Coronavirus cases 'will surge in their thousands by NEXT WEEK' and three 'critical' weeks were lost in containing the spread because CDC tests failed

  • Dr Matt McCarthy, who works at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, says coronavirus cases will surge into the thousands by next week
  • He also claims he doesn't have the tools to properly care for patients because of the lack of coronavirus tests being made available to hospitals
  • Health officials have been scrambling to get their own coronavirus testing kits up and running after getting stuck with faulty tests from the federal government
  • Scott Gottlieb, who is the former FDA commissioner said three critical weeks were lost in trying to contain the spread of coronavirus in the U.S. because of the faulty tests
  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services confirmed on Sunday that it is investigating a manufacturing defect in some initial coronavirus test kits
  • It comes as New York Gov Andrew Cuomo confirmed on Sunday that a healthcare worker in her 30s was the first confirmed case in the state
  • The total number of U.S. cases has now soared to 91 as authorities confirmed that the first two people had died in Washington state after contracting coronavirus

A New York doctor has warned coronavirus cases in the United States will surge into the thousands by next week as the former head of the FDA claimed three critical weeks were lost in containing the spread of the virus due to faulty test kits given out by the government.

Health officials have been scrambling to get their own coronavirus testing kits up and running after getting stuck with faulty tests from the federal government that they said left them unable to diagnose people quickly.

State and local authorities are now also stepping up testing for the illness as the number of new cases grew to 91 across the U.S. on Monday, with new infections announced in California, Florida, Illinois, Rhode Island, New York and Washington state.

New York confirmed its first coronavirus case on Sunday as a female healthcare worker in her 30s who returned from Iran last week and is now being quarantined in her Manhattan home.

FDA vows to test one million people by end of next week as death toll hits six, more than 100 cases are confirmed across 12 states - and at least a quarter of these were transmitted through communities NOT travel

  • The coronavirus death toll in the US rose to six on Monday and there are now more than 100 confirmed cases across 12 states
  • Roughly a quarter of the cases in the US have likely been transmitted through local communities and are not travel-related, according to health officials
  • Despite this, the first cases detected in both Georgia and New Hampshire on Monday have been linked to travel in Italy
  • Five of the six deaths - all of which occurred in Washington state - have been linked to a Seattle senior living facility
  • State and local authorities have been stepping up testing for the illness following a debacle with faulty kits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Officials expect more than one million people to be tested within the next week

Health officials believe a quarter of the current coronavirus cases in the United States were transferred through US communities rather than travel and have vowed to test a million people by the end of the week.

An increase in testing for the coronavirus began shedding light on Monday on how the illness has spread in the United States with the death toll rising to six and newly confirmed cases pushing the tally to more than 100 across 12 states.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has said he expects community-related cases to grow in the coming weeks.

'My concern is as the next week or two or three go by, we're going to see a lot more community-related cases,' he said. 'That's of great concern.'

Coronavirus-driven fear of air travel has a '9/11-like feel', says Southwest Airlines CEO as firm warns of a $300m drop in revenues amid 'precipitous decline' in bookings

  • Gary Kelly said 'hopefully we'll get this behind us very quickly' as stocks fell 3%
  • Southwest along with its heavyweight rivals are losing ticket sales rapidly
  • Kelly said like 9/11, 'fear' was manifesting itself and impacting the market badly
  • Total number infected by COVID-19 rose to 238 today, including 12 deaths

The coronavirus-driven fear of air travel has a '9/11-like feel,' the CEO of Southwest Airlines said on Thursday as he anticipated a $300million drop in first-quarter revenues.

Shares of Southwest fell 3%, while those of bigger rivals fell more. American Airlines Group Inc fell more than 11%, United Airlines Holdings Inc was down 10% and Delta Air fell 7%.

CEO Gary Kelly told CNBC: '9/11 wasn't an economically driven issue for travel. It was more fear, quite frankly, and I think that that's really what's manifested this time.'

He added that some of the lost bookings would be from personal bookings while others could be because companies do not want their workers travelling.

Jim Bakker claims his Silver Solution can 'cure coronavirus'

Bakker - an ardent Trump supporter - asks guest Sherill Sellman if the solution will work against the virus, to which she responds: 'Let's say it hasn't been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it's been rested on other strains of the coronavirus and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours'.

