the pro-democracy slogan 'Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time' under the new national security law, which took effect on June 30.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jenin Hennes-Blackshart, expressed on Tuesday to help Erbil and Baghdad to reach a radical long-term agreement on their outstanding differences.

A statement issued by the Kurdistan Regional Government responded to Shafaq News, that its president, Masroor Barzani, had received Blashart today.

The statement added that the meeting discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the ongoing efforts to solve the outstanding problems between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed her willingness to help the regional government and the federal government in order to reach a comprehensive and radical long-term agreement that satisfies both parties and is in the interest of all Iraqis.

The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government indicated that negotiations with the Federal Government are continuing in order to resolve all outstanding issues through an agreement based on the constitution, stressing the need to activate the joint security coordination mechanism between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army in the Kurdish regions outside the administration of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The Deputy of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Dylan Ghaffour, said on Wednesday that talks between Baghdad and Erbil will resume next week, noting that the two sides have not reached a conclusion regarding the oil file

Ghafour told Shafaq News, "There is an intention and will among the negotiating delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government to resolve the differences and outstanding problems with Baghdad. She added, "The delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government will visit Baghdad next week to complete the talks, especially those related to oil and the salaries of the region's employees

Ghafour said that "the oil file is one of the thorny issues, and the negotiating delegations did not reach a result regarding it," noting that "there are problems technically", regarding the oil file.. She noted that "the two parties want to reach solutions and resolve differences and problems related to the two governments

Ghafour indicated, "The delegation will be headed by Prime Minister Masroor Barzani or his deputy, Qubad Talabani," stressing, "The delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government's determination to solve problems and reach positive results during his next visit

The previous Iraqi government headed by Adel Abdul-Mahdi had cut last April the salaries of state employees in the Kurdistan Region after accusing the region of not committing to an agreement to deliver 250 thousand barrels of oil per day to the company "Sumo" owned by Baghdad, which was denied by the government of Erbil

Al-Kazemi’s government agreed two months ago to launch salaries for one month for the region’s employees, and mortgaged it regularly on Baghdad and Erbil’s agreement on the oil file and the region’s share of the federal budget. Since the decision to cut the salaries of the province’s employees, the two sides have held three rounds of discussions in the capital, Baghdad, to resolve the differences

The military delegations of the two sides are also holding talks to form joint coordination centers in the disputed areas to fight the terrorist organization "ISIS", whose activity has increased in those areas since the beginning of the current world, taking advantage of the absence of coordination between Baghdad and Erbil

A Democratic Leader: Final Touches To Redeploy The Peshmerga And Ready To Rescue Crises With Baghdad

A Democratic Leader: Final Touches To Redeploy The Peshmerga And Ready To Rescue Crises With Baghdad

7/8/2020 23:53:51

A leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Imad Bajlan, revealed the final touches between Baghdad and Erbil, for the return of Wat Peshmerga to Kirkuk.

Baglan said (for Furat News) that "the security agreement for the return of the Peshmerga to Kirkuk is far from the application of Article 140," adding that "more than 130 terrorist operations took place in the disputed areas of Khanaqin passing through the Hamrin and Kirkuk basin," describing them as "hotspots."And ISIS takes advantage of the security vacuum at night to intimidate and displace the citizens." He referred to "a forthcoming visit in the next few days to a delegation from the Ministry of Defense to Arbil to put the finishing touches to the return of the joint deployment of the security forces," returning to it as a "military and security move by selection", recalling that "5 field committees were formed during the reign of Adel Abdul Mahdi’s government and after he stepped down from The authority stops the activity of the committees."

Baglan pointed out that "after the formation of the current government headed by Mustafa Al-Kazemi, these elves returned to their work, and the Peshmerga will not enter Kirkuk, but will be present at its outskirts to stabilize security." And our accusation of disturbing security in it is not correct." He continued, "40 villages in Khanaqin from the Kurds were displaced from their areas by the ISIS terrorist, security forces and the popular crowd were unable to protect them." Baglan said that "the Kurdistan government has expressed its willingness to solve the problems and its whistle-blowing, including the handover of border crossings and the oil of the region by resorting to the constitution, except that Baghdad used the salaries of employees as a pressure card on the region."

