Iranian lawmaker: The US strategy in Iraq is turning towards a confrontation with Tehran

A deputy in the Iranian parliament confirmed, on Wednesday, that the American military reinforcements in Iraq show that they are refocusing their regional strategy by shifting towards confrontation with Iran.

"The way in which the American bases in Iraq are developed indicates a tactical formation that can create tensions between Iran and the United States," Parliament member Heshmat Halahat Bishah said, according to the Financial Tribune, the Iranian economic newspaper.

And despite the decision of the Iraqi parliament calling for the expulsion of foreign forces, the United States has moved and armed its forces in that country and even has implemented plans to develop infrastructure in its bases. "The change of strategy occurred after Iran was attacked," said parliamentarian Falah Habeshah an American base in Iraq in response to the assassination of its commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad in early January.

He continued, “The Americans have mistakenly concluded that the winning card for Iran is its missile power and want to limit it,” stressing that Iran has other options to stand against the United States and that the only result of the last step will lead to the replacement of political dialogue between Tehran and Washington with military dialogue.”

The leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has announced that Tehran has the ability to define a target to place the satellite in a 36,000 km orbit.

Khamenei said on his official website: “Unfortunately, some countries consistently say we (the Iranians) should not, we cannot, but we can. When we can launch a missile into space at a speed of 7.5 thousand meters per second carrying an orbit into a satellite and after making significant progress in the defense industry, we can achieve a revolution in production."

He added: "The mind, the spirit capable of creating a satellite, can achieve another goal - putting the satellite into a 36,000 km orbit."

On April 22, Iran launched its first military satellite, Noor (Light), in orbit at an altitude of 425 km, with the assistance of the Cased launch vehicle. Its presence in orbit was confirmed by the 18th Squadron of the US Air Force's Outer Space Observation.

Who wants to make a bet that it will not make that orbit? Mishap of some sort I see happening.

Reuters: Iraq avoided a catastrophic spread of Corona

%D9%83%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-5-6

6th May, 2020

A Reuters report stated on Wednesday that Iraq avoided a catastrophic spread of Corona virus, as it has recorded less than 100 deaths so far, while it indicated that the virus causes great daily suffering to the Iraqis.

Reuters reported in its report, translated by the "Information Agency" that "the Corona pandemic is the source of the current Iraqi suffering, as the stopping of business and the curfew pushed some families to the worst imaginable poverty." The report added, "According to the Iraqi Ministry of Health, Iraq is avoid a catastrophic spread of the new Coronavirus, as approximately 2,200 infections have been recorded and fewer than 100 people have died, but as in many countries, the measures required, including the nationwide curfew in effect last March, have removed stores from businesses and left The breadwinners in the house, which affected the vulnerable sectors of the population severely.

A spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Planning, Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, said that "20 percent of the population currently lives in poverty and it is expected that the percentage will rise to nearly 30 percent this year due to people who left work as a result of the crisis." The Iraqi government has announced a monthly salary of $ 25 for families without government wages and who are struggling to obtain income, while Al-Hindawi said that "13 million people, or nearly a third of the Iraqis, applied for assistance."

The report pointed out that “the decline in oil prices, which represent almost all of Iraq’s revenues, is already putting pressure on the economy, forcing the government to consider reducing huge public sector salaries, as the price of oil has fallen by more than 55% since the beginning of the year, while Iraq faces the same dilemma that Most of the world faces it either to ease restrictions to aid in economic activity, or to keep closing to avoid the spread of the virus.

Trump thwarts legislation limiting his powers to launch military action against Iran

2020-04-30T203618Z_1943094477_RC28FG97W7

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump used a veto against a bill passed by both houses of Congress. Representatives and elders, to limit the president's ability to wage war against Iran.

Trump said in a statement released by the White House that the decision "was very humiliating and presented by Democrats as part of a strategy to win the elections on November 3 by dividing the Republican Party."

Trump criticized the draft for assuming that the president does not have the constitutional powers to use military force to protect the country from imminent danger.

Trump defended his decision to liquidate the commander of the Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, stressing that he had powers in accordance with the 2002 war mandate against Iraq and based on Article 2 of the constitution that defines the president's powers.

Supporters of the resolution believe that although Trump used his veto last year to decide to end military support for the Saudi-led forces in Yemen, he decided after a few months to stop supplying fuel to aircraft that help coalition forces in Yemen.

Member of the Parliamentary Crisis Cell, Abd Aoun Al-Abadi, denied on Thursday that there are 100% affected areas in Iraq , indicating that there is no need to impose regional isolation.