Landau said that the discussion and adverts for the solution 'may mislead consumers as to the effectiveness of the Silver Solution product in protecting against the current outbreak'.

'The World Heath Organization ('WHO') has noted that there is no specific medicine to prevent or treat this disease,' Landau continued.

'Therefore, any representation on the Jim Bakker Show that its Silver Solution products are effective at combating and/or treating the 2019 novel coronavirus violates New York law.

Coronavirus latest: How the global health scare is impacting sports

https://sports.yahoo.com/coronavirus-latest-how-the-global-health-scare-is-impacting-sports-231135518.html

Johns Hopkins bans fans

Meanwhile Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore announced on Thursday that the Division III basketball games it’s scheduled to host on Friday and Saturday will be played in an empty arena, the first known case of fans being barred from a sporting event in the United States.

Stanford establishes crowd limits

Stanford University has established its own protocol for home sporting events with a plan to reduce crowds. The school announced on Thursday that it plans to limit crowds to around 1/3 of capacity at 10 of its host venues as a precautionary measure “to allow fans the opportunity for social distancing.”

Italy bars fans from sporting events

Italy is one of the world’s hardest-hit countries, with 3,858 cases and 148 deaths as of Friday, according to CNN. In turn, the nation is implementing one of the most drastic strategies to combat the spread of the coronavirus, banning fans from all sporting events in the country until at least April 3.

The Italian government made the announcement on March 4 alongside a decision to close all of the nation’s schools and universities until March 15.

Among other events, the decision will impact games in Serie A, the nation’s top soccer league that features teams like Inter Milan and Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo’s club. Serie A games were initially postponed before the decision to play resume play in front of empty stadiums.

The Six Nations men’s and women’s rugby matches scheduled for March in Rome will also be played without fans present. It is an an international event that would normally draw thousands of fans from other countries.

The coronavirus scare also threatened to halt a number of cycling events scheduled in Italy.

Can you say Economic Disaster?

More than 102,000 people in 88 countries have been infected with novel coronavirus amid an outbreak that has sent countries and states scrambling to respond.

At least 3,491 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University, with the majority of those in China, where the virus was first detected in Wuhan in December.

The number of Americans diagnosed with the novel coronavirus is now at least 234, with at least 17 dead, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Friday.

The states reporting cases are Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

Here is how the situation is unfolding on Saturday (all times eastern). Please refresh for updates.

A U.S. Navy sailor stationed at the Naval support Activity Naples tested positive for novel coronavirus, marking the first positive cause of a U.S. service member in Europe, according to a statement from U.S. European Command Theater.

The service member is in isolation at their residence and receiving medical care in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the statement read. Anyone who had close contact with the patient has been notified and is in self-isolation at their residence.

Their condition was not immediate clear.

8:50 a.m. 14 Americans under quarantine in Bethlehem hotel

The Palestinian health ministry in Bethlehem confirmed that 14 American citizens are being tested for coronavirus and have been quarantined in the Angles hotel in the city of Bethlehem for now. Those American citizens were trying to leave the city yesterday but were sent back to Bethlehem by the Israeli army, according to the Palestinian health ministry. People are not permitted to leave or enter Bethlehem, as per a decision made by Israeli and Palestinian authorities after 17 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the city in the last 48 hours.

8:43 a.m. Houston-area church warns of possible exposure

A person who tested positive for coronavirus attended the 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday service on Feb. 26 at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church, according to Harris County Public officials in Texas. The individual received ashes and had communion in the hand, but did not receive communion from the cup, officials said. The person sat in the last pew on the left side of the church.

Officials are asking anyone who sat in the last three rows on the left side of the church during that service to contact Harris Couty Public officials at 713-439-6000.

In the meantime, St. Cecilia has drained and sanitized the baptismal fonts and sanitized the church's pews, door handles and restrooms and will provide hand sanitizers at all the church's entrances. Parishioners are being urged to stay home if they are feeling unwell, according to a statement from the church.

7:43 a.m. Pope cancels Sunday prayers

The Holy See press office just released the following statement (translated from Italian):

"With regard to the events of the coming days, the prayer of the Angelus of the Holy Father on Sunday 8 March will take place from the Library of the Apostolic Palace and not in the square, from the window. The prayer will be streamed live by Vatican News and on screens in St. Peter's Square and distributed by Vatican Media to the media who will request it, so as to allow the participation of the faithful. The General Audience on Wednesday, March 11 will be held in the same manner. These choices are necessary in order to avoid the risk of diffusion of the COVID-19 due to the gathering during the security controls for access to the square, as also requested by the Italian authorities. In compliance with the provisions of the Health and Hygiene Directorate of the Vatican City State, the participation of the faithful guests in the Masses in Santa Marta will be suspended until Sunday 15 March. The Holy Father will celebrate the Eucharist privately."

