America is moving to return Gilgamesh's dream to Iraqmoving to return Gilgamesh's dream to Iraq

 05/20/2020

Shafaq News / The US Department of Justice filed a complaint with the goal of returning a clay number of the name Gilgamesh, 4,000 years old, to Iraq, which is part of the well-known "Gilgamesh Epic". Al-Raqeem speaks in parts of the Great Flood and the Garden of Eden in the Akkadian language, and it was found in one of the libraries of the Assyrian kings near Mosul. It is believed that she fled to Jordan before 2001.

American federal judges are seeking to restore the nearly 4,000-year-old clay slab, which was purchased by Hobby Lobby, an American chain of arts and crafts store, located in Oklahoma City, the capital of Oklahoma, formerly known as the Hobby Lobby Creative Center, For display at the Washington-based "The Bible" Museum, while the cuneiform was described as "stolen Iraqi property" in a civil complaint filed on Monday, May 18th.

The details of the complaint summarize the journey of this part of the land of the oldest civilization, and a known story of creativity From the Library of the Palace in Ancient Mesopotamia to its current location in a warehouse of the Department of Homeland Security in Queens, New York.

According to the complaint submitted, a major international auction house, whose name was not mentioned in the complaint, withheld the source of the archaeological plank, known as Gilgamesh's dream plank, when it sold the plank to Hobby Lobby in 2014.

Agents from the Internal Security Investigations of the US Immigration and Customs Administration confiscated the plaque last year from the Bible Museum, which it said cooperated with the investigation. Note that the owners of "Hobby Lobby" are the founders of the Bible Museum.

Prosecutors say the 12.7 x 15.24 cm board, which Hobby Lobby bought for more than $ 1.6 million, is the property of the Iraqi government and must be returned.

"Whenever the looted cultural property is found in this country, the United States government will do everything in its power to preserve the heritage by   returning these artifacts to where they belong," Richard Donohue, the American attorney for the Eastern District in New York, said in a statement . He pointed out that "in this case, a major auction house failed to fulfill its obligations by reducing concerns by claiming that saying that the source of the piece is important Iraqi antiquities is fabricated saying, and the house withheld the correct information about the buyer that undermined the reliability of the source."

The Epic of Gilgamesh is a Sumerian poem believed to have been written at least 4000 years ago. Parts of it reflect the details of the Great Flood and the Garden of Eden from the Old Testament, which preceded it. A copy of the poem, consisting of 12 tablets written in the Akkadian language, was found in the ruins of the library in the Nineveh Palace in present-day Mosul, Iraq.

Gilgamesh saga tells the spectra of the hero who describes his dreams to his mother, who tells him that she expects the arrival of a new friend. His mother addresses him, "You will see him and your heart will laugh."

According to the complaint, the plaque appeared in or before 2001, when an unidentified American antiquities dealer examined it, and was placed with other pieces on the floor of an apartment in London for a well-known Jordanian antiquities owned directly from the Middle East. Two years later, the United States merchant returned with a cuneiform expert, who decided that despite the salt protrusions that made it difficult to read, the tablet was likely a piece of ancient literature "potentially rare and valuable", as well as a legal commercial document. The U.S. dealer bought several pieces, including Gilgamesh's dream plaque, for $ 50,350.

The case reappeared in 2007, when the piece was sold to other buyers, one of which listed it in the sales catalog, claiming that the tablet had been with one American owner for the past 25 years. The asking price in the catalog was $ 450,000, and it came with a false origination letter claiming to be non-original, and it was obtained at an auction in 1981 in San Francisco in a box of bronze pieces, according to the US complaint.

In 2013, the complaint says, a new owner of the tablet called the London Auction House International, wishing to sell it. But the American antiquities dealer told the head of the antiquities department at the auction house that the source of the piece would not go through the audit and would not be appropriate for the auction.

The following year, Hobby Shop bought the Tablet Lobby in a special sale, after her representative saw the tablet in London. The auction office shipped the plate to his New York office, and from there, he manually uploaded it to Hobby Lobby headquarters in Oklahoma City, "so Hobby Lobby could avoid incurring a sales tax in New York," according to prosecutors.

The Hobby Lobby Company fined $ 3 million in 2017 for failing to do due diligence after the federal authorities said they had bought thousands of artifacts that were smuggled out of Iraq. Some of the items on display in the Bible Museum were looted from ancient sites that were not previously known.