Al-Abadi said in a statement to "Al-Maalouma", that "talking about the discovery of Iraqi areas infested with the Corona virus at 100% is baseless", noting that "the real issue facing the country is the phenomenon of social rapprochement through birthdays, weddings, and conquests."

He added, "Iraq has not reached the endemic areas to take regional isolation," stressing that "all the symptoms that have emerged recently are fully controlled and there is no fear among the health authorities concerned."

The Director General of Rasafa Health Abdul-Ghani Al-Saadi confirmed, today, Thursday, that there is an urgent need to impose a comprehensive curfew for a period of not less than 14 days to reach safety.

"Five Eyes" Intelligence accuses China of hiding the source of "Corona"

Monday 04 May 2020

Capitals / agencies

As the deadly epidemic continues to claim the lives and wounding of thousands of people around the world, the "Five Eyes" intelligence organization, which includes the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Britain, has accused China of hiding information about the source of the spread of the Corona virus, while an expanded report written by a number of Top writers at the French newspaper Le Monde that put the Corona virus at an end to the world order that was established after the Second World War and for American leadership in the international arena.
Australian newspaper "Daily Telegraph" reported that the report consists of 15 pages prepared by the intelligence agency "Five Eyes", in which it accused China of "exposing other countries to danger" by hiding information about the virus, by silencing doctors and preventing them from talking about it Or "their" disappearance.
In its report, the intelligence agency claimed that Beijing destroyed evidence of the presence of the "Covid-19" virus in laboratories, and also refused to disclose biological information that helps scientists produce a vaccine for this virus.
According to the newspaper, according to the report, China had evidence of the possibility of the virus being transmitted from one person to another, but it "denied this until January 20."
The report indicated that on January 3, the National Health Commission of China ordered the destruction of samples of the "Covid-19" Corona virus and the non-publication of information related to this disease.
And Western intelligence reports stated that researchers discovered coronaviruses in a cave in Yunnan Province, where a remarkable genetic similarity was observed with COVID-19.
China has denied on more than one occasion the validity of these allegations and allegations, stressing that it is not based on any scientific information.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed its opposition to "fabricating false information and publishing it by any person or any organization," adding that China is "a victim of misinformation and not a source of it." In the same context, US and Australian intelligence earlier denied that the virus was a biological weapon, and confirmed investigations are continuing to determine the origin of the virus.

America’s Leadership
In addition, a number of senior journalists from the prestigious French newspaper "Le Monde" wrote in an article published by the newspaper on Sunday: "The rise of China played a major role in destabilizing the existing world order, based on the delay of the World Health Organization in warning the international community of the dangers of The epidemic is evidence of this international organization's reliance on Beijing. "
The article's authors expressed their conviction that "the United States no longer plays the role of world leader, as was the case in the twentieth century."
The French newspaper considered that if the ability of the United States to play the role of leadership in the world has declined more and more in recent years, the current crisis, which weakened America and made it the country most affected by the Corona virus, forced the Americans finally to abandon the claim of this leadership.
In addition, the newspaper considered that the COVID-19 epidemic dealt a serious blow to the unity of Europe, which has long been an ally of America, the European Union has been unable to support even the countries most affected by the epidemic,
Like Italy.
Le Monde journalists concluded that, in order to increase the impact on the creation of a new world order, the European Union must review its construction architecture and its own machinery.

Highest toll

US grants Iraq a summer break from Iran electricity sanctions

The Trump administration’s reprieve for Iraq from US sanctions on Iranian electricity imports will extend through September.

May 7, 2020

On May 7, shortly after new Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi received confirmation from parliament, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the new premier and told him that Washington will move forward with a 120-day waiver to allow Iraq to import electricity from Iran.

This seemed a gesture of support from the United States to the new prime minister, whose confirmation followed the failure of his two predecessors as prime minister-designate, Adnan al-Zurfi and Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi. Pompeo's move came after Washington had initially agreed April 26 to waiver of only 30 days.

Yet despite the reprieve the four-month waiver provides — as Iraq faces soaring temperatures and increased energy use in the summer — there remains a lot to be resolved between Washington and Baghdad when it comes to Iran’s role in the Iraqi energy sector.

Iraq is still Iran’s most loyal business partner despite hurdles imposed by sanctions, protests, the coronavirus crisis and — most importantly of all — the United States’ continuous pressure on Baghdad to try to get it to drop out of the deals to buy Iranian electricity and gas.