On the Turkish incursion, Baglan explained by saying that he "came according to an agreement concluded between Ankara and Baghdad in 1984 and renewed in 1995 and the federal government is the legal heir to the previous regime and must deal with this issue as it deals with neighboring countries."  And he went on to say, "Article 110 of the constitution recognizes that protecting borders is one of the priorities of the central government, and the leadership of the border guards over the federal government and their direct association with Baghdad," noting that "Baghdad did not move a resident and the region condemned this act, but the matter remains with the Iraqi government."

Regarding the security changes made by the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, Mustafa al-Kazimi, Baglan said, "We have reservations about the changes in the high security positions after excluding the Kurdish component from their approval, knowing that Articles 9, 105 and 106 of the constitution affirmed the participation of all components in the state system and important centers including security. "Synonym". He concluded Bajalan his speech by saying "the crisis of confidence between the government and the components of the Kurdish and Sunni list we do not want to make this a stumbling block changes and we support the government Kazmi in this critical period," noting that "the federal capital is not the property of one, but belongs to all and we took Mouncab where not a favor we".

On Thursday, the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee described the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government as "vulnerable" for not taking any action against the Turkish violation.

Committee member Badr Al-Ziyadi said in a statement to “Al-Maalouma”, “The government’s silence and the failure of the region to repel the Turkish incursion and prevent it from using Iraqi lands to strike the Workers’ Party indicates the weakness of the government,” noting that “the Turkish forces did not respect the rules of good neighborliness and international norms.”

He added that "the continuation of the Turkish incursion until today and the status of military barracks is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated," calling for "an official dialogue between Baghdad and Ankara to discuss the repeated attacks."

The deputy of the Al-Fateh Coalition, Mithaq Al-Hamedi, affirmed on Tuesday that the House of Representatives will discuss the violation of the US embassy and the Turkish incursion during the upcoming hosting of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi.

Kurdish media reported, quoting the member, that "the delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government is likely to visit Baghdad at the end of the current week, most likely," noting that "the delegation will be headed by the Deputy President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Qubad Talabani."

He pointed out that "reaching an agreement between the two sides has become an imperative and urgent matter" on both sides of the negotiations, pointing out that "the files that are to be discussed are related to the financial dues of the Kurdistan region, oil, non-oil imports, customs and border ports."

He explained that "the Baghdad government recognized all the files that the delegation of the Kurdistan region submitted to it recently, including the oil production file, as the delegation of the Kurdistan Regional Government provided statistics on the quantities produced, which amounted to 467 thousand barrels per day, of which 30 thousand barrels for local consumption, and the rest are exported, The numbers were also released on other imports."

Regarding Baghdad’s response to the oil partnership contracts concluded by the Kurdistan Regional Government, he noted that “Baghdad recognized these contracts, but says that their financial situation is difficult now, and they want the Kurdistan Regional Government to conduct matters with them at the present time with what is available to them, with the necessity of holding An agreement between the two parties."

It is mentioned that the most important outstanding issues between the two parties include the oil file, border crossings and airports, at a time when the poor economic and financial situation of the Kurdistan Regional Government is pushing Baghdad to raise the ceiling of its demands.

Leader Fawzi Akram Tarzi confirmed, on Saturday, that Al-Kazemi’s agreement with Kurdistan to return the Peshmerga and Asayish forces to Kirkuk is alarming, indicating that any security agreement between the center and the region in the absence of Turkmen and Arabs is rejected and invalid and we will face it with all the means guaranteed by the constitution.

Terzi pointed out that "the return of the Asayish officers and the return of the Peshmerga is against the constitution, because the Peshmerga are constitutionally guardians of the region, and they may not be present in any areas outside the region."

Thank you Chuck.  Do you know if Binance is in the US.

A good old friend of mine who runs a hedge fund told me to buy some XRP.

He wouldn’t tell me how much he bought but he said it was very considerable.

He is advising his clients to invest in Cryptos.  He also owns BTC and ETH.