Steve Green, the museum’s board chairman, said in a statement last March that the institution had identified another 5,000 pieces of papyrus and 6,500 pieces of clay that would be returned to Egypt and Iraq.

In a 2017 settlement with federal authorities, Green committed to the museum, which exercises more supervision. Later that year, the Bible Museum contacted the auction house to verify information on the origins of Gilgamesh's tablet. US prosecutors say the auction house has withheld information.

For its part, the Iraqi Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities says it is trying to determine whether the Gilgamesh tablet is among the thousands of items stolen from one of its national museums in 1991. After Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait the previous year, the regime lost control of certain parts of Iraq. At least nine of the country's 13 regional museums were plundered in the turmoil.

Newspaper: Shiite parties are about to lose their influence for the "first time" .. Iran may not be silent!

2020.05.21

People - Baghdad

A press report, Thursday, sheds light on the changes that Iraq has witnessed at the political level during the past few months, which resulted in the outcome of the resignation of the government of Adel Abdul-Mahdi and the arrival of Mustafa al-Kazemi to head the government.

The report published by the London-based Al-Arab newspaper and its follower, “Nass” (May 21, 2020), said that “the Shi’ite political experience in Iraq is going through one of its worst periods, as it is about for the first time in nearly 17 years, to lose its influence that it built on an Islamic speech Militant, he derives his vocabulary from the Iranian case, which turned into a chronic headache in the region.

But the report also indicated, that "proceeding with the optimistic approach" that the new prime minister is taking, is "fraught with great dangers in Iraq, which Iran may not refrain from triggering a major internal confrontation on its soil, if it is confirmed that the prospects of understanding with Al-Kazemi, An American supporter is not promising. "

The following is the text of the report:

The Shiite political experience in Iraq is going through one of its worst periods, as it is about for the first time in nearly 17 years, to lose its influence, which it built on a hardline Islamic discourse, which derives its vocabulary from the Iranian case, which turned into a chronic headache in the region.

For the first time, Shiite politicians are unanimous that the process of selecting the new prime minister, Mustafa al-Kazimi, has emerged from the sphere of influence of political Islam in Iraq, after the power industry equation in Baghdad has turned from a trilogy in which the Shiite authority, the United States and Iran participate, into a quad, with the rising public entering the influence line

the subject.

For the first time, too, radical Shiite parties such as the Islamic Dawa Party led by Nuri al-Maliki, the stream of wisdom led by Ammar al-Hakim, the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr and the Supreme Council led by Muhammed Hammoudi are stepping back, in the process of selecting the prime minister, to make way for a figure placed in the Shiite liberal category to lead And lead the political process, after a more than a decade of dominance of figures with Islamic backgrounds on the reins of government, starting with Ibrahim Jaafari, and through Nuri al-Maliki and Haider al-Abadi, and ending with Adel Abdul-Mahdi.

But the new model, represented by Al-Kazemi, is not a product of a Shiite review of the experience of political Islam in Iraq, but rather the result of three variables. The first variable imposed by the conditions of the popular protest movement, which has shaken the traditional centers of power since last October, and the second is the assumption by some of the American administration hawks of the Iraqi file after the cold era of former President Barack Obama, and the third relates to the Iranian internal recession due to the US sanctions of an economic nature, whose impact deepened the pandemic Sk.

The radical Shiite current represented by the Hadi al-Amiri-led Fatah coalition, which has a close relationship with Iran, seemed to be watching as he watched the rise of the Al-Kazemi project, supporting a US-led external momentum, and internal being represented by Sunni Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi and veteran Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani.

Al-Halbousi and Al-Barzani do not relate to the experience of political Islam in governance, except as required by the necessities of the coalition and tactical partnerships.

Perhaps this explains the two leaders ’rush to announce al-Kazimi's support before he was formally mandated, in harmony with the American desire, as diplomatic sources indicate that Washington has communicated directly with Al-Halbousi and Barzani to urge them to support the new prime minister.

