Trump's Golf Trips Have Cost The American Taxpayer The Equivalent Of 296 Years Of POTUS Salary

Trump's Golf Trips To Mar-a-Lago Cost County $13.8 Million For Local Security

HuffPostJanuary 17, 2020, 7:03 AM EST

President Donald Trump’s 27 trips to play golf at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida have cost Palm Beach County $13.8 million for local security as of spring 2019, according to county documents.

U.S. taxpayers have already reimbursed the country $10 million for expenditures through September 2018, according to The Palm Beach Post. The country is still awaiting an additional $3.8 million for expenses racked up through October 2019.

The local figure is on top of $118 million in travel and federal security costs Trump has saddled U.S. taxpayers with for the 227-plus days he has spent during his presidency at his various golf resorts, according to a HuffPost analysis as of his winter vacation in December. That’s the equivalent of a 296 years of a presidential salary.

A chunk of those costs flows into Trump’s own pockets, as Secret Service agents and presidential support staff pay to stay and eat at his resorts while accompanying the president. The White House refuses to disclose records that would reveal how much the president is profiting from his own trips.

Local governments rack up their own separate costs when Trump travels to his golf resorts. He often spends warm-weather weekends and his summer vacation at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Most of the Palm Beach County money has paid for overtime for sheriff’s deputies. Local law enforcement officers escort Trump’s motorcade, man checkpoints, direct traffic, guard Mar-a-Lago and handle bomb-sniffing dogs.

From the time of Trump’s election in November 2016 to his inauguration in January 2017, local agencies spent nearly $1 million on his Mar-a-Lago visits, according to the newspaper.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is attempting to hide total Secret Service costs for Trump’s frequent getaways until after the presidential election, The Washington Post reported.

Trump often complained before and during his 2016 campaign about the time former President Barack Obama spent golfing. But Trump has spent three times the total number of days as Obama did at golf resorts at comparable times in their administrations. In addition, Obama’s far fewer trips were cheaper for the public because he often played at military bases within a short drive from the White House.

Unlike previous presidents, Trump has refused to divest from his businesses. He continues to promote and profit from his golf resorts on the taxpayer’s dime. Critics complain he is violating the Constitution’s domestic emoluments clause, which prohibits presidents from accepting benefits beyond salary from the federal or any state government.

Maybe he would stay in the White House and do more if he did not have a Congress that is fighting him and a Media that was not attacking him since before his election.

I would go do something more interesting than sit in the WH too if nobody wanted to play ball.

Hell, if I was POTUS I would go to my JCS and ask to go fire every single weapon we had in our inventory. Minus the nukes of course.

Doesn't he donate his annual salary to charity, or am I not recalling correctly?

Do you really believe that Trump giving his taxpayer funded salary to charity, while he pockets hundreds of times that much taxpayer funds by frequently golfing at his own clubs, is an equivalent exchange?  Keeping in mind this man trolled Obama for years and publicly stated he would never golf as pOTUS.  Honest question, hoping for an honest answer.

Joseph Curl covered the White House for the Washington Times during the George W. Bush administration, and says he still thinks about the former president every Christmas season because Bush always gave him a “spectacular gift.”

Before revealing what that gift was, Curl said it is important to understand just how many people are involved in every moment of a President’s day. He explained that “hundreds and hundreds of people,” from Secret Service agents and local police officers to journalists and White House staffers, are on the move every time the President is — no matter what day of the week or time of year, including holidays.

“If he went to Charlotte, North Carolina, to give a 30-minute speech on an airport tarmac, we went,” Curl said in the Washington Times. “Up at 4 a.m., an hourlong commute to Andrews Air Force Base, in place on the ground hours before POTUS landed, and there for hours and hours after he left — sometimes right through the evening news so network reporters could file live from the site.”

Curl said they went with the President to Texas every summer — “often for a month” — and in the winter, too. But even though it is the President’s prerogative to go and come whenever he pleases, Curl said President Bush gave the “hundreds and hundreds of people” accompanying him everywhere a very special gift each Christmas he was in office.

“In December, we never left Washington, D.C., until the day after Christmas. Never,” he recalled. “Mr. Bush and his wife, Laura, would always depart the White House a few days before the holiday and hunker down at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. After a few years, I asked a low-level White House staffer why.

“I still remember what she said: ‘So all of us can be with our families on Christmas.’”

“For me, that one-day delay was huge,” Curl continued. “My kids were 6 and 8 years old when Mr. Bush took office. When he went home to Prairie Chapel that last time in 2009, my girl was driving, the boy was 6 foot 1. But in the meantime, I was home for eight Christmas mornings, playing Santa, stoking the fire, mixing up hot chocolates.”

As with pretty much everything else, Curl said the Christmas tradition ended when President Obama took office.

