China global cover-up concerns after it filed patent for drug that helps some patients recover

China filed a patent for a drug seen as one of the best potential weapons against coronavirus the day after it confirmed human transmission of the disease.

The revelation that it moved so fast fuels concerns about a cover-up of the pandemic when it erupted in Wuhan last year, and suggests that China’s understanding of the virus was far advanced from the impression given by its public stance.

Last night, Tom Tugendhat, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, joined the growing global clamour for a full, independent inquiry into China’s role.

‘It is quite clear there is an awful lot that we don’t know about the emergence of this disease and the responses to it,’ he said. ‘We all need to learn the lessons of the outbreak so the international community can respond better in the future.’

China’s Communist Party leaders face accusations that they suppressed data, blocked public health teams from investigating, silenced doctors seeking to warn the world about the epidemic and delayed admitting there was human transmission.

The contagious nature of the virus was confirmed by President Xi Jinping on January 20. Leaked documents have shown that even after officials knew they faced an epidemic, they delayed warning the public for six days.

On January 21, a patent for commercial use of Remdesivir – a drug initially created by an American pharmaceutical firm to fight ebola – was filed in China.

The application was made by Wuhan Institute of Virology, the top-secret bio-laboratory at the centre of concerns about a possible leak of the disease from its research on bats, and the country’s Military Medicine Institute.

The move was described as ‘provocative’ by one website specialising in clinical research.

Gilead, the California-based developer of the drug, says it filed its own global applications for Remdesivir’s use against coronavirus four years ago. Countries, firms and scientists around the world are collaborating in the race to find effective treatments and vaccines.

The winners will derive immense prestige – and would boost China’s narrative that its response deserves praise, not opprobrium.

Gilead said it was aware of the Chinese move but had no influence over the patent office’s decision and could not comment since precise details of the application would not be published until next year. ‘Our focus at this time is on rapidly determining the potential for Remdesivir as a treatment for Covid-19 and accelerating manufacturing in anticipation of potential future supply needs,’ a spokesman added.

The drug, hailed as ‘promising’ by US President Donald Trump after anecdotal reports that it had helped some patients, is already being given to certain coronavirus cases on compassionate grounds.

Stocks are in such short supply that it could not be included in the world’s biggest trial of possible treatments being run by Oxford University. One leading US epidemiologist said it offered ‘hope’ but ‘won’t likely be a home-run drug’. This was underlined last week by leaked results of an initial trial in China that raised concerns.

But Gilead argued this study was stopped due to low patient enrolment and said results of a major US government trial would be released next month. This study is designed to show if Remdesivir, when given to patients with a range of disease severity, improves outcomes such as length of hospital stay, need for mechanical ventilation and survival rates.

Professor Martin Landray, a leader of the Oxford study, said doctors would probably end up with a range of drugs to fight the virus, adding: ‘It is unlikely we will get a wonder drug that will knock out the infection.’

Prof Landray said drugs might be used in combinations to help reduce death rates.

He added: ‘Even if you find a drug that reduces the death rate by one fifth, that would have meant we would have been able to save about 4,000 lives already in Britain.'

The drug is made by Gilead and 2 days ago the stock market dumped because China put out a statement saying the drug didn’t work on CV.  The drug does work and China was trying to control it.

All I want to say is this

China is not a friend of the USA

China is a Communist country and will stop at nothing to defeat the West

The truth will get out about the CV and I don’t think it will end well for China.

Ignore bad information from Russia and China on the coronavirus crisis

Social media is great for keeping in touch with family and friends while we practice social distancing. It offers an easy and convenient way for people to check in with loved ones, watch movies together, and play games. But it is also a great way for states like Russia and China to drive us apart and sow chaos by pushing false information. It is important to remember that Russia and China have and continue to claim that the United States is their enemy. Their national strategies and foreign policies reflect this.

This is nothing new. The intelligence community report on interference by Russia in the 2016 election is loaded with examples. Indeed, Moscow tried to inflame racial division in the United States by pitting African Americans against law enforcement, stirred up religious animosity between Christian and Muslims, and more. Moscow found cracks in our society and sought to add more fuel to the fire. Unfortunately, it had some success.