The NBA, according to ESPN, sent a memo to teams telling them to prepare to play in front of empty arenas in the near future.

The memo, obtained by ESPN and ABC New York affiliate WABC, said NBA teams were asked to develop a process and identify actions required if they had to play games without fans in attendance and with only essential staff at the arena.

"I ain't playing. If I ain't got the fans in the crowd, that's what I play for. I play for my teammates, I play for the fans,” James told reporters in the locker room following the game. “That's what it's all about. If I show up to an arena, and there ain't no fans there? I ain't playing. So, they could do what they want to do.”

Previously Friday, the popular technology/culture/music festival SXSW in Austin, Texas, was canceled because of the coronavirus.

"We are devastated to share this news with you. 'The show must go on' is in our DNA and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place," the event said in a statement Friday.

Many schools and universities are going remote or canceling classes.

The University of Southern California and Stanford University both moved all classes online in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Stanford announced Friday that all classes would be moved online for the final two weeks of the quarter and USC said it is going to test remote classes for two days next week.

“Our university must be nimble and flexible in the event that we need to make any further changes to the semester,” Charles F. Zukoski, USC Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, said in a statement Friday. “We have about 7,000 lecture classes this spring. We need to test our technical capabilities to ensure academic continuity in an online environment should there be a disruption.”

The West Coast, particularly around the Seattle region, has been hit hard by COVID-19. Of the 17 coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S., 14 are from the state of Washington. The other West Coast death was in California.

Globally at least 95,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed with at least 3,200 deaths reported, most of which are in China, according to the WHO

Americans divided on party lines over risk from coronavirus: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans who now find themselves politically divided over seemingly everything are now forming two very different views of another major issue: the dangers of the new coronavirus.

Democrats are about twice as likely as Republicans to say the coronavirus poses an imminent threat to the United States, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted this week.

And more Democrats than Republicans say they are taking steps to be prepared, including washing their hands more often or limiting their travel plans.

Poll respondents who described themselves as Republicans and did not see the coronavirus as a threat said it still felt remote because cases had not been detected close to home and their friends and neighbors did not seem to be worried, either.

“I haven’t changed a single thing,” Cindi Hogue, who lives outside Little Rock, Arkansas, told Reuters. “It’s not a reality to me yet. It hasn’t become a threat enough yet in my world.”

Many of the U.S. cases that have been reported so far have been in Washington state and California, more than 1,000 miles away from Arkansas.

Politics was not a factor in her view of the seriousness of the virus, Hogue said. Other Republican respondents interviewed echoed that sentiment.

But the political divide is nonetheless significant: About four of every 10 Democrats said they thought the new coronavirus poses an imminent threat, compared to about two of every 10 Republicans.

Part of the explanation, said Robert Talisse, a Vanderbilt University philosophy professor who studies political polarization, is that political divisiveness often works in subtle ways.

Americans increasingly surround themselves with people who share the same political views, so partisan perceptions echo not just through the television channels people watch and websites and social media they consume, but through their friends and neighbors, too.

"This partisan-sort stuff is real; it just doesn’t feel like that’s what’s going on because our partisan selves just feel like ourselves,” Talisse said.

A `FALSE NUMBER'

Americans, who often consume news based on their political preferences, have received two different views of the virus's potential impact.

Amid tumbling stock markets, President Donald Trump has sought to portray himself as on top of the health crisis, but he has been criticized for being overly optimistic about its potential impact and for sometimes incorrect statements on the science of the virus.

Trump has accused the media and his political adversaries of trying to derail his re-election campaign by amping up alarm over the dangers posed by the virus. He has largely sought to cast it as a comparatively minor threat, comparing its risk to the less deadly seasonal flu.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners last week that, “The coronavirus is the common cold” and was merely being “weaponized as yet another element to bring down Donald Trump.”

