Sadr's terrorist gangs open fire on Iraqi protesters

https://www.thebaghdadpost.com/en/Story/45885/Sadr-s-terrorist-gangs-open-fire-on-Iraqi-protesters

Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's gangs, also known as blue hats, on Monday opened fire on people protesting against the appointment of Mohamed Taqfik Allawi as prime minister.

Such clashes will drag the country in a civil war on the orders of Iran's supreme leader Khamenei and Hezbollah official Kawtharani.

On the other hand, the demonstrators ripped the pictures of Muqtada al-Sadr in all governorates.

Sources say that Sadr's steps to involve Iraq in a civil war aim at pushing Iraq into chaos for three years in order for Iran to regain control over Iraq.

Sadr, who had alternately sided with the anti-government protesters and the Iran-backed political groups they reject, urged his unarmed supporters known as “blue hats” to work with authorities to ensure schools and businesses can operate normally again.

Protests broke out immediately in Baghdad and several southern cities on Saturday night after President Barham Salih named Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi as prime minister in an effort to end the political unrest.

On Sunday, thousands gathered in Baghdad’s Tahrir square, where the main protest camp in the capital is located, to reject the move. They banged drums and chanted against Allawi and Sadr, saying “Allawi is rejected and so are his parties”.
In a message issued on Twitter, Sadr said “I advise the security forces to stop anyone from cutting off roads and the ministry of education should punish those who obstruct regular working hours, be they students, teachers or others”.
Some of his followers appeared to have helped already to clear out protest areas in Tahrir Square overnight, a Reuters reporter said.

Hours before Allawi’s appointment, the blue hats, armed with batons, attacked a skeleton building in Tahrir Square, known as the Turkish Restaurant, that demonstrators have occupied since October.

The building was mostly empty on Sunday and the blue hats stood guard, occupying its gates and pacing with walkie-talkies outside it.

“They attacked us by surprise and forced us out of the building shouting that we didn’t do any good to the country except ruining its economy,” said Rassoul, 20, a protester who has lived in the Turkish Restaurant since October.
Anti-government protests continued nearby, with demonstrators directing their ire towards Allawi. He was named on Saturday as part of a deal between Sadr and rival Iran-backed political groups, who have wrangled since November’s resignation of premier Adel Abdul Mahdi.

At Iraq protests, a cleric's tweets split his followers

image.png.07c4691303a78415a4cabb58be362a12.png

https://www.thebaghdadpost.com/en/Story/45882/At-Iraq-protests-a-cleric-s-tweets-split-his-followers

Sporting their signature blue caps, the men marched triumphantly through Baghdad's protest camp. The die-hard followers of firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr were back in Tahrir Square, and they wanted everyone to know it.

Sadr, an enigmatic Shiite cleric who shot to prominence years ago by battling US occupation troops with his notorious Mahdi Army, has built a cult-like following across Iraq and controls the largest parliamentary bloc.

Rarely seen in public, the 45-year-old with the round, turbaned face has fuelled the sense of chaos of months-long anti-government protests with a dizzying and often contradictory series of directives issued via Twitter.
Back in October, he sent thousands of "Sadrists" into the streets to support the unprecedented wave of rallies demanding the ouster of Iraq's entire political class and slamming their backers in Iran.

In late January, Sadr suddenly told supporters to pack up their tents -- but a week later he changed course again, issuing an impassioned call that saw them back in protest camps "to renew the peaceful, reformist revolution".

On Saturday, Sadr endorsed Iraq's new prime minister-designate Mohammad Allawi, a figure loathed by the youths in revolt, in a move that has splintered protest squares.

Hardcore Sadrists then ousted protesters from a multi-storey building that had become a symbol of the uprising, tearing down portraits of youths shot dead in rallies and banners listing demonstrators' demands.

The head-spinning back-and-forth of Sadr's positions, usually by tweet, has stuck a wedge in his millions-strong base, even his followers say.

- 'Love and obedience' -

At the weekend, Sadr's face could be seen on posters taped to three-wheeled motor-rickshaws and carried in gold-rimmed frames by fervent fans in Tahrir.
"If our lord, our commander Sadr told us to walk into a fire, we'd do it," said Nabil, a middle-aged supporter.

Nabil said he had torn down his protest tent when Sadr said he would no longer back the anti-regime rallies, but had returned Saturday following the latest directive.

Asked if the contradicting orders confused him, he said no.
Nadia Abbas, a 45-year-old woman from Sadr's namesake stronghold in east Baghdad, Sadr City, also said she saw "no contradiction between last week and right now".

"Whatever he says, we do. Big or small," she told AFP, as a cluster of veiled woman around her nodded in agreement.

Sadr's younger supporters weren't so sure.

Many of them had defied the cleric's orders last month and remained in Tahrir, watching in disbelief as neighbours packed up their tents.

"From the moment I came here, when the revolution started, I've seen a lot -- people dying, falling in the street and someone picking them up, ambulances, blood," said Hamza, 26, who follows the Sadrist movement.

"We got used to all those scenes but what hurt me the most was watching those tents be taken away. I felt like I was from one country and they were from another," he said.

Hussein, 24, struggled to explain the differing orders.
"He's the commander, but his statement wasn't a direct order to withdraw," the blue-eyed demonstrator insisted.

If Sadr issued a clear order to abandon the protests, what would he do?
Hussein paused, then said: "There's no way I would leave. Anyway, he'd never do that."

Ali, 29, hails from Sadr City and his older brother died fighting for the cleric's Mahdi Army in the years after the 2003 US-led invasion.
He had spent the past four months living in a tent in Tahrir, but said he couldn't blindly follow Sadr's tweets.

