Iran put out a statement that they have responded to the killing of Soleimani in a proportionate manner and are not escalating the situation further, depending on how the US reacts.   The markets have calmed after the initial kneejerk reaction. So far no oil restrictions and oil shipments.

Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif
 January 08, 2020 6:28 am

Direct: Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said after a missile attack on Iraqi bases hosting American forces, "We do not seek escalation or war, but we will defend ourselves against any aggression."

"Iran has taken and concluded proportional measures in self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations," the Iranian foreign minister added in a tweet on his official account on the social networking site "Twitter".

This came after  the Iranian Revolutionary Guards adopted an attack with dozens of ballistic missiles on two military bases in Iraq,  hosting forces for the United States of America.

The Pentagon said it is working to assess the damage caused to its forces in Iraq in the wake of an Iranian ballistic missile attack.

The Pentagon stated that it is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting military and coalition personnel at Ein al-Assad and Erbil.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that, given the dynamic nature of the situation, "we will continue to provide updates as they become available."

He pointed out that in recent days, and in response to Iranian threats and actions,  the Ministry of Defense has taken all appropriate measures to protect its employees and partners .

According to local and Iranian international news agencies, the Iraqi Ain al-Assad airbase, which includes units of the American army, was bombed by ballistic missiles.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles at US bases in Iraq, warning Washington of the consequences of the response, according to Iranian news agencies.

The White House issued a statement saying that US President "Donald Trump" had been briefed on developments in the situation in Iraq.

The White House statement indicated that there are consultations between the US President and the National Security Team.

According to news agencies, the number of rockets has so far reached about 12 ballistic missiles.

And Iraq is witnessing security tensions, after the Pentagon announced last Friday morning, the killing of the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, and Abu Mahdi, the leader of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization, in a missile attack on a drone, targeting their car on the road to Baghdad International Airport.

Then the international reactions followed, as official news agencies in Iran announced an emergency meeting of the National Security Council headed by Supreme Leader Khamenei to respond to the attack.

The Iraqi government condemned the attack and considered it an attack on sovereignty, until the Security Media Cell in Iraq announced, on Saturday, that a number of rockets had landed in the center of the capital Baghdad and Balad Air Base.

3n1, don’t hold your breath waiting on al-Sadr to condemn an order Iran out of Iraq, hell he’s one of them. I’m curious to see what happens this Friday since the protestors gave the president until then to have a new PM or they were neutralizing the government...

Okay  - - I'm going to waaaaay out on a limb here. Iran says " it's finished with their response " . . .a rather odd statement.

Trump says " Everything is Fine "  " assessing the damage "

Might this be a face saving Iranian strategy; being " allowed " to lob a few missiles at a couple of Air Bases ( with no apparent damage or loss of USA personnel's lives ), then pull back from their aggressive stance ? This is an interesting Chess Game Here.

Iran will never play nice but they must know that escalating this situation will result in full US retaliation against Iran & political suicide which could bring about the downfall of the regime.

These people want their control & power more than incurring the Wrath & Hell Fire of the USA. They were/are very aware of what we did to Iraq and they certainly know that same fate awaits them if they go too far. Perhaps a very slow " cooling off period "  ?

What tomorrow brings, we'll see soon enough.

Where did Iran attack US forces in Iraq?

Targets were two airbases, including Ain al-Asad, which was attacked previously by ISIL in 2016.

Iran said early on Wednesday that it had fired more than a dozen rockets at two Iraqi military bases hosting American troops amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The missiles targeted two bases, Ain al-Asad in Anbar province, and a base in Erbil

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that it conducted the operation at the same early morning hour that the US killed Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani on Friday.

Iran has vowed to take revenge against the US following the killing of Soleimani.

The general was buried early on Wednesday in his hometown of Kerman, after a deadly a deadly stampede at his funeral procession on Tuesday. People across Iran turned out to pay their respects at funeral processions that took place during three days of official mourning.

According to Iran's Fars news agency, Fateh-313 missiles hit Ain al-Asad air base, which is located 233km (144 miles) west of Baghdad.

The Fateh-313 surface-to-surface missile was launched in August 2015 and has a range of 500km (310 miles).

According to the US Central Command, which oversees the US military in the region, 15 missiles were fired, with 10 hitting the Asad base in Anbar, and one at a location near Erbil airport. Four of the missiles reportedly failed.

Ain al-Asad was the second largest American airbase in Iraq established during the US occupation of the country between 2003 and 2011.

In 2016, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) also launched attacks at the base, which then housed several hundred US troops and advisers training the Iraqi army after the US withdrawal in 2011.

The second US base in Erbil has not been unnamed, but it is close to the airport in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.

