Iraq is rising and the president in Davos .. Analysts: Saleh failed to prioritize

image.jpeg.95709f651d61e1bd347b6d900008616a.jpeg

21st January, 2020

Amid a new wave of demonstrations sweeping the country, the Iraqis were surprised on Tuesday by the travel of President Barham Saleh to Switzerland to attend the Davos conference.

The news of Saleh's travel to Davos, angered Iraqi tweets on Twitter, as some of them considered a flaw in assessing the priorities of the stage for the President of the Republic. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Iraqi President Barham Salih and the President of the Kurdistan Region, Negervan Barzani, in two separate meetings.

On the other hand, observers were divided over the priority of the visit at the present time, as the travel of the President of the Republic comes at a stormy time the country is going through, while others said that this falls within his presidential tasks.  Iraq is witnessing a new wave of demonstrations after the deadline granted by the demonstrators to the government to choose a new prime minister and the trial of those who caused the demonstrators' martyrdom has ended, but none of them has been implemented.

Political analyst Raad Hashem, said, "The invitation to attend the Davos conference was received by the Iraqi president long before and before all these events occurred, and they were answered with approval at the time." Hashem believes that, far from the invitation, Barham Salih would have "failed in the task of choosing a new prime minister for Iraq, because he could not find a consensus between the parties on the one hand and the Shiite authorities on the other hand, while each side refuses to concede." For his part, says political analyst Raad Al-Kaabi, that there is a problem in coordination between the authorities in the state, in terms of knowing the powers, they are acting from the logic of leadership. Al-Kaabi explained that the Prime Minister was supposed to attend the Davos Forum because he is the one who has broad powers according to the constitution compared to the President of the Republic.

The Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi submitted his resignation in November last year, but he is still exercising his duties within the caretaker government until the election of a new prime minister. Iraqi political analyst Hussein Allawi believes that despite Saleh discussing important files during the Davos conference, this will cause a state of tension in the Iraqi street in light of these difficult circumstances. "While attending the Davos conference, Saleh will focus on three main issues, which are the level of US-Iraqi relations, Iraq's membership in the international coalition against ISIS, and the promotion of investment and development opportunities in Iraq," Allawi said.

Allawi added that Saleh's travel comes in light of mass demands to choose a prime minister, who rejected all the names proposed by the political forces. It is likely that Saleh will not discuss the issue of choosing the expected Iraqi Prime Minister with the American President, but will come at the forefront of the issues to be discussed, the US military presence in Iraq and ways to combat terrorism, and the path of US-Iraqi relations in the economic and political fields.

Trump says Iraq happy with US troops

barham

Iraq likes what U.S. troops are doing there, PresidentDonald Trump said on Wednesday at talks with the Iraqi president about the future of the mission, which has been in doubt since a U.S. drone strike killed an Iranian commander in Baghdad.

Iraqi President Barham Salih's office said he and Trump had discussed reducing the number of foreign troops in Iraq at a meeting on the sidelines of an economic summit in Davos, Switzerland.

Asked before the meeting about the prospect of a U.S. withdrawal, Trump said: "We’re talking about a lot of different things and you’ll be hearing whatever we do. But they like what we’re doing and we like them, and we’ve had a very good relationship."

The United States has around 5,000 troops in Iraq, invited back into the country in 2014 by Baghdad to help fight against the Islamic State militant group.

Iraq Sunni leaders frightened by possible US troop pullout

us troops Sunni Iraqi leaders are now the most nervous about a possible withdrawal of American troops, considered a counterweight to Iran, AFP reported.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have boiled over onto Iraqi soil this month, with the US killing top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad and Iran striking back at an Iraqi base hosting American soldiers.

Furious at the US hit, Iraq's parliament held a vote on January 5 to oust all foreign troops, including some 5,200 American soldiers deployed alongside local forces.

All Kurdish and most Sunni MPs boycotted the session, despite threats by Shiite factions that the minorities would be considered "traitors" for backing the US presence.

Before the vote, speaker of parliament Mohammed Halbusi, a Sunni from the western Anbar province, made an impassioned appeal to MPs to reconsider.

"The decision we take now, we may not be able to amend in an hour's time," said Halbusi, addressing the mainly Shiite lawmakers in attendance.

"The US doesn't concern me. Iran doesn't concern me. Nothing concerns me as much as Iraq does," he said.

Both Iran and Iraq are Shiite-majority countries.

Tehran has cultivated close ties with Baghdad's ruling elite for decades.

It now exercises particularly strong sway through Iraq's Hashed al-Shaabi, a network of armed groups absorbed into the state security forces that has significant parliamentary representation.

Iran's growing clout has come at the expense of the US, which led the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein whose dictatorial Sunni-dominated regime oppressed Shiites.

That unleashed a deadly insurgency, with Sunni militias attacking US forces, before a broad Iraqi sectarian war erupted in 2006-2007 costing thousands of lives.

Iraqi Hezbollah threatens President Barham Salih

  •

20200122-20200122-20200122-barham-salih-

The conflict in Iraq is reaching a new level. After the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and the deputy commander of the Hashd al-Shaabi militia, groups close to Iran are now threatening Iraqi President Barham Salih. Hashd al-Shaabi is officially part of the Iraqi military.

"Meeting with Trump"

The Hezbollah Brigades (Kataib Hezbollah) are part of the Hashd al-Shaabi militia alliance. Their security officer Abu Ali Askeri has now threatened Salih that he would be chased out of Baghdad if he met with US President Donald Trump.

Is Iran behind this threat?

Political analyses from Iraq warn that this threat from a group belonging to the Iraqi military shows how serious the crisis in Iraq is and that this warning should actually be understood as a threat from Iran.

Al-Sadr calls for protests against foreign troops

In the wake of the US attacks, the Iraqi parliament had decided for the leave of all foreign troops from the country. However, both the USA and the anti-ISIS coalition had declared that they would not withdraw. The Shiite groups in Iraq, however, insist on the withdrawal. Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr has called for mass demonstrations against the US presence for January 24.
