On Thursday, the US embassy in Baghdad condemned what it described as a "brutal attack" against demonstrators in Najaf province, calling on the Iraqi government to put an end to what it called "bullying", while urging the demonstrators to keep their demonstrations peaceful.

The embassy said in a statement, Alsumaria News received a copy of it, that it "strongly condemns the brutal attack that took place in the city of Najaf yesterday, Wednesday, which led to the killing and wounding of a number of peaceful demonstrators, it is regrettable that armed groups are still allowed to violate the rule of law in Iraq with impunity. Punishment against peaceful citizens who exercise their democratic right to freedom of expression, including their demands for political and economic reform. "

She added, "It is the responsibility of the Iraqi government and its security forces to put an end to this bullying, which includes the kidnapping and assassination of civil activists and journalists, as well as the beating and use of live ammunition and burning tents in peaceful demonstrations, calling on the Iraqi government to" put an end to these criminal practices and bring the perpetrators to justice. "

The embassy concluded its statement by saying: "We salute the peaceful demonstrators for their commitment to restraint in the face of these deadly tactics, and we urge them to maintain the peacefulness of their demonstrations, just as the United States fully supports their basic democratic right to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression."

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo expressed the United States' anger at the violence that took place in the city of Najaf on Wednesday, February 5, that killed and wounded peaceful protesters.

On Wednesday, Sadr's militia killed 7 protesters while breaking up their sit-ins in Najaf, southern Iraq.

Pompeo said in a statement that since October last year, peaceful demonstrators took to the streets to demand government reform and were met with threats, brutal violence and live fire attacks.

And he added that it is unreasonable for the perpetrators of these acts to continue to go unpunished.

Pompeo called in the context to hold political figures inciting violence and government leaders who are not taking steps to protect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly accountable, killing more than 600 protesters and wounding thousands so far.

Pompeo urged the Iraqi government to take immediate steps to hold militias, militants and security groups in Najaf and other cities accountable for their attacks on Iraqis exercising their right to peaceful protest.

"The Iraqi government should immediately address the legitimate grievances of the demonstrators by enacting reforms and tackling corruption," he said.

Pompeo then went to the Iraqi people, whom he described as "brave" and said "to the brave Iraqi people seeking a government free from corruption and Iranian interference (...) We offer America's ongoing friendship and support to the Iraqi people, and we reaffirm the United States' lasting commitment to it and a strong, sovereign Iraq." And prosperous. "

(Baghdad: Al Furat News) Today, Saturday, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, directed the withdrawal of the blue hats owners from the demonstration squares.

On his Twitter account, Al-Sadr published a charter entitled: "The Reform Revolution Charter".

The charter was as follows:

First: to continue the peaceful demonstrations,

This means the following: 1 - Never forcing anyone to demonstrate and protest. عدم- Not to cut roads and harm public life. 3 - Not to prevent attendance in all schools, but universities and their equivalents are optional and without forcing or not permanently. 4- Never violating private and public properties, utilities, photos, headquarters, and so forth. 5- Evacuating the protest and sit-in areas from any manifestations of armament .. This applies to Molotov cocktails, halls, sticks, and so forth, by handing them over to the security forces.

Second: Managing demonstrations from the inside and giving up those controlling them from the outside.

Third: The demonstrations should not be politicized by internal or external parties, party or otherwise.

Fourth: The declaration of innocence from the infiltrators and saboteurs, which the Marjaiya and other religious and clan leaders indicated to it.

Fifth: Unifying the demands and writing them uniformly for all the demonstrations in Iraq.

Sixth: Work to form committees from within the demonstrations in order to demand the release of the detainees and the kidnappers, and a serious investigation into the case of the reform martyrs who fell during the demonstrations.

Seventh: Work to find a spokesman for the demonstrations.

Eighth: Not to violate the security forces, including the (traffic police) at all ... and to present the former or later aggressors to the security forces immediately.

Ninth: Taking into account the legal and social rules of the country as much as possible, not mixing the two sexes in the tents of the sit-in, and evacuating the places of protests from the forbidden intoxicants, drugs, and the like.