To date, the pressure from Washington has been somewhat muted, giving Iraq time to seek other offers. Yet outgoing Electricity Minister Louay al-Khateeb told Al-Monitor that despite Washington’s pressure to end energy imports from Iran, “I’m sure the US government will be more sensible and understanding as we move forward in protecting our strategic partnership and [helping us] survive the current pandemic and economic crisis.”

While the new Iraqi government has gotten a respite from the United States on breaking its dependence on Iranian electricity, the pressure won’t go away. Iraq will still have to choose whether to continue the partnership with the Iranian side, though Baghdad is unlikely — and unable — to take a hasty decision to withdraw.

The new electricity minister, Majid Mahdi Hantoush, is a technocrat who has served in the ministry since graduation. He’s the son of a famous Iraqi hydrologist, Mahdi S. Hantush, who founded the hydrology program at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and was a recipient of the Meinzer Award, among the most prestigious honors in hydrogeology.

Iran provides Iraq with around 1,200 megawatts of electricity per day, and 40 million cubic meters of gas. On Dec. 9, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said his country had signed a three-year cooperation agreement with Iraq for extending Iranian energy exports. On Nov. 9, Ardakanian had announced that the power grids of Iran and Syria were to be connected through Iraq, as Tehran and Damascus signed a preliminary agreement in this regard.

From an Iranian perspective, exporting electricity to surrounding countries, including Turkey, is part of Tehran's efforts to widen its financial resources; however, from US President Donald Trump’s point of view, this is an attempt to get around the sanctions imposed by Washington under the “maximum pressure” strategy that aims at drying up all sources of funds that might reach Iran.

Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, founder of Bourse & Bazaar, a London-based think tank focused on Iran's economy, told Al-Monitor, "The Trump administration paints Iran's electricity exports to Iraq and the involvement of Iranian contractors in the maintenance of Iraq's power grid as part of Iran's 'nefarious' influence over its neighbor.”

Batmanghelidj said the drivers in the electricity agreements between Iraq and Iran are economic as well as political. “It's not unusual for neighboring countries to have interconnected electricity grids and for one country to draw electricity from the other. Even the United States imports significant amounts of electricity from Canada,” he said.

Iraqi dependency on Iranian energy isn’t new, and it’s also the best option, according to Iraq’s former energy minister. Khateeb said, “The only available option we have now is the Iranian gas fuel and Iranian electricity supplies to bridge the power deficit in Iraq; so far, their prices, volumes and logistics are competitive with other suppliers, regionally and internationally.”

Khateeb said that during the year and a few months he was in office, his ministry increased electricity production from 15,800 megawatts to 19,270 megawatts. He said additional energy is needed, as Iraq’s power demand is expected to rise to 27,000 megawatts by the end of the year, up from 25,000 megawatts currently.

As part of its efforts to diversify away from Iranian electricity, Iraq signed a deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council to add some 500 megawatts to its grid during 2020. But the 300-kilometer (186-mile) line that would run from Kuwait to Iraq’s southern port of Faw could cover only quarter the energy imported from Iran; hence, it can’t be seen as a potential replacement in case the United States stops issuing waivers.

The summer of 2018 witnessed one of the worst electricity crises in Iraq in years, when Iran had to cut power to the neighboring country due to rising domestic demand, as was announced by the Iranian side, and a $1 billion debt, as was reported then by Al-Monitor.

The energy sector in Iraq has been for years the subject of strong criticism because of corruption, inefficiency and political meddling. The power outages prompted bloody riots in the southern city of Basra and other affected cities. The riots helped bring about political demands, some of which had to do with countering Iran; at one point, the Iranian Consulate in Basra was set ablaze by protestors.

Batmanghelidj said he believes the relatively high Iraqi dependence on Iranian energy supply is a sign of the poor state of Iraq's production and distribution infrastructure. He said, “But the same economic logic that means it is in Iran's interest to supply electricity and gas now also means that it is in Iran's interest for Iraq to become a more stable and faster-growing economy so that other kinds of trade between the two countries can grow. Sanctions pressure from the Trump administration is making this a more contentious issue than it needs to be.”

While it’s not clear whether the United States will continue to extend waivers, the Iraqi government hopes that it will be able to cover its needs and, in the long term, upgrade its energy sector. Khateeb, however, said the only recipe to do that is “three to four years with a stable government that enjoys full executive authority to implement its ambitious program to achieve energy independence without political interference.”

Associated Press: America pulls two Patriot batteries and
fighters from Saudi Arabia

cc167e9e-54c7-469e-816f-4582ce7cc92e.jpeg

7th May, 2020

The United States will withdraw two Patriot missile batteries that were protecting oil installations in Saudi Arabia, and some combat aircraft from the kingdom, and America had deployed months ago Patriot soldiers and systems in Saudi Arabia to protect its oil facilities from attacks, US news agency Associated Press reported.

