Trump’s Doral Resort Spikes Its Room Rates Ahead Of His RNC Visit

Recommended Posts

DORAL, Fla. ― The president’s Miami golf resort that puts money into his pocket more than doubled its room rates just before the White House announced his Thursday visit ― possibly increasing taxpayer costs for staff who must travel there in advance.

Donald Trump’s plan to address the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting at Trump National Doral next to the Miami airport has been in the works since mid-January, about the same time that the resort raised the nightly rate for its least expensive rooms from $254 to $539.

That higher figure is just under the maximum per-night rate federal government rules permit for a hotel in South Florida, and is triple the normal “per diem” rate employees are supposed to follow.

The White House would not reveal how much Trump’s Secret Service agents or other members of his “advance” team are paying for the days prior to his visit. Trump is only scheduled to be at the property for a few hours, but at least two dozen staff typically need to get there a few days ahead of time to prepare for his arrival.

Doral officials refused to discuss how much they are charging for U.S. government employees staying there for Trump’s visit. The Trump Organization, the president’s family business that owns and operates the resort, also did not respond to queries from HuffPost.

A Secret Service spokesperson declined to give details about the visit: “For operational security reasons, the Secret Service does not discuss our protectees or our protective means and methods. This includes personnel numbers associated with a particular protective visit.”

Robert Weissman, president of the liberal watchdog group Public Citizen, said the episode illustrates Trump’s continued use of his office to enrich himself. “What better way to defend yourself in an impeachment trial over abuse of power than to jet to your private golf resort on the public dime, secure lots of publicity for the club on the public dime, and then, possibly, rip off taxpayers by forcing them to pay extra for the staff whose costs at the resort are billed to ‘we the people,’” Weissman said.

Room Rates Spiked With Trump’s Visit

If, in fact, two or three dozen government employees have spent several days there, that would have put tens of thousands of public dollars into Trump’s cash registers, between the room rates and the higher-than-average cost for food at the on-site restaurants. That is on top of the $500,000 or so that the RNC is likely to wind up paying for staff hotel rooms, meeting rooms and catering for its three-day gathering, as well as the $1,000 or more each of the 168 individual RNC members is paying out of pocket to attend.

RNC officials declined to reveal how much, exactly, the meeting is costing its donors. However, records filed with the Federal Election Commission show the RNC already paid Doral $169,763 on Nov. 6, likely as a deposit for the meeting. The party previously spent $602,765 at Doral for its 2018 spring meeting, and $84,822 for a lunch fundraiser it held there in June 2019.

The timing of that November payment means the RNC settled on holding its winter meeting at Doral just 18 days after Trump backed down from his plan to award a multimillion-dollar government contract to the resort to host the Group of Seven conference there this June.

Trump had claimed he would not make any money from the contract, but never made clear how that was possible. He is the sole beneficiary of the trust that owns Trump Organization, and Trump Organization owns his hotels and golf resorts, including Doral.

Because Trump insists on playing golf at his own properties, American taxpayers have been the source for at least a few million dollars that have gone to the Trump Organization in the form of rooms, meals and other expenses for Secret Service agents and other government employees who have stayed on-site with Trump at his golf courses in Florida, New Jersey, Scotland and Ireland. The exact amount is not known because the White House refuses to release those records.

Trump was not originally planning to attend this week’s RNC meeting. He started considering doing so early last week, which was when the hotel also raised its room rates for the nights of and just prior to his visit.

For the latter half of December and the first days of January, Doral’s website advertised rates as low as $254 per night for nonrefundable rooms for the days of the RNC meeting, and a $299 rate that allowed cancellation until five days before the first night of the booking, according to HuffPost’s tracking of the room rates.

Those numbers suddenly jumped to $459 a night on Jan. 13, soon after the White House first began planning for a potential Trump trip to the meeting. The next day it jumped to $539 a night, before falling to $499 per room on Jan. 15, but with rooms only available for the final night of the RNC meeting, and the first two nights sold out.

Rooms for RNC members, in contrast, were available in a block for $289 per night.

Yet even that rate appears to be substantially more than what the market will bear. On Monday, for example, the hotel website was showing rooms available for that night at just $209. On Tuesday, the least expensive room available was $224 a night.

Making Money Off The Presidency

The jump in room rates at Doral continues a pattern of Trump properties hiking rates to take advantage of campaign and election-related events hosted by Republicans.

In 2016, Trump nearly quintupled the rent he charged his campaign for space in Trump Tower after he secured the GOP nomination and had access to the RNC’s donors, from $35,458 a month to $169,758, even though the number of employees remained the same.

In 2017, according to documents obtained by the group Property of the People under the Freedom of Information Act, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach refused to lower its room charges below the legal maximum $546 a night for administration officials staying there, despite State Department requests to bring them into line with the government per diem of $182. The White House ultimately also approved a $1,005.60 bar tab after the State Department would not do so.