At its peak, there were an estimated 150,000 American troops stationed in Iraq. Most of them left in 2011.

In 2016, following the advance of ISIL, the number of US troops increased once again to 5,000, with an additional 1,000 more repositioned from Syria, bringing the total to about 6,000 as of October 2019.

Then following the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad on New Year's Eve, US President Donald Trump ordered the immediate deployment of an additional 750 troops to Iraq to secure the diplomatic compound.

In recent days, an additional 3,000 troops were deployed to the Middle East, but it is unknown how many of them were sent directly to Iraq.

Agreed . . . can't help but think something else at play here to pull this back before Iran commits to a retaliatory act killing USA Troops that will invite a total, deadly all out response leading to this regimes demise.

If that doesn't happen now, it will no doubt take place " in the near future " The Iranian regime is full of " Dead Men Walking." They're  just not aware of that fact . . . YET.:tiphat:

Instant missile launch from an Iranian base (Iran News Agency)

The chronology of the Iranian attack on American targets in Iraq

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced, on Tuesday evening, that it had carried out a missile attack on Ain al-Assad base in Anbar, western Iraq, and the "silk" base in Erbil, and both included American forces.

The Pentagon confirmed the news and said that Iran launched more than 10 ballistic missiles from Iranian soil at at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US-led coalition forces. "We are working on a preliminary damage assessment," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement, adding that the two targeted bases were Ein al-Assad Air Force Base and another base in the city of Erbil. Shortly after, Iran launched a second wave of bombing at Ain Al-Assad base. Sirens sounded, American helicopters were seen flying over Ein al-Assad base, and full alert was activated after rockets fell on the base. The Revolutionary Guards issued a statement claiming that it targeted the al-Assad base and another base in Erbil, in retaliation for the killing of Qasim Soleimani in the American operation, last Friday, in Baghdad. After Tehran adopted the missile attack, the White House announced that it was aware of the targeting of its forces in Iraq and that President Donald Trump was closely monitoring the situation and was consulting with his national security team. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived at the White House after the attacks. The American chief of staff has arrived at the White House. A spokesman for German forces announces that none of the German soldiers stationed in Erbil were affected by the attack. CNN announced that there were no casualties among the American soldiers, and stated that a number of Iraqis were wounded in the attacks.  Washington prohibits American civil aviation from flying over Iraq, Iran, Gulf waters and the Sea of Oman. The attack on the Silk Base in Erbil has not recorded any casualties. Trump comments on the losses at the military base in Iraq: "Everything is fine so far. Our army is the strongest and most equipped in the world." Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif: Iran has taken and completed equal measures in the framework of self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations. US Department of State: Pompeo briefed Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan government, on Iranian missile attacks.

Screams of Iraqi soldiers .. Video from "Ain al-Assad" for missile targeting

January 08, 2020

VIDEO LINK

Iraqi soldiers in Ain al-Assad

A video, posted by activists on social media, showed people who said they were Iraqi soldiers at Ain Al-Assad base the moment they were targeted by ballistic missiles fired from Iran.

The video monitors rockets on the base in the Al-Baghdadi district of Anbar, amid the screams of soldiers who hear some say that rockets landed inside the base.

The video hears the screams of the soldiers and the sound of huge explosions, without information on casualties among the soldiers deployed at the base.

The Pentagon announced that Iran fired at dawn Wednesday "more than 12 missiles" at the base of Ain al-Assad and another base in Erbil, indicating that he was in the process of assessing the damage and studied ways to "respond" to this strike.

US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that, on Tuesday evening, "Iran fired more than 12 ballistic missiles at American and coalition forces in Iraq."

He added, "It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases used by the American and coalition forces in Ein al-Assad and Erbil."

The statement indicated that the Pentagon is conducting a "preliminary assessment of the losses" and is studying a "response" to the attack. There were no immediate reports of human casualties in either base.

"In recent days, in response to Iran's threats and actions, the Department of Defense has taken all appropriate measures to protect our individuals and partners," Hoffman said.

He added that "these two bases were on high alert because there are indications that the Iranian regime is planning to attack our forces and interests in the region."

Hoffman emphasized that the United States will take "all necessary measures to protect and defend American individuals, our partners, and our allies in the region."

The Iranian missile attack comes after Tehran vowed to "respond" to an American strike with a drone plane in which the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Corps, Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the Iraqi crowd, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed in Baghdad last Friday.

For his part, the White House said in a statement that President Donald Trump had taken note of the attack and was "closely monitoring the situation and holding meetings with his security team."

Iran adopted the ballistic missile attack, and the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement that it fired "dozens of surface-to-surface missiles at the air base ... known as Ein al-Assad" in Anbar Province.