Tenth: Withdrawal (the blue hats) and handing over the order to protect peaceful demonstrators) and tents are in the hands of the armed security forces.

Eleventh: Determine places to demonstrate in general and sit-in in particular, through official approvals and in coordination with the security forces directly.

Twelfth: Commitment to the directives of the National Authority and References.

Thirteenth: The expulsion of everyone who stirs internal strife and sectarianism, and everyone who attacks the divine self or religious and social norms and the like.

Fourteenth: Friday will be a day for mass Iraqi demonstrations, without declaring any affiliation with non-Iraq, and without discrimination with a shout, an act, a sign, or the like.

Fifteenth: Investigation of the incident (Al Wathba), (the shrine of Sayyid al-Hakim), (the incident of Sadr Square), the massacre of Nasiriyah and the like in all governorates.

Sixteenth: The demonstrators do not interfere in secondary political matters, such as appointments, and reject some policies from here and there, and therefore, there are special parties that do them as well as others.

Seventeenth: The revolutionaries are not forced to form the interim government ... in which it denigrates the reformist revolution.

Eighteen: Giving importance to the gathering of university students, in which it is a victory for reform and not to attack or harass them as long as they are peaceful. And continue to do so until early elections.

Yesterday, Friday, the supreme authority in Najaf called on the official security forces to protect the demonstrations and not shirk their role.

"The official security forces are indispensable in avoiding falling into the shafts of chaos and disturbing public order, it is they who should bear the responsibility to maintain security and stability, protect the protest arenas and peaceful demonstrators, expose aggressors and intruders, and preserve the interests of citizens," said the representative of the authority, Mr. Ahmed Al-Safi. From the aggressors of the saboteurs, and there is no justification for her to avoid her from carrying out her duties in this context, nor is it justified to prevent her from doing so or to confront what is at the heart of her duties, and she must act with complete professionalism and refrain from using violence in dealing with peaceful protests and prevent abuse of her participants, and The same time to prevent damage to public property or for any pretext or title. " is over

Former PM of Iraq Warns Iran to End Interventions

Former PM of Iraq Warns Iran to End Interventions

ERBIL — Iraqi politician and the former prime minister of the country, Ayad Allawi, has warned Iran to end its unwelcome interventions in Iraq’s political process.

The president of al-Wataniya Coalition said in a statement on Monday that Tehran has breached “the red lines” by attempting to bring the entirety of Iraq’s politics under its control.

Earlier on Sunday, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior aide to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, said that Baghdad should join Tehran, Damascus, Beirut, and Palestine in standing against the United States in the Middle East.

“Iran has crossed the red line, and it has proven that it intervenes in the internal affairs of Iraq,” Allawi said. “We warn Iran that it will not succeed in its dream of controlling the Arab region.”

Iraq is bigger than Iran’s dreams,” the Iraqi politician said, warning the Tehran government that its policies could lead to further instability if continued this way.

Baghdad / Obelisk: British Ambassador to Baghdad, Stephen Hickey, commented, on Wednesday 12 February 2020, on the killing of the executive director of Al-Rashid Satellite Channel, Nizar Thanoon, last Tuesday by unknown gunmen, west of Baghdad.

Hickey said in a tweet on his Twitter platform: I was shocked by the death of Nizar Dhanoun by unknown assailants, and that freedom of expression is a basic human right, and it is also a right that the nation should be proud of.

He added that these assassinations and kidnappings and intimidation cannot continue, and those responsible must be held accountable.

Political analyst: The continued flow of Iraqi money to Hezbollah ... the most prominent goal of Kawtharani

image.php?token=0dafe803830324bcc0d136ff978cdaa5&c=1753529&size=

Baghdad / news

Hezbollah representative in Iraq, Muhammad al-Kawtharani, hosted meetings of the Iraqi armed factions for several goals, including the continued flow of Iraqi money to Hezbollah, in addition to directing the Iraqi factions loyal to Iran to contain the protests.

Political analyst Ahmed Al-Abiad said in a press statement, "The armed factions in Iraq are now concerned with the American presence because they consider it the obstacle in front of them, which caused embarrassment to the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi and will cause embarrassment also to Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi if he succeeds in forming his government."

