WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence officials told lawmakers last week that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election campaign by aiming to cast doubt on the integrity of the vote and boost President Donald Trump's re-election, a person familiar with the briefing said on Thursday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the matter's sensitivity, said Trump's Republican allies on the Democratic-led House Intelligence Committee questioned the assessment presented by officials of the Office of National Intelligence last Thursday.

"The Republicans responded as you would expect. They went nuts," said the person. "They questioned the intelligence."

The briefers warned the committee in the classified briefing that Russia was working to cast doubt on the integrity of the Nov. 3 vote while at the same time boosting Trump's election to a second four-year term.

"They (the Russians) are favouring one candidate while they do it," said the person, adding that the briefers identified that candidate as Trump. The source declined to elaborate.

There was no immediate response to a request for comment from committee Republicans.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that a day after the briefing, Trump rebuked acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire for allowing his staff to appear before the committee. It quoted five people familiar with the matter.

Trump said on Wednesday he was replacing Maguire on an acting basis with Richard Grenell, a strong Trump loyalist who has served as ambassador to Germany since 2018.

The Times said that in reprimanding Maguire, Trump cited the presence in the briefing of Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, the intelligence panel chairman. He led the House impeachment proceedings against Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress stemming from the president's dealings with Ukraine.

The Republican-controlled Senate acquitted Trump of the charges last month.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Washington Post reported that Trump rebuked Maguire in an Oval Office meeting after a Republican ally informed the president of the election security briefing.

Shelby Pierson, a Maguire lieutenant who oversees election security, led last week's briefing for the House committee, according to the Times.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

U.S. officials have long warned that Russia and other countries would try to interfere in the 2020 U.S. presidential election campaign.

The U.S. intelligence community concluded that Russia used fake news, cyber attacks and other methods in an operation designed to swing the 2016 presidential election to Trump over Democrat Hillarious Clinton.

Russia denies the allegation.

Trump has repeatedly questioned the finding. At a 2018 summit, he said he found Russian President Vladimir Putin's denials of Russian meddling "extremely strong and powerful."

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded in a report last year that there was no conclusive evidence of coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign. Mueller was unable, however, to clear Trump of obstructing his investigation.

Trump's intelligence shakeup is reportedly tied to his loathing for Adam Schiff, bond with Devin Nunes

President Trump berated outgoing acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire on Valentine's Day because he was upset over an election security intelligence briefing for the House Intelligence Committee on Feb. 13, several major newspapers reported late Thursday. Trump was reportedly angry that Shelby Pierson, the election threat czar at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, had briefed lawmakers without his knowledge, and also that she had told them Russia is currently interfering in the 2020 election with the goal of helping Trump win re-election.

Specifically, Trump was furious that Pierson had briefed House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), The Washington Post reports. "Trump erroneously believed that Pierson had given the assessment exclusively" to Schiff, and he "also believed that the information would be helpful to Democrats if it were released publicly." It isn't clear where Trump got the impression Schiff was the only person at the bipartisan briefing, but "Trump learned about Pierson's remarks from Rep. Devin Nunes (Calif.), the committee's ranking Republican and a staunch Trump ally," the Post reports. Nunes was at the briefing.

Trump has "fixated on" Schiff, "pummeling him publicly with insults and unfounded accusations of corruption," since Schiff started leading Trump's impeachment, The New York Times reports. In October, Trump even "refused to invite lawmakers from the congressional intelligence committees to a White House briefing on Syria because he did not want Mr. Schiff there."

Accounts differ on how much the election interference briefing weighed on Trump's decision to replace Maguire with Richard Grenell, a loyalist who is currently U.S. ambassador to Germany — the Post says the incident "ruined Maguire's chances of becoming the permanent intelligence chief," while two administration officials tell the Times the timing was coincidental and Maguire was never a contender — but "Trump's suspicions of the intelligence community have often been fueled by Nunes, who was with the president in California on Wednesday when he announced on Twitter that Grenell would become the acting director," the Post reports.