Perhaps the most prominent feature of Al-Kazemi's missile rise to the ruins of the experience of Shiite political Islam was the seizure of the Interior Ministry, which remained for years under the domination of the Badr Organization, which was founded in Iran to fight the Iraqi regime during the war of the eighties. For the first time, this bag is assumed by an officer who was enrolled in Iraq’s military schools during the era of Saddam Hussein’s regime, and he won the rank of a corner team, after successive management of this bag were political figures with militia backgrounds such as Baqer Solagh, Muhammad al-Ghabban, and Qasim al-Araji, all of whom came from the Badr Organization, which represented for years The most important arms of Iran in Iraq.

In the accounts of the observers, the best that the Shiite political parties of Islam wish is represented in the failure of Al-Kazemi during his term, which is fraught with the dangers of the oil price crisis and the Corona pandemic and others, to demonstrate that the imbalance does not lie in their approach in particular, but in the Iraqi political environment full of contradictions and tensions.

During the first ten days of the Kazemi government, three security operations, described as an earthquake, occurred, with organized crime gangs linked to Shiite militias following the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.

These gangs are accused of controlling the spirits trade through illegal paths and imposing royalties on merchants and contractors in Shiite strongholds in the city of Baghdad, and east of Diyala, where all goods imported from Turkey pass through the Kurdish region, and up to the Iraqi capital.

Since 2018, these gangs have taken the names of prominent pro-Iranian militias as a cover for their actions, giving them full immunity from security and judicial prosecution.

These gangs represent the alternative economy line to finance the activities of Iraqi groups with Islamic backgrounds, as the main financing line is very large shares and financial commissions paid by traders and investors who obtain formal contracts to implement projects for the benefit of the government.

Observers say that most Iraqi Shiite parties, currents, and factions with religious backgrounds, which are loyal to Iran, move within one or both of these lines, to ensure the funding that keeps them within the political competition circle on the one hand, and to maximize the resources allocated to maximize the welfare of their leaders.

With the country's massive financial revenue shortfall due to low oil prices and an international pessimistic view of projected levels of growth, the official funding line for Shi'a political Islam groups in Iraq is threatened to stop.

The situation of these groups can lead to suffocation, if the Al-Kazemi government goes ahead with its plan to dry up the sources of the alternative economy, which places these groups in front of two options; The first is the military confrontation with the state, drawing inspiration from the ISIS model of truncating a part of Iraq’s regions to administer it with the aim of continuing its funding resources, or agreeing to abandon many aspects of its power and concession in favor of imposing the law and sacrificing part of its followers and leaders, to remain within the state’s body awaiting an appropriate opportunity.

Observers do not doubt that the political parties, Shiite and Sunni Islam alike, will continue to monitor the scene, waiting for an appropriate opportunity to pounce on it and restore power directly.

Observers say that Al-Kazemi, who follows the policy of quiet containment of the large Iranian lines intertwined in Iraqi internal affairs, may not have to wait long to deliver greater strikes, in case the weakness appears in more time on these groups.

But proceeding with this optimistic approach is fraught with great dangers in Iraq, which Iran may not refrain from triggering a major internal confrontation on its soil, if it is confirmed that the prospects for understanding with Al-Kazemi, who is pro-American, is not promising.

Al-Ahed News- Baghdad
Member of Parliament Hazem Al-Khalidi stressed that in light of the escalation of the curves of the financial crisis that is ravaging the country to dangerous indicators at the present time due to the decline in global oil prices after the spread of the Corona pandemic, it was necessary in principle for the federal government to move urgently in order to take Austerity measures, according to a neutral economic perspective, to prevent wasting public money in a number of viable outlets.
In a statement, Al-Khalidi added in a statement, “Al-Ahed News” received a copy of it. As we put these priorities before the current government, we remind them of information received from us regarding the resigned previous government’s reopening of embassies and representations to Iraq in countries that do not have representation in our country or that we do not have communities in it. We do not have common interests with them, and these missions cost the government monthly large amounts of money that do not benefit from it, and it deprives citizens of benefiting from the allocation of these funds in carrying out projects that serve citizens.
And he stated that the previous government closed these 12 embassies and diplomatic missions between an embassy, a mission and a consulate, while the resigned government reopened it.
He emphasized, therefore, we sought every official and supervisory effort to follow up on this file, and as a result of that, a set of official books were sent to the Prime Minister, Mr. Foreign Minister, and the Minister of Planning to stop this waste of public money and take measures that would reduce the financial burdens of unrelated outlets The importance or service that would benefit the country. Finished 2
