Baghdad / news

The President of the Republican Center for Strategic Studies, Moataz Mohiuddin, suggested that a strict Security Council resolution against Iraq would be issued because of the targeting of the US embassy if Washington raised the issue.

Mohiuddin said in a press statement, "The US government has more than once warned the Iraqi government that it is concerned with protecting the embassy. It has also warned the armed factions of this matter."

Mohieddine said that "the Iraqi government seems to have no choice but to stand by and that some security leaders resort to silence about this." And a second return to the issue of Iraq and its inability to protect diplomatic missions, which could lead to a Security Council resolution against Iraq, may be strict. "

"On the other side, Washington could resort to delivering specific strikes to some of these factions," he said.

US halts weapons deliveries to Iraq amid tensions with Baghdad

Iraqi-Army-in-western-Anbar-954x516

The United States stopped all weapons deliveries to Iraq in the midst of the growing tensions with the government in Baghdad, the US-based Inside Defense news site reported.

The freeze includes halting supplies for the new F-16 fleet, the report said on Monday citing Air Force spokesperson Brian Brackens.

The Pentagon will resume shipments “when the environment in Iraq is safe enough,” Brackens said, according to the report.

On Sunday, three missiles landed on the US embassy’s territory in Baghdad, with one of the missiles hitting the embassy’s restaurant. Several people were reportedly injured.

In early January, the Iraqi parliament voted to expel all foreign forces from the country and also raised the voice for ceasing cooperation with the international coalition.

This came as a response to Washington’s operation, in which Abu Mahdi Muhandis, the deputy commander of the Iraqi Shia militia, and Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian top general – both allegedly involved in the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad on 31 December – were killed.

Washington has threatened that it will impose sanctions on Iraq if the US forces are expelled. Meanwhile, when Salih met with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, the latter reiterated US’s support for stability in Iraq.

Local Iraqi media reported on Wednesday that a leader of Muqtada Al-Sadr militia known as "Saraya Al-Salam" militia was killed in Maysan Governorate, southern Iraq, after he was seriously wounded.

Security sources said that "Abu Muqtada Al-Izrajawi was shot dead on Tuesday evening in front of his house in Abu Rummaneh district in Maysan province."

She added that Al-Azrajawi was transferred to the hospital following the attack, and his condition remained unstable, to be announced on Wednesday as a result of his wounds.

The incident coincides with the Sadr militia, which recently became known as the "blue hats owners", attacking the demonstrators and trying to break up their gatherings by force since the announcement of Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi as the new prime minister.

Allawi was charged with forming the government after an agreement between the Sadr movement bloc of Muqtada al-Sadr and the Alliance of Construction led by Hadi al-Amiri and pro-Iran.

Last October, Maysan Governorate witnessed the killing of Wissam Al-Olaywi, a prominent leader in the pro-Iranian "Asaib Ahl al-Haq" militia, as a result of an armed attack on its headquarters.

Fingers were charged in the al-Alawy incident, killing Sadr members, and arrest warrants were issued against a number of them in Maysan Governorate. Where observers pointed out that the differences between the pro-Iranian militias are still present and often lead to liquidation operations between their elements.

It is noteworthy that the relationship between the leader of the Peace Brigades militia (formerly the Mahdi Army) Muqtada al-Sadr and the leader of Asaib Ahl al-Haq Qais Khazali have been tense since the latter split from the Mahdi Army and formed its own militia in 2006.

Sadr calls the "brazen militia" the Qais Khazali group.