Some of Maguire's top aides are leaving, too, including acting deputy DNI Andrew Hallman, the Times reports, paving the way for "Grenell to put in place his own management team." Kash Patel, the Nunes aide "who helmed efforts to push back against the FBI's Trump-Russia investigation, has just started working in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence," The Daily Beast reports.

Former CIA Director John Brennan says 'we are now in a full-blown national security crisis'

Former CIA Director John Brennan is very disturbed by a new report from The New York Times, which says last week, members of the House Intelligence Committee were warned by an aide to Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire that Russia is actively meddling in the 2020 campaign in order to get President Trump re-elected.

"We are now in a full-blown national security crisis," Brennan said. "By trying to prevent the flow of intelligence to Congress, Trump is abetting a Russian covert operation to keep him in office for Moscow's interests, not America's." Brennan served as CIA director from 2013 to 2017.

The briefing was delivered by Shelby Pierson, one of Maguire's aides known for her blunt delivery, the Times reports. When Trump found out about the briefing, he was livid, and complained that the committee's chair, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), will "weaponize" the intelligence against him, a person with knowledge of the matter told the Times. On Wednesday, Trump announced Maguire is being replaced by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, a Trump loyalist.

Same Brennan that lied under oath that he did not know about the Steel Dosier 4 months before. He was the one that went to Harry Reid about it in August of 16, Reid then wrote a letter to the FBI about it. They then started the investigation.

They should all be in jail for lying under oath.

I knew it would be just a matter of time before one of you had to post this. Let’s see, Steele dossier says President Trump colluded with Russia on election, when we know it was Hillarious and obummer the whole time colluding with Russia, along with Biden in Ukraine. It has all been connected. Mueller investigation launched and they find no evidence of collusion. Now this comes up again? Give me a freakin break. Russia collusion 2.0 is all pure BS! Think about it. President Trump has actually been harder on them than the last administration and it would benefit the Russians to having a demonrat in office. Remember when obummer said, ‘tell Vladimir that I will be able to do more after the election’ or something to that effect. So why wouldn’t they come out and say that now, hoping it would cause President Trump rift in his re-election run. I see this as nothing more than  Russian/demonrat propaganda at its finest.

So you don't believe our U.S. intelligence agencies then?  If that's the case....after the 3 year Trump purge of our intelligence communities and subsequent placement of Trump loyalists, what happens the first time they again report Russian interference?  Trump fires that person and hires another one, and the cycle continues until he finally finds the ones who won't tell the truth if it cast a negative light on Donald?  Come on man....How many times do these agencies have to tell the tale before Trump's base finally believes them?  Donald has been a con man his entire life, and Putin is a highly trained former KGB officer...who do you honestly think is running the show?

Well I sure as hell do not think Putin is running things here in this country and only a real moron would think that. In the last 10 years, look at who has benefited the most from Russia and it former territories. How about Hillarious and the uranium one scandal, the Biden scandal just to name two. We dig deeper and I am sure we will find more. What party aligns itself closely to their ideology? Lets look again, who is leading the demonrat field now? The one that spent his honeymoon at the kremlin and is a proclaimed “socialist”, ie communist. I am sure the Russians would love to work with Bernie if he were elected. It is time you wake up! I have never trusted the USSR or the new “Russia” when the USSR broke up. To me, they are still the same and I sure as hell do not believe President Trump is Putin’s puppet as you seem to suggest. I would fire some of the intel people too. In fact, if I had anyone in my agencies that were an obummer hold over, I would fire them right NOW! Every single one of them. Like I said earlier, this is nothing more than demonrat propaganda.

Uh-huh, okay.....Who has turned the EU on it's head to the great delight of Russia....Who believes OUR ally Ukraine is corrupt and intervened in our election rather than Russia, to the delight of Russia.....Who pulled out of Syria leaving Assad to his whims, to the delight of Russia...    moron, you say?