The Associated Press indicated that it is not clear whether the ongoing oil dispute or the dispute over another version of the Patriot that Riyadh wants is the factor in America's decision to withdraw some of its forces and equipment.

The agency also noted that the American move comes at a time when the United States sent Patriot systems to Iraq to protect American and allied forces there, which were attacked by an Iranian missile attack earlier this year.

Reducing the spread

The Wall Street Journal quoted US officials on Thursday as saying that the United States would begin withdrawing Patriot anti-missile batteries from Saudi oil facilities, and added that America was considering reducing its naval deployment in Gulf waters. The newspaper said that the American forces also withdrew dozens of its soldiers who were deployed in Saudi Arabia in the wake of a series of attacks targeting oil facilities, and Washington held Iran responsible for it.  The newspaper added that these steps from the Pentagon are based on officials’ estimates that Tehran is no longer a threat to the strategic interests of the United States. The newspaper said that reducing the troop presence in the area also included the departure of two fighter squadrons.

In the same vein, US President Donald Trump said Thursday that "there are rich countries that we protect for nothing, and if we provide protection for some countries, they should respect us." President Trump said in a press statement during his meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott that Saudi Arabia is not among the countries involved in his statements.

Saudi readiness

The American president added that the Kingdom is a rich country and has shown its willingness to bear some expenses, which no other American president had previously asked for, in a sign of Riyadh's agreement to bear the burdens of deploying American forces in Saudi lands last August.

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Virginia Mohammed Al-Ahmad said that the Wall Street Journal's publication of the Patriot withdrawal cannot be separated from the American anger over Riyadh because of its oil policies and the war of prices and quotas it adopted recently, and the huge losses it caused to the American oil industry.

And a few days ago, Republican Senator Kevin Kramer asked the American President to withdraw his country’s forces and air defense systems from the Kingdom’s territories in response to Riyadh’s war in oil after the collapse of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’s agreement with Russia to extend the agreement to reduce oil production and support crude prices in global markets.

Reuters published a week ago a special report in which it said it had learned from its sources that in the midst of the recent war in oil markets, President Trump threatened to cut off US military support for Saudi Arabia if it did not stop dumping markets, in a call he made with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on 2 Last April.

Trade negotiators in Washington and Beijing agree to implement the trade deal

Trade negotiators in Washington and Beijing agree to implement the trade deal

8th May, 2020

Senior officials in the United States and China have pledged to provide favorable conditions for the implementation of the bilateral trade deal and economic and public health cooperation

A statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce in China and transmitted by Bloomberg Agency Thursday evening revealed a phone call between US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthears and Chinese Vice President Liu He

The two sides spoke during the phone call on issues of economy and public health, with discussion of trade matters, including the first stage of the trade deal, signed last January

The phone call comes at a time when investors have raised concerns globally about increasing tensions between the two largest economies in the world, as the United States accuses China of being the cause of the spread of the "Coffid-19" globally

A trade war had sparked Washington and Beijing over the past two years amid the imposition of customs duties on each other's products before the tensions and bickering between the two sides stopped with the signing of the first phase of the trade deal in January

The Corona pandemic has raised questions about whether China can meet its obligations in the first phase, which includes the purchase of an additional $ 200 billion in US goods over a two-year period and at the weekend, US President Donald Trump said he might end the agreement if Beijing fails to meet these obligations

In a statement issued by the American Trade Representative office yesterday, he clarified that the two sides agreed during the phone call that despite the current global health emergency, both countries expect to fully fulfill their obligations under the agreement at the appointed time

According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce statement, both countries are working to implement what is described in the trade agreement

Beijing is waving a treasury bond against Washington

In response to Washington's requests to compensate it for the Corona virus, China may remove a portion of the US Treasury bonds, according to the South China Morning Post.

Analysts reached this theory after reports said the White House was considering seizing part of the bonds held by China as compensation for the Corona crisis.

Analysts likened US bonds to China with a “nuclear weapon,” as the latter possessed more than a trillion dollars in treasury bonds, and selling them could jolt the global financial markets.

Analysts say that China’s disposal of bonds makes sense, as the idea of discussing the possibility of bond confiscation by the US administration may prompt China to take measures to reduce risk.