“This president would never delay his trip to his island getaway,” said Curl. “He’s off every year well before Christmas. Hundreds and hundreds head off with him, leaving family behind. No Christmas at home. Instead, the Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. Nice, but not exactly home.”

Trump is definitely not George Bush. Trump left for Mar-A-Lago December 20th. Just as crappy as Obama.

Mine started out as a simple question on Trump donating, so talking apples to.apples, O's seemed to have done alright too, (didn't post entire clip, and don't know how much they donated) I do know they had minimal money before taking office (no pot to pee in or window to throw it out of) but being president certainly helped their finances:

Lol Obama ran up 100 mill in 8 years. Trump has ran that up in just 3 years and that’s just on golf. And he is doing it at his own properties. Yep no conflict of interest there. Making money off of the tax payers. What a gig!

There's a reason Mnuchin is doing everything he can to keep the Secret Service bills accumulated by Trump's trips sealed until after the November election.

Trump's golf resorts, like most of his businesses, are losing money hand over fist. He needs to use his position to create income.

B/A

Trump Hotels, Golf Clubs and Resorts Saw a $35 Million Income Drop in 2018

In all, business at his flagship properties was down about nine percent from last year’s totals.

President Donald Trump’s income from his hotels, resorts, and golf clubs declined substantially last year, according to newly filed financial disclosure forms.

Trump brought in about $352 million last year from 30 companies that own or manage those properties, down from nearly $387 million in 2017. That included seven-figure drops in income at some iconic Trump resorts. His Mar-a-Lago club brought in about $2.5 million less than it did in 2017. Income from the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles dropped by roughly $3 million. And the Trump Organization’s hotel management arm saw its income plummet by nearly $16 million, though its numbers for 2018 were more in line with those prior to Trump assuming the presidency.

Other Trump properties fared better. His Doral resort in Miami hiked its income by about $2.2 million in spite of internal concerns about declining residency reported by The Washington Post this week. Trump Turnberry, a golf resort in Scotland, saw income increase by $3 million. Trump’s hotel at Washington’s Old Post Office, just blocks from the White House, maintained an income of just over $40 million, second only to Doral in total income among the properties examined. And the company that manages Trump’s golf club in Dubai more than doubled its income, though it was still a small portion of the resort portfolio.

Overall, though, the president’s hospitality business appears to have taken a hit last year. And it suggests that the divisiveness of his presidency is impacting his business empire.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trumps-hotels-golf-clubs-and-resorts-saw-dollar35-million-income-drop-in-2018

President Trump’s company operates a city-owned golf course in the Bronx under a contract that makes it far easier for Trump to turn a profit. New York City agreed to pay Trump’s massive irrigation bills. And, for the first four years, it didn’t require Trump to pay a cent in rent on 192 acres.

Despite all that, Trump’s course lost money for the first time last year — running $122,000 in the red, according to a new filing with the city.

The loss for the past operating year, from April 2018 to March 2019, is the latest bad financial news for Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. It comes as other Trump golf courses — from his Doral resort in Florida to his expensive courses in Scotland and Ireland — have reported declining revenue, or outright losses, during Trump’s polarizing presidency.

Trump (and other presidents) Golf Count

Keeping track of Trump's golf outings

Trump vs Obama Golf Games

It’s been two years and 91 days that President Trump has been in office (we can’t believe it either!). We’ve spent these last two years tracking his golfing habits, and comparing them to the frequency of previous Presidents. But let’s be honest, most of you only care about one thing: Does Trump play more golf that Obama did while he was President? And whose golf habits cost the U.S. tax payer more?

The answer is yes. Trump has played 2.6 times more golf than Obama in his first 2 years and 91 days and has cost the tax payer an estimated $74 million more than Obama.

Looking for a great Trump gag gift idea? You won’t believe how hilarious this gift is… it will predict your future! Check it out here on Amazon.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases

We were initially hesitant to do an in depth analysis on Trump vs Obama’s golf games, because we felt that not enough time had passed to have a representative sample size when comparing the two.

Now that we are a little over the half way mark into Trump’s first term in office, we feel the time is right. Please note this article is as of the 2 year 91st day mark of Trump’s presidency. We plan to update this article in the future around the third year anniversary of Trump’s presidency. If you want to see Trump’s most up to date golf count check out our most popular post Trump Golf Statistics

In this post we will cover the following seven questions:

  1. Who has played more golf as of the 2 year 91st day mark of each respective presidency? ***Spoiler alert: Trump has spent 170 days at the golf course vs Obama’s 65***
  2. Is Trump projected to play more golf in his first term than Obama?
  3. If Trump is elected to a second term, how much golf could he play?
  4. Which day of the week did the Presidents play the most golf?
  5. Did Trump or Obama play more golf at private exclusive golf courses?
  6. What are Trump’s vs Obama’s favorite golf courses measured by the amount of rounds played?
  7. Who spent more tax payer money while golfing? ***Spoiler alert: Trump has cost the U.S. tax payer an estimated $97 million in just over two years vs Obama’s $23.4 million***

Who has played more golf, Trump or Obama?