Trump told Sean Hannity's Fox News show on Wednesday that he thought World Health Organization estimates of the virus' death rate were a "false number," that he had a hunch the rate was much lower, "a fraction of 1 percent." The WHO said this week that the coronavirus killed about 3.4% of the people who contracted it worldwide.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused Trump on Thursday of spreading misinformation about coronavirus' death rate, saying the "reality is in the public domain."

The outbreak has killed more than 3,400 people and spread across more than 90 nations. Eleven people in the United States have died from the coronavirus, the CDC said Friday.

National media and other cable news channels have been filled with accounts of a spreading sickness and the U.S. deaths. Public health authorities have sent increasingly urgent warnings about the need to be ready for quarantines and school closures.

Exactly how big a role these divergent messages have driven Americans’ perception of the danger they face is difficult to measure, but experts said they could only fuel the political divisions that are so vast that they long ago started having an impact on everything from how Americans vote to where they buy coffee.

“Our hyper-polarization is so strong that we don’t even assess a potential health crisis in the same way. And so it impedes our ability to address it," said Jennifer McCoy, a Georgia State political science professor who studies polarization.

About half of Democrats said they are washing their hands more often now because of the virus, compared to about four in 10 Republicans, according to the poll. About 8% of Democrats said they had changed their travel plans, compared to about 3% of Republicans.

More than half of Republicans, about 54%, said they had not altered their daily routines because of the virus, compared to about 40% of Democrats.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, from March 2-3 in the United States. It gathered responses from 1,115 American adults, including 527 Democrats and 396 Republicans. The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of about 3 percentage points.

"Speaking of overreactions," Maher said as he segued from a discussion about the sudden retirement of MSNBC's Chris Matthews, "I'm over this virus. I haven't had it. What I'm saying is, I'm sick. I don't mean that, either. I'm sick of the virus -- but not from the virus. At this point, I just f---ing want to get it so we don't have to talk about it or worry about touching my face anymore."

He continued, "The way they talk about it on the news ... They make it sound like if you're within six feet of anyone who has it, just get your affairs in order."

One of Maher's guests, New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, pushed back.

"It's bad," Douthat said, specifically mentioning the U.S. government's response to the outbreak.

"I'm just talking about the disease itself," Maher responded. "It could be something really, really virulent, but as I said last week at the top of the show with our expert, the response is to have a good immune system. And it's really the only response."

The HBO star then listed off statistics of "the regular flu" and how 517 people were killed from it "this season" in California.

"If that was on TV every day, I'd assume we'd be freaking out," he said, adding later that "61,000" people were killed by the flu last year.

"People die! That's what happens in life!" Maher told the panel. "I hate when Trump talks like the guy at the end of the bar, which is what he does. So when he says, 'I have a hunch...' I know what he means because Y2K was going to end the world and the fires in Kuwait were going to end the world and the BP oil spill was going to end the world, and every other f---ing flu we've ever had. And it didn't!"

*****/END OF THE ARTICLE\*****

You have to admit, the Coronavirus looks like like another strain of the Flu, but has not come anywhere close to the number of infected or killed by the Flu. There seems to be quite a bit of HYPE right now...just not sure if it is All justified with the facts of the situation.

How Coronavirus Is Affecting Entertainment: All the Major Delays and Cancellations

The coronavirus pandemic continues to escalate, with the death toll now topping 3,000 and as many as 90,000 confirmed cases of the disease. In addition to the human toll, the spread of coronavirus has blunted global economic activity significantly. The Dow experienced its worst week since the 2008 recession and workers continue to weigh the risks of commuting and public interface.

The entertainment industry has been one of those most impacted by the virus. Hollywood executives have begun to take precautions for the sake of public health, while also forming strategies as to how to minimize economic losses at a time when public gatherings may endanger large numbers of people. Organizers of industry conferences, press tours and film festivals are evaluating options for delaying or canceling upcoming events. Abroad, China and Italy, two countries with the highest numbers of contagion, have temporarily closed movie theaters. Movie premiere dates like “No Time to Die” have been pushed back and production for films and shows including “The Amazing Race” and “Mission: Impossible 7” have been impacted by the crisis.

More from Variety

See a list of cancellations, delays and more below, which will be updated as more are announced.

Movie Premiere Dates:

Paramount delayed the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog” in China, which was set to debut on Feb. 28. Cinemas in China are indefinitely closed due to coronavirus. In a statement announcing the cancellation, the studio said, “Sonic will only be slowing down his pace temporarily, and we look forward to bringing him zooming onto the big screen in China once it is appropriate to do so.”