During the late stages of the Cold War, the Soviet Union launched what is known as Operation Infektion, an active measure campaign that sought to place the blame for the AIDS epidemic on American biological weapons experiments. If you are wondering whether or not Operation Infektion was successful, there are plenty of conspiracy videos out there that echo what is, essentially, Soviet Union propaganda. With the coronavirus pandemic, Moscow is simply dusting off an old playbook during this crisis.

Outlets that back the Kremlin are pushing a host of competing narratives designed to create confusion, muddy the waters, and divide the Western alliance. This is everything from tweets suggesting that the coronavirus is no worse than the flu, to suggesting it will end civilization as we know it, and others echoing propaganda and speculating if the coronavirus is a biological weapon that was deployed by London or Washington.

Now Beijing is playing this game. China, where the coronavirus originated and where the Communist Party sought to conceal the epidemic late last year, is attempting to create an alternative narrative where it is the victim. This falsehood suggests that the coronavirus was introduced to Wuhan by members of the United States Army, which as the New York Times noted is a claim that does not have any “shred of evidence” to support.

The spokesperson for Chinese foreign ministry has pushed this conspiracy theory. The Chinese ambassador to South Africa has also suggested that the coronavirus might have originated from outside China. Ironically, both these officials spread these claims on Twitter, which is banned in China by the Communist Party. To be fair, however, the Chinese ambassador to the United States distanced himself from the claims, saying that it is “crazy” to spread such rumors and that such “speculation” does no good.

Why is China starting a disinformation campaign? The Communist Party has long been practitioners of propaganda at home and abroad, but it is trying to deflect blame for its initial improper handling of the coronavirus outbreak. The worldwide condemnation of its concealment, which slowed a global preventive response, is a threat to its image and strength. While it likely will not lead to the collapse of the Communist Party, any political or national vulnerability is clearly viewed as an existential threat.

The Communist Party is also running a soft power campaign that aims to make it the hero of this crisis. Beijing sent hundreds of doctors, nurses, masks, ventilators, and testing kits to Italy. Unsurprisingly, Italy, which is suffering from one of the worst outbreaks, welcomed the aid and praised this assistance. China sent aid to Iran, Iraq, Spain, France, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Beijing is crafting the narrative that it heroically overcame the coronavirus outbreak at home and is rewriting the story that it is the international hero coming to the aid of the countries in need.

We must not fall for these disinformation campaigns, and we cannot play into their narratives. Washington should take action to hold the Chinese foreign ministry accountable for what the spokesperson tweets and must call out Moscow for spreading its many blatant falsehoods. Hamilton 68, a program by the German Marshall Fund, is a great way to track the efforts of disinformation by Russia. Now we also need one for China.

But much like stopping the spread of the coronavirus, we all have a role in stopping the spread of disinformation. We must seek out trusted sources of information like the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. We must not share suspicious content on social media. If something sounds strange, it is probably strange for a reason.

Russia and China see the United States as a threat to their authoritarian regimes, and rightfully so. They want to sow division among us and our allies to ensure that we cannot hold them accountable. We as a country must come together to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and to stop their disinformation campaigns. Indeed, we have stopped Russia and China before, and it is time we work together and do it again.

Thanks Adam GM DV's. 1 item that always bothered me . When President Trump met with China to sign the first phase of the trade agreement . Xi was not present for the signing . Another Chinese official signed the agreement along with Trump. Sometime afterwards they announced virus . Shortly after that China comes forward and states they need to reopen the Trade Agreement in order to combat the virus. That has always bothered me . Thank You for reading .

We know that much more has been happening behind the scenes of the Covid19 Panic Pandemic. And it's widely reported on social media that many arrest have been made. It's possible that Kim's afraid he's on that list and with the help of the Chinese has come up with this cover story to provide ample time to hide.

Pity he doesn't understand the meaning of the expression, "You can run but you can't hide ". Google sees everyone.

EU officials 'watered down report on China's coronavirus fake news campaign under pressure'

The EU is accused of watering down a report on China's coronavirus disinformation campaign after Beijing pressured the bloc, according to media reports.

The New York Times and South China Morning Post say they have obtained the initial copies of a European report published on Friday which carefully documents how rogue states are pushing 'fake news' about the coronavirus pandemic.

It makes note of efforts by Xi Jingping's regime to spread false information, especially by 'deflecting' blame for the outbreak of the pandemic.