"It is a natural reaction from Beijing that Washington is willing to confiscate US bonds owned by the Chinese government," Russia's Alexei Zubits, director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research of the Financial University of the Russian government, said in an interview with Sputnik. Of its investments in US securities after Washington began to impose sanctions on Moscow. According to the expert’s estimates, China can find bond buyers either inside or outside the United States. The expert stressed that such a step would have dire consequences for the United States, and the talk is not about high inflation, and believes that China selling part of the bonds will shake confidence in US debt instruments.

The main risk here is not inflation, but the fact that international investors will be disappointed, as US Treasury bonds are risk-free assets, and they have immunity, as they cannot be seized, and if Washington confiscates bonds in which Beijing has invested its money, Zobits said. Doing so will undermine confidence in these securities. "The Americans have recently been killing the chicken that lays eggs that are golden, and they believe that they can do without foreign investors, as they are increasingly using Treasury bonds as a political tool," the expert added.

According to data from the US Treasury Department last February, China holds US Treasury bonds worth $ 1.092 trillion, and the Chinese giant ranks second in the list of the largest holders of these bonds. Japan tops the list with investments amounting to $ 1.268 trillion, while in the third place comes the United Kingdom with investments amounting to about $ 400 billion, followed by Brazil in the fourth position ($ 285 billion).

High-risk currencies are supported by progress on
trade with China

20686.jpg

8th May, 2020

Strong currencies linked to global trade rose on Friday, supported by news of US and Chinese negotiators agreeing to boost cooperation on a trade deal as more and more governments reopen their economies at a slow pace

Senior trade representatives from the United States and China discussed the one-stage agreement between the two countries on Friday, while China said it had agreed to improve the atmosphere for implementation of the agreement and the United States said the two sides believed that commitments would be fulfilled

The phone conversation came in light of escalating tensions between the two countries, which was exacerbated by the United States 'criticism of China' s response to the outbreak of the new Corona virus

The Australian dollar, which is closely related to sentiment towards China and the global economy, rose 0.3 percent to 0.6516 US dollars, after hitting earlier a week's high. The currencies of a number of emerging markets also rose

The US dollar suffered in search of a trend as investors challenged a widespread sense of pessimism about upcoming US employment data and focused on trade news and the gradual lifting of public isolation measures. What undermined the American currency was its damaged yield again, at a time when money markets are considering a low probability of negative interest rates this year

The dollar index, which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of six major currencies, was unchanged at 99.851. The dollar’s decline against higher-risk currencies indicates a recovery in risk appetite with the rise in global stocks, and the Nasdaq index has now erased its losses incurred since the beginning of this year

In addition to significant monetary easing around the world, hopes for a return to economic conditions support sentiment. The euro fell 0.1 percent to $ 1.0823, but held close to the lowest level in two weeks, which recorded on Thursday at 1.07665, although it fell more than one percent per week. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 106.32 yen, above a seven-week low that it touched on Wednesday

Trump extends economic sanctions on Syria

144302.jpg?width=750&&height=375

7th May, 2020

US President Donald Trump decided, on Thursday, 7 May 2020, to extend unilateral economic sanctions applied to Syria for another year.

In a statement posted on the electronic database in the US Federal Register, he announced that President Donald Trump decided to extend the sanctions against Syria for another year.

The statement indicated that these sanctions are among the various restrictions imposed by Washington against Damascus, respectively, from 2012 to 2014.

These restrictions include a ban on the financial assets of some persons and legal entities subject to U.S. jurisdiction, and a ban on the export of certain categories of goods and services to Syria.

And 10 countries including Russia, China, Iran and Syria have sent an official message to the High Commissioner for Human Rights calling for immediate action to lift the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on the countries.

The message from the group of countries affected by unilateral sanctions, especially those imposed by the United States, came because of the impact of these serious sanctions on hundreds of millions of people in these countries.

The letter, signed by Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Cambodia and Nicaragua, indicated that these sanctions are a tool in the arsenal of US foreign policy in flagrant violation not only of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, but also at the expense of basic human rights, including That right to development and the right to education, health and food.

The letter states that the Corona pandemic has created a new impetus to recognize the full inhuman nature of unilateral coercive measures and their deadly effects on the affected population, and seriously undermine international cooperation to reduce the epidemic and treat patients.

The leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has announced that Tehran has the ability to define a target to place the satellite in a 36,000 km orbit.

A geosynchronous orbit is a high Earth orbit that allows satellites to match Earth's rotation. Located at 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth's equator, this position is a valuable spot for monitoring weather, communications and surveillance.

So, OK, WHERE, pray tell, is THIS geosynchronous orbiting satellite located???!!!
