WASHINGTON – Army Sec. Ryan McCarthy said Friday that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the former National Security Council staffer who testified in President Donald Trump's impeachment inquiry, is not under investigation, a stance seemingly at odds with the White House.

Trump directed his wrath at Vindman after the Ukraine expert testified before Congress about concerns with Trump's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. That conversation triggered Trump's impeachment.

Last week, Trump tweeted that he had ousted Vindman, whom he described as "insubordinate." On Tuesday, Trump continued to rail against Vindman, saying that he "did a lot of bad things" and that the military would review his performance.

That does not appear to be the case, according to McCarthy, the Army's senior civilian official.

"There is no investigation into him," McCarthy said.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a Ukraine expert for the National Security Council, testifies on Nov. 19, 2019, before the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a Ukraine expert for the National Security Council, testifies on Nov. 19, 2019, before the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

McCarthy told an audience at the National Press Club Friday that Vindman will complete an interim assignment before he enrolls at a senior service war college. The military sends its promising officers to schools such as the Army's War College to prepare them for promotion to more senior posts.

Vindman's interim job will be in the Washington, D.C.-area, according to a Defense Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly about personnel matters.

Vindman, along with other White House staffers, listened to Trump’s July 25 call with Zelensky. Vindman reported his concerns to the council's top lawyer about Trump demanding investigations of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

“I did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen, and I was worried about the implications for the U.S. government’s support of Ukraine,” Vindman said. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where the gain would be for the president in investigating the son of a political opponent."

After his acquittal in the Senate, Trump fired Vindman and his twin brother Yevgeny, another Army officer on the national security staff. He also fired the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, who also had testified in the impeachment inquiry.

To be clear, Vindman wasn't fired.....he was reassigned...and because he worked at the "pleasure of the President"........Trump had every right to make the change....    CL

Well, fired from the White House, lets say.....Anyhoo, I'm just glad Trump's unfounded claim of "insubordination" against career soldier, Ltc. Vindman, for doing his job professionally and ethically, isn't going to effect his ability to move forward in his career.  :salute:

Not defending Trump......just stating the facts.....Trump was elected to be the leader of the free world,  against all odds.........Vindman worked for his Administration.....and let his political bias get the better of him.  Simple as that.

Spot on CL. At the very least he should get an Article 15 for not following the proper chain. I promise if he was a Battalion Commander and one of his subordinates did not follow the proper chain of command like he did, he would become unglued and punish him for that action.

We'll simply have to agree to disagree on this, CL.....as I believe you have it twisted, for Trump was the one using his political bias for personal gain....LTC Vindman simply identified it, flagged it, and passed it along, as was his NSC job.  Not to worry though, Donald is thinking about shutting down the listening in of his phone calls completely.....while maintaining the most transparent administration in history, mind you.

Yes perhaps we we will have to leave it there... I don't believe Trump was using  political bias" for personal gain......he saw corruption.... and it happened to be Biden Jr....

Convienent?.....yes....was he with in his rights as the top law enforcement agent in the US to expose that corruption?...yes

Vindmans a whole nother story!

Transparentcy?.....no President has ever been as scrutinized as Trump has been in his first 3 years........1.6 million pages alone in the Mueller report.

Time for the Government to quit playing games... let the election decide where the country is headed.   JMO

Old news.......Kelly talks not obeying illegal orders.....isn't relevant here.....Vindman spoke up.....great....but he didn't use the proper chain of command......official compilation of the call was made available .....4 CIA operatives wrote it and agreed to its accuracy.......Vindman was not fired....just reassigned.....Vindmans political leanings are well documented.....

Vindman was one of many tools the left has tried to use to unseat Trump....all have failed.....and the left would be better off spending thier time trying to win the next election if they really want to oust Trump.....and what to they offer their base......Biden.....

Box of Rocks......."just the facts"......and who really cares what Kelly thinks.....he has an axe to grind.....     CL