The next James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” was originally supposed to be released internationally on April 2 and in the U.S. on April 10, but is now being postponed until November. The film will be released in the U.K. on Nov. 12 and in the U.S. on Nov. 25. Other worldwide release dates are still to follow.

The Chinese release date for “Mulan” has been delayed indefinitely. The highly anticipated film is still set to be released on March 27 in the United States.

Production:

CBS temporarily shut down production of “The Amazing Race” Season 33. The unscripted series was only a couple of weeks into production with three episodes filmed thus far. Season 32, the next installment to air, has already been completed, though no premiere date has yet been released.

Paramount Pictures delayed its plan for a three-week shoot of Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible 7” in Venice, Italy. In a statement, the studio said, “During this hiatus we want to be mindful of the concerns of the crew and are allowing them to return home until production starts. We will continue to monitor this situation, and work alongside health and government officials as it evolves.”

“The Bachelorette” producers have canceled the upcoming season’s trip to Italy. Producers will have to find a new destination for Season 16’s travel episodes.

Music Festivals/Concert Tours:

BTS canceled its “Map of the Soul” tour shows in Korea. The concert dates scheduled for April 11, 12, 18 and 19 at Seoul’s Jamsil Olympic Stadium have been called off. Ticket buyers were automatically refunded the price of their purchase. The Seoul performances were originally scheduled to be the opening shows of the world tour, but with the cancellation, BTS’ first date will likely be April 25.

Mariah Carey announced on Twitter she was rescheduling a March 10 concert in Hawaii due to the “evolving international travel restrictions” caused by the coronavirus. She has moved the Honolulu concert stop to Nov. 28.

Miami’s Ultra Music Festival that was scheduled for March 20-22 has reportedly been postponed. This could be the first time in 21 years that the three-day electronic music festival will not be happening. The event was set to feature performances from Flume, Zedd, Sofi Tukker, Gryffin and more.

Khalid postponed his Asian tour dates. Khalid was set to perform in Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Seoul, Mumbai and Bangalore between March 24 and April 15.

Avril Lavigne was supposed to begin the Asian leg of her “Head Above Water” world tour in Shenzhen, China, on April 23, but the Canadian singer announced that it would not be happening. “You’re in my thoughts and prayers,” Lavigne said on Instagram. “We are hoping to announce rescheduled shows soon.”

Green Day canceled its tour dates scheduled in Asia. The band’s “Hella Mega” tour would have taken them throughout the continent, starting in Singapore and stopping in Bangkok, Manila, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Osaka and Tokyo. The group also noted that it would announce new dates “very soon.”

Industry Events, Markets and Festivals:

Google canceled its biggest annual event, I/O, which was set to run in View, Calif., from May 12-14. Last year’s conference featured keynotes, panel discussions and a first look at Google’s latest developer products and platforms. I/O has been held each year since 2008.

Facebook’s F8 developers conference is no longer taking place on May 5-6. Facebook is planning “other ways for our community to get together through a combo of locally hosted events, videos and live streamed content” in place of the in-person event. More details are pending.

The Cannes Film Festival is monitoring the developments and the latest guidelines regarding coronavirus after news broke of Cannes’ first case. The festival has not been canceled as of yet and is still set to take place in May.

MipTV, France’s TV market in Cannes, has been canceled and postponed its third annual drama sidebar, Canneseries. The cancellation also covers offshoot events MipDoc and MipFormats, which take place the weekend before the market. Canneseries will now run alongside Mipcom (Oct. 12-15), running from Oct. 9-14. Organizers have said MipTV will return next April, alongside a fourth edition of Canneseries.

Hong Kong FilMart, Asia’s largest film and TV trade fair, postponed its scheduled date in March to a new slot in August. The market will be cut from four days to three, and be held Aug. 27-29.

Amazon Studios, Netflix and Apple have all pulled out of their SXSW plans. The two screenings and panels Amazon Studios planned for “Tales of the Loop” and “Upload,” in addition to a consumer marketing activation, have been canceled as well as Netflix’s five film screenings and its panel for #BlackExcellence. Apple was set to premiere three new Apple TV Plus originals, including Spike Jonze’s documentary film “Beastie Boys Story” and was scheduled to host a discussion of Apple’s “Little America’ with the docuseries’ writers.