Al-Abiad added that "the reason for Muhammad Al-Kawtharani’s meeting with the Iraqi factions comes is that Hezbollah considers Iraq more important than Lebanon in terms of the flow of funds, since the banking sector in Lebanon is restricted by many restrictions not the same as in Iraq, so the Iraqi depth in relation to Hezbollah is more important than the Lebanese depth. For this reason, Kawtharani met with the Iraqi factions in order to continue the flow of Iraqi money to Hezbollah as well as to control the protests in the country.

"After the death of more than 1,000 Iraqi demonstrators and the wounding of 30,000 others, they believed that during Allawi's mandate, the demonstrations would end," he said.

And that "there is field intelligence for the uprisings and even the issue of bridges was caused by the fact that the revolutionaries wanted to take into account the interests of people in them because there were interests that disrupted simple people and the process of restoring life to some commercial areas is important." The moral base that gains people. "

Reuters news agency quoted Iraqi sources as saying that Hezbollah's representative in Iraq, Muhammad al-Kawtharani, hosted meetings of Iraqi armed factions for the protests.

The sources said that "Al-Kawtharani replaced Soleimani and rebuked the armed groups, as Soleimani did in one of his recent meetings with her for failing to reach a unified plan to contain the popular protests against the Baghdad government and the paramilitary forces that dominate it."

Iraqi women march in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square to demand equality

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi women joined anti-government activists in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square on Thursday to demand equality and reject Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s demand for gender segregation of protesters.

Protesters have occupied public spaces in Iraq’s southern and central cities since October 1 to demand an overhaul of the political system and a better life.

Women have played a core role in the movement, nursing wounded protesters, painting murals, and cooking for those camped out – defying the norms of an otherwise deeply conservative society.

Like their male counterparts, female protesters have faced violent repression by security forces and pro-government militias. Many have been abducted or shot dead, leading the majority to stay home. On Thursday they returned in force.

“The ultimate goal is to establish women’s role, for their voice to descend [on the squares] and demand their rights. We are the ones coming to obtain our rights. It shouldn’t be that we must sit in our homes while the men go and get us our rights,” Ban Aaraji, the organizer of the march, told Rudaw.

“On October 2, I remember women descended [on the squares] to create a [protective barrier] for the young men, but they were assaulted. But after [October] 25, we saw women’s role, her voice, and what she has done,” protester Fatimah Ramadhan told Rudaw.

Most of the women who marched on Thursday were university and school students. Slogans included “stop discrimination against women” and “end gender segregation” and “women are revolution, not genitals”.

“We are part of this society, this homeland, and the part damaged by displacement, being victims of Daesh, laws,” another protester told Rudaw, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State (ISIS).

She called for new legislation to ban “al-Nahu Wal Fasliyah”. Al-Nahu (prohibition) refers to family members in tribal societies preventing women from getting married to someone outside of the tribe. Al-Fasliya refers to when a woman is forced to marry someone from another tribe as payment for spilled blood to prevent a blood feud.

In a tribal country like Iraq, tribal feuds are not uncommon, and women are largely the ones who suffer as a result. Other archaic practices such as honor killings for infractions as minor as discovering a girl’s relationship with a boy threaten the lives of women.

On top of societal practices, many women have been left vulnerable after losing their homes and their husbands in the ISIS conflict. Yezidi women, in particular, were consigned to sexual slavery after being abducted by the group.

“We also demand laws that establish equality between men and women, and we also ask for criminals, including corrupt politicians, and criminals of honor killings to be put before the courts,” the protester added.

Women withdrew gradually from the anti-government protests after a spate of assaults. One activist, Saba al-Mahdawi, was abducted and held for several days by unknown gunmen.

Thursday’s march and the participation of women in the movement alongside men more generally has been criticized by conservative Shiite leaders, including influential cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

The march was largely organized in response to Sadr’s February 8 “Reform Revolution Charter” – an 18 point charter that was designed to set social parameters on the protests.