And in November, according to the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel a few blocks from the White House raised its rates threefold ― to more than $1,300 a night for its cheapest rooms ― for nights coinciding with a fundraising retreat for Senate Republicans. That hotel has similarly raised its cheapest rates to $1,600 for this November’s election night.

“Not only is the president personally profiting from his office by the increased political patronage of his business, the business raises rates when he does so he’ll profit even more,” said CREW’s Jordan Libowitz. “What we’re seeing is a blending of Trump’s political career and his business, which is certainly not something you want to see from the president of the United States.”

It is also questionable whether Republicans and other supporters are getting their money’s worth at Doral when they have so many other South Florida options to choose from. Trump likes to boast that his resort is first-rate, but it has suffered financially since Trump became president while also suffering in contrast to other resorts in the area.

While the city of Doral is in Miami-Dade County, it is removed from the attractions most people have in mind when they think of Miami. The golf resort boasts plenty of ornate chandeliers and baroque fountains — but lies directly beneath the flight path of Miami International Airport’s takeoffs and landings, and is miles from the closest beach.

During the RNC’s meeting there in 2018, the troubled property appeared to be skimping on maintenance costs. At least one of the guest buildings smelled of mildew, as did its guest rooms, while the restaurant on the lower floor in the main lodge had a mustiness tinged with the fraternity house odor of spilled alcohol.

Nearly two years later, at this current RNC meeting, the mustiness appears to remain, at least in some areas. The downstairs restaurant, however, seems to have eliminated the stale beer odor.

Lindsey Graham Bizarrely Defends Trump: ‘He Did Nothing Wrong In His Mind’

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Thursday came up with a bizarre explanation for why President Donald Trump shouldn’t be removed from office: He didn’t think he was doing anything wrong.

“If thought he was doing something wrong, he would probably shut up about it,” Graham told reporters.

Take some time and look it up yourself......these expenses are all public record......very sure the author of your article didn't bother......the media just makes it up as they go.....

It always amuses me when I read how Trump is cashing in on the Presidency......when he had the TV shows most everyone seemed to enjoy him, and his quirkiness.....that would be people of all political leanings.....

Funny thing happened.....he ran for President an 63 million voted against him....polarized by party....spoon fed by the media.....so now he, and his brand are taboo for half the country......just the facts...

I thought 63 million voted for Trump and roughly 67 million for Clinton.....I could be wrong, but I think those numbers are correct.  I will concur completely with you on the spoon fed by the media comment.  MSNBC and CNN are pretty adept at that....of course FOX News is the standard bearer of spoon feeding, just as their top ratings have proven, over and over again.

You can still find rooms in the City of Brotherly Love for the Democratic National Convention if you don’t mind paying unbrotherly prices.

Average hotel rates in Philadelphia this week are up 51 percent year over year, compared with a 38 percent rise for the Republican National Convention last week in Cleveland, according to bookings data from travel site TripAdvisor.

Here’s what you can expect to spend for less-than-luxurious accommodations:

  • A two-star hotel room in Philadelphia ranges from $134 per night to $499 per night during the convention, according to data from hotel booking site Priceline.
  • An extra star will cost $223 per night to $699 per night, Priceline estimates.

Searches on booking sites for rooms in Philadelphia have spiked as people look for last-minute accommodations, and are now up 265 percent compared with equivalent days last year, travel site Hipmunk estimates. That spike doesn’t compare to the 393 percent increase in searches for Cleveland rooms during the recent political convention, according to Hipmunk.

Philadelphia versus Cleveland

Philadelphia officials expect fewer out-of-town visitors for the DNC than Cleveland estimated for the RNC, but project a larger economic impact. (Keep in mind that Philadelphia, which has a population of 1.55 million, is nearly four times as large as Cleveland, population 390,000.)

About 40,000 people are expected to visit Philadelphia for the DNC, booking 15,000 hotel rooms and bringing in up to $300 million for the city, according to the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Destination Cleveland, the city’s convention and visitors bureau, forecast 50,000 RNC visitors, with 16,700 rooms booked and direct spending by conventioneers of up to $250 million.

Home-sharing sites, such as Airbnb, and higher average hotel room prices in Philly compared with Cleveland contributed to lower estimates of booked rooms, said Julie Coker Graham, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Definitely, the use of Airbnb is a force we need to wrap our arms around in convention business,” Coker Graham said.

Philly visitors turn to home sharing

The average Airbnb host in Philly will earn roughly $850 during the DNC by renting out their space, according to the company. Typical Cleveland hosts earned $1,500 during the GOP confab.