The original report spoke of a Chinese bid to 'improve its international image', and included Beijing's criticisms of France's slow response to the virus.

It even noted how Beijing promoted false accusations that French politicians had used racial slurs against the head of the World Health Organisation.

The EU is now likely to face accusations of 'appeasement' at a time of heightened international tension as Western leaders criticise Beijing.

China is accused of concealing the origins of the pandemic. It is also accused of hiding the true number of coronavirus deaths inside its borders.

Pictured: European Union flags in front of the European Commission building in Brussels

Pictured: European Union flags in front of the European Commission building in Brussels

According to The Times, the first report cited Beijing's efforts to curtail mentions of the origins of the virus in China - including blaming the US for spreading the disease.

The first report said: 'China has continued to run a global disinformation campaign to deflect blame for the outbreak of the pandemic and improve its international image. Both overt and covert tactics have been used.'

China was quick to move to block the publication of the report, which was on the verge of being released before revisions were ordered by EU officials.

In an email seen by TheTimes, Lutz Gullner, an EU diplomat, wrote: 'The Chinese are already threatening with reactions if the report comes out'.

Both the South China Morning Post and The Times report how the sentence about Chinese 'global disinformation' and the dispute with France was removed.

The original report said that EU analysts had assessed a 'continued and coordinated push by official Chinese sources to deflect any blame'.

It was softened to the rather flaccid: 'We see continued and coordinated push by some actors, including Chinese sources, to deflect any blame'.

The Post reported that EU officials feared a 'strain' in relations and increased 'difficulty' in getting medical supplies vital to the fight against Covid-19.

The Times reported claims that Esther Osorio - a communications adviser to EU Minister for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell - ordered the delay of its publication.

Osorio supposedly asked analysts to revise the report to focus less on China and Russia, in an effort to avoid charges of bias, and instead differentiate between pushing 'disinformation' and a different narrative of events.

However, at least one analyst formally objected, writing to her bosses that the EU was 'self-censoring to appease the Chinese Communist Party'.

In an email seen by The Times, Monika Richter complained: 'Such appeasement will set a terrible precedent and encourage similar coercion in the future'.

An EU spokesman told The Times that neither revisions to the report had been ordered in response to pressure from China, nor had the document been delayed.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) - founded to monitor possible disinformation from rogue states like Russia - denied editing any part of the report in response to diplomatic or political pressure to The Times.

China accuses 'biased' Australia of 'playing political games' after Scott Morrison called for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic amid claims a wet market in Wuhan was the source

By Charlie Coe and Brittany Chain for Daily Mail Australia

China has accused Australia of 'ideological bias' and playing 'political games' after Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for an independent inquiry into the spread of coronavirus.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne raised the idea of a review into how the outbreak began last week, saying she agreed with the view the respiratory disease originated from a wet market in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019.

Mr Morrison has also spoken with leaders in the US, Germany and France with the aim of giving independent health inspectors powers to investigate areas where pandemics could spark in the future.

China hit back, describing Australia's proposal as 'political manoeuvring' which undermined the world's attempts to stem the virus' spread.

An EU spokesman, told Fox News that The Times made 'ungrounded, inaccurate allegations and contains factually incorrect conclusions'. He claimed: 'The publications of the EEAS are categorically independent.

'We have never bowed to any alleged external political pressure.'

The EEAS has previously been accused of softening its language in reports about alleged Russian disinformation in an effort to improve relations with Moscow.

These reports come at an inopportune time for the EU, which hopes to restore a lucrative trading relationship with China once the pandemic has subsided.

They raise questions about whether or not the EU will sacrifice its principles - including to transparency, democracy, and liberty - for economic fortune, as Europe-wide lockdowns which began in March take an increasingly dire toll on major economies, including Germany.

It puts the EU, whose detractors accuse it of 'kowtowing' to Beijing, in the middle of a fierce diplomatic row between China and the US, as President Trump alleges that Xi Jinping and Director-General of the WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus are colluding to downplay the true figures of Covid-19 deaths in China.

The Chinese regime tried to suppress news of the viral outbreak back in January, actively providing false numbers of confirmed cases and Covid-associated deaths to the World Health Organisation. When brave whistleblowers sounded the alarm, China admitted a new disease - likely to have come from the 'wet markets' of Wuhan - had emerged.

