SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Saturday (June 20) to discuss the relations between Erbil and Baghdad.

NRT reporter Omed Muhammed said that Barzani was accompanied on the trip by vice presidents Mustafa Said Qadir and Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa.

On Wednesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said that a delegation would visit Baghdad next week to continue budget negotiations, which are vital to ensuring the financial health of the KRG and essentially the only way Erbil will be able to pay its bills moving forward.

It was not clear whether the visit portended a breakthrough or whether it was an attempt to break the logjam. On Friday, negotiators missed a 30-day deadline for securing a deal.

This is the first visit of such a high-ranking delegation from the Kurdistan Region to Baghdad since the completion of the new federal cabinet.

The fact that they are meeting in person says something about the seriousness of both parties to make a legit deal. Barzani has the authority to sign off on anything.....HCL, Article 140, oil obligations to SOMO and more. They were inches away from an agreement about a month ago when the 2nd level delegations met. Could this be 'IT' ???

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani  and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi discussed resolving Erbil-Baghdad issues through "national cooperation" in their first meeting in Baghdad on Saturday.

According to a readout from the Iraqi prime minister's office, Barzani and Kadhimi stressed "the importance of national cooperation and solidarity in order to overcome the current challenges, especially the economic crisis caused by the decline in global oil prices, which was caused by the corona pandemic."

President Barzani tweeted that he also met President Barham Salih and Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi.

Currently facing a severe economic crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the collapse of global oil prices, the new Iraqi government decided last week to scrap plans to hash out its 2020 budget and will instead focus on formulating a budget for 2021, due to a deficit in oil revenues.

The Kurdistan Region’s independent oil sales, budget disagreements, and the issue of the disputed territories continue to be points of contention between Erbil and Baghdad.

In his meetings with his Iraqi counterparts and other Baghdad authorities, Barzani has frequently reaffirmed the Region's readiness to resolve their issues on the basis of the constitution as well as supporting a stable and secure Iraq.

This is a developing story...
