Iraqi PM-Designate Relinquishes His British Citizenship

ERBIL  Iraq’s Prime Minister-Designate Mohammed Allawi has submitted an official request to the British Embassy in Baghdad to relinquish his British citizenship.

“Following my assumption as the Prime Minister of Iraq, I’m giving up my citizenship of any foreign country,” Allawi said in an official message to the UK ambassador to Iraq.

According to Iraq’s Constitution, individuals serving at top positions should hold no foreign citizenships.

Allawi was due to receive parliament’s vote of confidence for his cabinet last Thursday. However, as political disputes remain unsolved, the legislature postponed the vote for Saturday, which was later, once again, requested by the PM-designate to be put off for Sunday.