“Religious, social principles of the country should be taken consideration as much as possible, and for no mixing between the two sexes in protester tents to take place,” Sadr said in his charter.

Reacting to Sadr’s words, one protester told Rudaw: “Women’s play a big role in Tahrir. Because of what was said, that it is prohibited for women to go to Tahrir, we organized a march to come and support our brothers and youth here.”

Sadr for years championed the reform agenda in Iraq, presenting himself as a patriotic Iraqi voice against foreign intervention and against corruption. For years, even at the height of the war against ISIS, Sadr gathered millions of his supporters in Baghdad to march on the fortified Green Zone to demand an end to corruption.

The protests which began in October were largely spontaneous, and Sadr initially supported the cause. He later flip-flopped and ordered his supporters to violently take control of the movement.

“This is wrong. There is already mixing in universities between males and females. Even primary schools are mixed. This [women and men mixing] is a very normal,” said protester Mariyam Saeed.

“Women actually have the right to come out and protest the same as men. They are our sisters,” Ayoub Jamal, a male protestor, told Rudaw.

Sadr attacked the all-female march on Twitter, calling it sinful, immoral and licentious and against Iraqi values, likening it to religious extremism.

“We today are committed to prevent Iraq from becoming like Kandahar for religious extremism, and neither Chicago for liberation, moral decadence, homosexuality for the licentious and immoral,” Sadr said.

“I advise these aberrant bunches of the Daesh of civility and liberation not to follow their animal instincts and fleeting lusts. We won’t stand by and watch while religious belief and homeland are abused,” Sadr warned.

Iraq protesters rally for one of their own to become PM

Popular Iraqi protester Alaa al-Rikaby. Photo via social media

KARBALA, Iraq – Hundreds of Iraqis rallied Sunday to support a protest leader they want as prime minister instead of current premier-designate Mohammad Allawi, who they see as too close to the ruling class.

Appointed on February 1, Allawi has pledged to announce his cabinet lineup within the week even as he faces ongoing protests against his nomination -- and a new contender.

In the shrine city of Karbala, dozens of students took to the streets carrying photos of Alaa al-Rikaby, a pharmacist who has emerged as a prominent activist in the protest hotspot of Nasiriyah, further south.

"We're here to show our support for Alaa al-Rikaby, the candidate of the people!" said Seif al-Hasnawy, a 20-year-old student.

Rikaby, who has a round face and closely-trimmed beard, began demonstrating in early October alongside others fed up with rampant corruption, lack of jobs and poor public services.

He has since risen to local fame with a series of videos posted on Twitter to his tens of thousands of followers, discussing politics and a path forward for the otherwise leaderless anti-government movement.

In one video last week, he asked protesters who gather at squares across the country to show whether they would back him for the post of prime minister, in a novel approach for a political nomination in Iraq.

"If the people decide so, I'd accept," he said in his latest video on Thursday.

"This post has no value as such for me. I don't see it as a prize, but rather as a huge responsibility," said Rikaby, who has a tent pitched in central Nasiriyah targeted in a recent stun grenade attack.

In Karbala, university student Hassan Qazwini told AFP: "We protesters have numerous demands, and one of them is an independent prime minister without ties to parties -- like Alaa al-Rikaby."

Before Rikaby, Faeq al-Sheikh Ali, a liberal critic of the ruling class, also declared himself a candidate but has not received mass public or political backing.

Allawi was nominated on February 1 as a consensus candidate among Iraq's fractured political parties but has only been publicly endorsed by cleric Moqtada Sadr, who has a cult-like following across the country.

Since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, cabinets have been formed through a sectarian power-sharing system, leading to widespread horsetrading among various sects and parties.

Iraq's Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish factions are likely to hold on tight to their shares of posts in the outgoing cabinet and aim to carry them over into the next lineup.

Allawi has until March 2 to form a government and Iraqi officials have quietly expressed scepticism that he would be able to complete it in time.

But in a surprising tweet on Saturday, Allawi said he would be ready to submit a cabinet to parliament within the week for a vote of confidence.

Parliament is officially in recess until mid-March and the house speaker, Mohammed Halbusi, has not yet scheduled an extraordinary session.