Though the Cleveland hosts have higher average earnings, more people are expected to stay at Airbnb-listed places during the DNC  5,200 visitors compared with 1,900 at Airbnbs in Cleveland.

Two-thirds of Cleveland Airbnb users and 25 percent of Philly users tried the home-sharing site for the first time during the convention.

So whatever happens coming out of the political conventions, Airbnb is a clear winner.

Dems seek lobbyist cash to fund Milwaukee convention

Party representatives are meeting with lobbyists about funding the $70 million event as candidates swear off corporate-connected dollars.

Two top operatives planning the Democratic Party’s 2020 convention in Milwaukee went to K Street last week to pitch lobbyists on their plans for the $70 million event.

Against the backdrop of the Democratic primary, it was an awkward pairing — representatives for special interests meeting with top Democrats while the party’s leading presidential candidates reject corporate PAC and lobbyist cash. But Democratic National Committee officials explained during the meeting how corporations can help foot the bill for the convention, regardless of who the nominee is, addressing some lobbyists’ worries that a crusading left-wing nominee like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren could try to reject corporate money, embarrassing convention sponsors.

The DNC doesn’t plan to return any corporate money that is donated to the convention regardless of the nominee, convention CEO Joe Solmonese told POLITICO. But the corporate money issue is just one challenge facing Democrats preparing for the capstone event of their 2020 nominating process, from low unionization rates in Milwaukee hotels — a potential hitch for labor groups important to the Democratic Party — to the logistics of squeezing the party into its smallest convention host city since 1988. As the presidential candidates fight through a long primary season, those responsible for the convention are embarking on their own protracted labor.

According to a summary of event packages obtained by POLITICO, which the convention planners circulated at the meeting with lobbyists, the perks for a a $300,000 donation include access to two well-located hotel rooms. The price is steep even by the expensive standard of national party conventions: In 2016, a $200,000 donation included five hotel rooms at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

But Milwaukee was never chosen as the convention site because it was a Washington party favorite. Done right, the Midwestern convention will help Democrats’ image on a national stage. Past conventions have boosted local parties in the host region, and Wisconsin will be one of 2020’s most important battleground states.

Solmonese has been on an extensive closed-door tour of Washington and Milwaukee to discuss the event and win over skeptics. Last week, representatives from roughly half of all state party delegations visited Milwaukee to begin making plans with their hotels for the convention.

“Most people find Milwaukee to be an inspired and compelling decision,” Solmonese said in an interview. He added: “There no doubt are going to be, as there are with every convention, additional logistical and operational challenges. We’ll meet them and we’ll make sure there is a seamlessness to this convention that people will expect.”

The DNC has not released information on its fundraising goals for the event, which needs $70 million overall. The DNC is on “pace to raise what we need to raise” for the convention and is meeting its other targets, Solmonese said.

Asked what the DNC would do if the Democratic nominee asked for corporate donations to be returned, Solmonese said the DNC has to get the convention "appropriately funded and get it paid for well in advance,” which means accepting corporate PAC donations.

Joe Solmonese

“We can’t know and try to, nor can I ever suggest that we ever try to, bend this towards any one candidate’s philosophy,” Solmonese said.

Solmonese and Sam Cornale, the DNC’s deputy chief executive, held briefings recently at six prominent lobbying firms, during which they updated lobbyists on convention planning and told them how their corporate clients can obtain packages with convention access in exchange for donations to the DNC. They discussed the possibility the Democratic nominee might call on the DNC to reject corporate cash during a briefing at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, according to a lobbyist present.

David Jones, a longtime Democratic fundraiser who attended a briefing last week at his employer, Capitol Counsel, said the DNC seemed "to be way ahead of the curve” in its planning.

But other Washington operatives said they hadn’t donated to the convention yet because the DNC has been too vague and too slow to explain the convention perks of a donation.

“No. 1, Milwaukee is not as big a city as Philadelphia, and two, the process has been slow. It’s been hard to figure out what we would get for our investment,” said one operative employed by an organization that has contributed to DNC conventions in the past but has not yet given money this cycle.

While Democrats are locked in a slow-moving primary, the convention planners want to encourage donors to give early: Donors must contribute in 2019 and 2020 in order to meet the requirements for getting convention packages, according to the fundraising summary, and contributors who give their 2020 contribution before March 31 will be given “preferred booking” for the event.

The most expensive — “Kilborn Avenue Package” — for instance, includes early access to booking two hotel rooms in the DNC’s block of rooms, VIP convention credentials, box seats, 10 tickets to convention events and other perks. The cost: $300,000.

Union delegations — historically among the conventions biggest funders — face another dilemma when it comes to staying in Milwaukee. While labor unions usually stay in unionized hotels when they travel, there are only four union hotels in Milwaukee. One of those four hotels, Knickerbocker on the Lake, is a boutique hotel with only 60 rooms.