As of now the answer is clear, President Trump has spent more time on the golf course and by a wide margin. Trump has been at the golf course 170 times in his first 821 days as president, Obama was at the course 65 times over the same period of time. Below is a graph measuring the cumulative presidential golfing count by number of days in office:

Trump vs Obama

Will Trump play more golf in his first term than Obama?

Yes, Trump is expected to be at the golf course 302 times in his first term in office measured on a run-rate basis. That is almost more than Obama’s total golf count over eight year which was 322 rounds played. Obama played golf 113 times during his first term in office.

We personally expect Trump’s golf count to be a bit lower than the projected 302 times, as we expect he’ll be campaigning frequently during the last year of his first term in office.

If Trump is elected to a second term, how much golf could he play?

If Trump wins the next election and serves a second term in office he is estimated to play 605 rounds of golf in total over his two terms, measured on a run-rate basis. Obama played around 322 rounds over the same period. Trump would still fall short of Dwight D. Eisenhower who play over 800 rounds and Woodrow Wilson who play north of 1,200 over their two terms. That being said, he would rank number three out of all the presidents over the past 100 years of presidential golfing history.

Which day of the week do Trump and Obama play the most golf?

Both Trump and Obama play golf primarily over weekends, which is to be expected as they’re working Monday through Friday. Interestingly, Trump plays almost equal amounts on Saturday and Sunday at 36 percent and 38 percent respectively. Obama played mostly on Sunday’s coming at about 48 percent of the times he golfed while president. Below we’ve included a breakout of Trump and Obama’s golf count and percent by day of the week:

Trump vs Obama by day

Did Trump or Obama play more golf at private exclusive courses?

President Trump greatly prefers his exclusive private golf courses over public or military courses. Trump has so far spent 98 percent of his golf outings at private courses where  Obama only spent 12 percent during the same time period. Trump has golfed 2 percent at public courses but they all have been at his own Trump branded golf courses. Obama spent 14 percent of his golf outings at public courses.

Obama greatly preferred golfing at military bases, coming at 74 percent. While we can’t confirm why he chose this route, our best guess is he did so because they were nearby and secured, therefore requiring less tax payer spending to make sure it was safe.

See below for a breakout of Trump and Obama golf outing percentages for public, private, and military golf courses:Trump vs Obama Golf Course

What are Trump’s vs Obama’s favorite golf courses, measured by the amount of rounds played?

So far, President Trump’s favorite course is a tie between Trump International West Palm Beach in Florida and Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey. He has golfed at both 58 times since becoming president. Over the same length of his first term in office, President Obama’s favorite course was Andrews Air Force Base where he golfed 26 times.

Since becoming president, Trump has played at eight different golf courses of which only two were not his own. Over the same period of time, Obama golfed at ten different golf courses, of which none were his own or Trump branded courses.

See below for lists of golf courses Trump and Obama played at in their first 2 years and 91 days of being President.

President Trump: Trump International West Palm Beach, Trump National: Bedminster, Potomac Falls, Jupiter and Los Angeles, as well as Trump Turnberry UK, Liberty National New Jersey, and Kasumigaseki Japan

President Obama: Andrews Air Force Base, Fort Belvoir, Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, Vineyard Golf Club, Farm Neck Golf Club, Luana Hills Country Club, Mid-Pacific Country Club, Mink Meadow Golf Club, The Grove Park Inn, and Army Navy Country Club

Who spent more tax payer money while golfing, Trump or Obama?

It’s really hard to track down exactly how much U.S. tax payers have spent to support Trump’s and Obama’s golfing. To estimate these costs, we are going to look at reputable sources and calculate our best guess estimate.

President Trump’s golfing habit has cost the U.S. tax payer an estimated $97,000,000 according to Trump Golf Count. The website estimates this cost by adding up the average cost of travel for the president estimated by The Washington Post.

To find out Trump’s latest golf outing cost, check out our newest article here.

President Obama’s golfing habit over the same time period cost U.S. tax payers an estimated $23,370,000.

So over the same period of time President Trump has cost the U.S. tax payer $73,630,000 more than Obama.

Obama’s estimate is calculated by assuming military bases have a 50 percent reduction in costs compared to private or public golf courses and that a private or public golf course costs $570,000 per presidential trip.

The $570,000 is estimated by taking the $97,000,000 of Trump golf costs / 170 Trump golf outings = approximately $570,000 per golf trip.

See the breakdown of Obama’s cost estimate calculation below:

Military Courses: 48 golf trips x $570,000 x 50% = $13,680,000

Private and Public: 17 golf trips x $570,000 = $9,690,000

Total: $13,680,000 + $9,690,000 = $23,370,000