"The Sadrist movement has a huge popular base -- eight million people isn't nothing," he said. "Their hearts are with the protests, but love and obedience are two different things."

- 'Growing schism' -

The movement was founded by Sadr's father and was one of the first Shiite religious currents to adopt populist and even revolutionary rhetoric under Saddam's brutal regime.

It has splintered multiple times, and many of the powerful armed factions in Iraq today trace their roots back to the Sadrist movement, including those that oppose the protests.

"The danger of another schism is always there," a source within the Sadrist movement told AFP, asking not to be named in order to be able to speak freely.

Asked about the recent divide over Sadr's shifting positions, the source said: "Ultimately, this is a religious movement, not a democratic one."

Renad Mansour, a researcher at the London-based Chatham House, said Sadr was struggling to reconcile his populist rhetoric with a growing stake in the state, where he controls parliament's largest bloc and key ministry posts.
"There's been a growing schism for a while," said Mansour.

"But winning the (2018 parliamentary) election put him into the elite, and he's trying to balance too many things."

This is my favorite part: "On the other hand, the demonstrators ripped the pictures of Muqtada al-Sadr in all governorates."

Maybe some meaning was lost in translation, but it comes off as, "However, the murders were a bit justified since they ripped Sadr's poster down."

Anyway, keep it up Sadr. You're playing 3D chess here.

Video .. Demonstrators praying liberation in response to its storming of the "blue hats"

Shafaq News / Large numbers of demonstrators arrived in Tahrir Square, in the center of Baghdad, today, Monday, in response to the storming of the "blue hats" of the Sadrist movement to the square.

On Sunday, Sadr directed "blue hats" in coordination with the security forces to restore official working hours, and to open roads that were blocked by protesters in the areas where demonstrations are taking place in Iraq.

The protests in Iraq that started since the beginning of last October are witnessing a major escalation, in protest against the mandate of President Barham Salih, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, to form a new government, which paves the way for early legislative elections in the country.

The cleric Sadr endorsed new PM Allawi while other protesters rejected him

In Diwaniyah the rift escalated into a fistfight between anti-regime demonstrators and Sadr backers

DIWANIYAH: Anti-government demonstrators faced off against followers of influential cleric Moqtada Sadr in protest squares across Iraq Tuesday, a day after one demonstrator was killed in a clash between the two sides.
Sadr, an enigmatic militiaman-turned-politician, backed the anti-government rallies when they erupted in October but has split with other demonstrators over the nomination of Mohammad Allawi as prime minister.
The cleric endorsed Allawi while other protesters rejected him, saying he was too close to the ruling elite they had been demonstrating against for four months.
In the southern city of Diwaniyah on Tuesday, the rift escalated into a fistfight between young anti-regime demonstrators and Sadr backers, recognizable by their signature blue head caps, an AFP correspondent said.
Police intervened to separate the two camps but the young protesters broke into chants against Sadr, Iraqi authorities as well as Iran, accused by demonstrators of backing the government's crackdown against them.
Also in Diwaniyah, security forces could be seen outside schools and government offices in an attempt to ensure they reopened fully after sit-ins had forced them to shut.
It came after the interior ministry late Monday said it had ordered reinforcements to schools, and a few students could be seen trickling in the following morning.
Hundreds of students refused to go back to class, however, marching through the main anti-government protest camp with Iraqi flags and a banner that read, “Protest March for Diwaniyah High Schools.”
In Nasiriyah, too, all schools had reopened after police deployed, according to the education directorate's press chief Halim al-Hossayni.
But students took to the streets there as well to insist on keeping up their protests.
“We’re determined to pursue our peaceful movement in Habbubi square, because we want a homeland free of corruption and sectarian people,” said student Hamad Ali.
Tensions have been high in protest squares in recent days between youths furious at Allawi's nomination and Sadrists.
On Monday, a demonstrator was stabbed to death and three others wounded after men in blue caps attacked an anti-regime rally, medics and security sources said.
Allawi, 65, was nominated on February 1 after two months of political stalemate over who would replace ex-premier Adel Abdel Mahdi, who resigned in December.

Muqtada al-Sadr militia members assaulted, Tuesday, students demonstrators in the Tahrir Square in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where Sadrists activists documented videos published on social media.

A security source told Al-Hurra that the Sadr militia, which calls itself "Peace Brigades" or "blue hats owners", interfered with the students' demonstration and prevented them from chanting, and one of the students beaten them.

The source added that the armed militia installed checkpoints for the demonstrators, which caused skirmishes because some of them refrained from searching, as they did not represent a security authority.

On Monday, an anti-government protester died of his wounds after being stabbed with a knife in southern Baghdad, during an attack on demonstrators by the Sadr militia, according to medical and security sources confirmed to AFP.

Three other protesters were wounded by sticks, according to medical sources, during the clash that ended with the intervention of security forces and the removal of the Peace Brigades militia from the protest camp in front of the headquarters of the Babil Governorate Council since the beginning of October.

After the demonstrators refused to appoint Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, as prime minister, the armed militias affiliated with Al-Sadr began attacking the demonstrators, attempting to break the sit-ins by force, and forcing them to accept Allawi's appointment.

Activists have monitored the use of live bullets and white weapons by the Sadr militia, to break up demonstrations in a number of Iraqi cities.

In Najaf Governorate, Sadr followers opened fire on a number of demonstrators, and they also assaulted others with white weapons in a number of other fields, as happened in Hilla, in Babil Governorate.