Fiserv Forum

One draft of the convention agreement makes clear how critical labor funding will be to the event: In the draft, labor unions were expected to donate close to $10 million of the $70 million fundraising goal, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The final agreement is not public.

“Our priority is to always stay in a unionized hotel,” AFL-CIO spokesman Gonzalo Salvador said.

It’s not the first time the politics of unionization has complicated convention planning. Democrats’ choice of Charlotte, N.C., to host their 2012 convention prompted fury from unions upset about North Carolina’s "right-to-work" laws and unionization rates, which are among the lowest in the country.

Unions toned down their participation in Charlotte, sending skeleton staff and skipping out on sponsoring parties and lunches for members. The Laborers' International Union of North America did not contribute any money after donating $1.5 million to the convention in 2008.

With space in Milwaukee at a premium, the DNC announced in August that 26 state delegations will stay in Northern Illinois during the convention, with some hotel rooms located near O’Hare International Airport — a 90-minute drive without traffic.

Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist at Subject Matter, which hosted one of the briefings last week, said he wasn’t concerned by the lack of hotel rooms in Milwaukee.

“Other than New York or Chicago, every other place you go, that’s a question,” he said.

One group that will be housed close to the convention site in Milwaukee, however, is the Republican National Committee. The RNC scouted dozens of hotels near all three finalist cities for the Democratic convention and secured a block of hotel rooms 20 minutes from the convention site before Milwaukee was announced as the host, RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said. Ahrens declined to say where the GOP hub will be.

Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, said he’s eagerly awaiting announcements about space in the arena at the nominating convention. But Hinojosa said the DNC has been in frequent communication with him and other state party officials about the convention, and he was not miffed to find out his delegation would be commuting at least an hour each day.

“We’ll make sure our delegates get some margaritas on the way up or back — or both — if it’s legal,” Hinojosa said.

Ian Kullgren contributed to this report.

Hotels SOP is to raise rates during periods of higher than anticipated occupancy. So what the Doral is raising rates. The rates in the area will also be raising rates as well. The DNC convention as above articles show that rates will be raised in Philly as well. So do we go after all of these hotel owners as well? This is nothing more than an attempt at a hit peice on the POTUS because he has not fully divested from his business but chose to put his sons in charge. The TV mogul, Bloomberg, I will say with 100% accuracy if he wins the office of POTUS would do the same thing.

Trump has lost $1 billion in personal wealth since running for president

Some wealthy patrons are steering clear of Trump properties, saying the country clubT experience is now ruined "by metal detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs."

The presidency has been bad for Donald Trump's finances, with his personal net worth falling from $4.5 billion to $3.1 billion over the past two years, according to the latest Forbes billionaires list.

Trump dropped 138 spots to 259 on the Forbes 400, an annual measure of the richest people in the U.S. During that same period, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos rose to the top spot, with an estimated fortune 52 times greater than that of the president, at $160 billion.

Forbes attributed the decline of Trump's fortune to three main factors: e-commerce eating into the value of Trump's real estate holdings, the intrusion of heightened security at Trump's resorts, and Trump's own over-reporting of the size of his penthouse.

"Much as he's trying — and he's definitely trying — Donald Trump is not getting richer off the presidency," according to Forbes.

Revenue from Trump-branded ties, whiskies, MAGA hats and other merchandise has plummeted to just $3 million from $23 million in 2015. “He has significantly tarnished the brand,” licensing expert Jeff Lotman told Forbes.

Additionally:

  • Revenue at his golf clubs is down by 9 percent, in part because of the increased security that guests have to go through to attend the resorts.
  • Trump Tower condos are down 33 percent from their highs, and have fallen every year since Trump announced his run for the presidency.
  • Overall hotel revenue is down by $30 million since Trump announced he was running for president — and three major Trump-branded hotels have even stripped his name from their properties.

There are some bright spots for the Trump empire: Business at the Trump International Hotel in Washington is doing well thanks to an influx of foreign government officials and GOP bookings. Similarly, the value of the "winter White House," Mar-a-Lago, rose by $10 million, to $160 million — and also reportedly doubled its initiation fee to $200,000.

Trump notwithstanding, it's been a record year for the nation's billionaires, according to Forbes. Their total net worth rose 7 percent year on year to a high of $2.9 trillion, with an average net worth of $7.2 billion each, versus $6.7 billion last year.

The oldest person on the list is media mogul Sumner Redstone, 95, with $4.8 billion. The youngest is Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, 28, worth $2.2 billion.

Trump first appeared on the Forbes list in 1982 with his father, Fred Trump, with $200 million each. The following year, Trump Sr. disappeared from the list, and Donald Trump's fortune was listed at $400 million, according to Dan Alexander, one of the reporters of the Forbes piece. (MSNBC LOGO)