China's critics allege the regime wasted precious time that could have been spent containing the outbreak and preventing its global spread by lying.

Instead, Beijing's most senior officials wanted to 'save face', the critics say.

President Trump said his administration was trying to figure out if the virus came from a Chinese lab. Beijing has accused the US of distracting the public.

The two countries have been at loggerheads since Mr Trump assumed the White House. In his second year as President, he declared a trade war with China.

Mr Trump has claimed that the WHO (right, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus) has gone soft on China because it is sympathetic to President Xi Jinping (left)

A truce between the rivals saved the world economy then from crashing down.

However, an enflamed row between China and the US - the world's two biggest powers - has the potential to spill out into geopolitics and security.

Already the coronavirus fallout is redrawing new contours on the world stage, as the UK Government clings tightly to the Trump administration.

Downing Street, for instance, has removed China from the list of other countries it uses to compare the spread of Covid-19. It is understood this stems from a widespread distrust of official Chinese coronavirus victim figures.

It comes days after the regime quarantined a city of 10million people in its northwest region near Russia. Yesterday, China's northwestern province of Shaanxi reported seven new imported cases coronavirus, all in citizens returning home from Russia.

Pictured: medical personnel taking swab samples of a man for nucleic acid testing as part of Covid-19 pandemic measures, at a health services centre in Suifenhe (April 24, 2020)

A second outbreak would be a setback for President Xi who is trying to restart the nation's economy and present an image of power to the rest of the world.

Beijing claims that the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in China, where the virus first emerged in late December, is now 82,816.

The death toll remained the same at 4,632, with no new deaths reported on April 24.

But there is widespread disbelief at those figures from Western leaders who are accusing the regime of letting coronavirus spread while its leaders 'saved face'.

The Chinese Government has shut down gyms and swimming pools in Beijing as fears that the country is vulnerable to 'second wave' mount.

The people of Wuhan believe the death toll in their city that was the epicentre of the outbreak is 42,000 - not the 3,182 claimed by China.

Did anyone have problems getting TP and paper towels, hand sanitizer, or any cleaning products over the last 2 months.  We’ll brace yourself if you are a meat eater.  I just read where there will be meat shortages in the US in as little as 3 weeks.  It appears some of our major meat processing plants will be or are all ready closed due to CV.  3 of the biggest plants are owned by the Chinese.   When this word gets out eat products will be snapped up just like TP.  This is complete nonesense.  Some people are driving us to panic, fear, and the brink civil disobedience imo.

Good morning all!

On my drive this morning I was letting some ideas bounce around in my head and I keep coming back to the idea of a "conspiracy theory" section here on Dinarvets.

One of the major topics in the world right now is COVID, or CoronaVirus. The 'Rona was originally labeled as a Chinese virus, then it was "bad taste" or "politically incorrect" to label it "Chinese", but if it started in Wuhan (China), then by God the name fits! Damn your PC bologna all to heck and back. ;)

There are theories about it's origin, which range all over the place, but a couple of common dialogues include 1: Eating bats and 2: Irresponsible laboratory testing.

We can also consider biological warfare, act of terrorism, Act of God, and others, but this particular "theory" is based on the idea that Corona was introduced intentionally, by China, for some kind of gain.

If it came from China, there are a couple of possibilities that immediately come to mind given the rest of the global news - I'm focused on China right now.

1. Oil. Coronavirus led to a global lockdown, which killed demand for oil, crashing the price of oil, leading to the current concerns of "where do we store all this stuff"? The price of oil is heavily influenced at this point by extreme surplus - no matter how cheap it is, we don't have anywhere to put it!

2. Technology. You should all recall a couple of items from the news recently - Huawei, facial recognition, privacy concerns. Huawei was banned in the US last year amid espionage and privacy concerns and accusations. The situation undoubtedly cost the company a lot of money, and if China had any plans of using the sneaky technology as a backdoor to spy on all of us, those plans undoubtedly suffered a setback.

Another topic that came and went is "facial recognition", and the privacy concerns that carries. I first heard about it in some stories like this, with the major point being that the Chinese government had implemented it. Some stories closer to home include Facebook and Clearview... these examples were mostly 2019, and the progress on that front seemed to be mostly slowed, if not stopped.

:tiphat:

Thanks for your analysis Adam...! :salute: Ron
