Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday defended the U.S. military's presence in Iraq shortly before the Middle Eastern nation's parliament voted to demand that foreign forces there withdraw following the death of an Iranian general in an American airstrike.

"As for the activity today with respect to Iraq, we've been in their country. We've been supporting Iraqi sovereignty. We've been continuing to take down the terrorist threat against the Iraqi people," Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday," just hours after Iawmakers in Baghdad convened an emergency session.

Iraq has become embroiled in the escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran, with tensions reaching new heights last week after President Donald Trump ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's elite paramilitary forces. He was killed Jan. 3 in Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi on Sunday criticized that strike as a "political assassination," according to The Washington Post, and urged parliament to take "urgent measures" to force the exit of American troops. His nation’s lawmakers voted Sunday in favor of a resolution that calls for ending foreign military presence in the country.

Pompeo dismissed Abdul-Mahdi — who in November submitted his resignation to parliament amid mass anti-government protests — as the "acting prime minister," and charged that he was "under enormous threats from the very Iranian leadership that it is that we are pushing back against."

"We are confident that the Iraqi people want the United States to continue to be there to fight the counterterror campaign, and we'll continue to do all the things we need to do to keep America safe," Pompeo said.

Asked about potential parliamentary request that U.S. forces depart Iraq, Pompeo said the administration would "have to take a look at what we do when the Iraqi leadership in government makes a decision."

But he added that "the American people should know we'll make the right decision," and will "take actions that frankly the previous administration refused to take to do just that."

Shortly after Pompeo's appearance on Fox, Iraq’s parliament formally voted to expel American service members from the country, according to the Associated Press — approving a resolution aimed at forcing the U.S. to withdraw roughly 5,000 soldiers stationed across Iraq.

Thanks 3n1, I agree with you - Sadr should have been taken out long ago, but for a while he represented the interests of the Iraqi people. He's always hated the US and didn't want us there, but was conciliatory towards us when ISIS was a threat. But over time he has been influenced more and more by Iran, and is once again demanding our removal...as expected..!

Yup. Pull all US forces out, as soon as Iraq repays the BILLIONS in US Dollars, compensation for the loss of lives to kick Saddam out. Then add to the bill the BILLIONS that Iraq politicians have stolen since 2003. We should let ISIS move forward when they were at the gate of Baghdad several years ago. Those spineless ingrates. Iranian snipers have killed 500+ peaceful protesters since October 1st. I don't see GOI up in arms over THAT. Those fools make me sick.

Thinking out loud - Is it possible that the Kurds and Sunnis did not show up to vote for pulling out U.S. forces from Iraq, because the vote cannot pass without them?

I'm thinking the Shiites outnumber them in Parliament, so if they voted they would lose.  But if they don't vote at all, the measure can't pass.

Am I thinking correctly?

"Tens of thousands of Iraqis including Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi, political leaders and clerics attended a mass ceremony on Saturday to honour Soleimani and the other victims."

we will not see RV until Iranian influence is out of the GOI. (Maliki, Mahdi, Sadr, etc.)

Good news: I believe it will be this year.

COUNCIL OF REPRESENTATIVES VOTES TO EXPEL FOREIGN TROOPS FROM IRAQ

Ends security agreement with Coalition forces

SULAIMANI — The Council of Representatives on Sunday (January 5) voted to end the presence of foreign troops in the country, just two days after the US killed a top Iranian commander and Iraqi militia commander in a strike in Baghdad.

The Iraqi Parliament held its extraordinary session to consider a resolution asking the government to expel US troops from the country.

The Council of Representatives decided to end a security agreement with the US-led Coalition Forces supporting the federal government in the ISIS fight.

NRT Digital Media reporter Omed Mohammed said that caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi arrived in the parliament building on Sunday afternoon (January 5), indicating the seriousness of the session.

Mohammed said the Kurdish and Sunni blocs had not participated in the session.

Abdul Mahdi addressed the lawmakers saying the federal government does not support system" rel="">support US sanctions on Iran but it will not also be an enemy to the US.

“The US drones and helicopters are flying in the Iraqi skies without asking for permission from the federal government,” he said.

Abdul Mahdi also said Baghdad had called on the US to send more troops to protect the US embassy in Baghdad, where Iran-backed Shia militia supporters gathered to condemn US strikes on Hashd al-Shaabi.

Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was killed in a US strike on Friday, had convinced the militia supporters to withdraw from US embassy compound vicinity during the protests, he added.

“Those attacks had no legal basis,” Abdul Mahdi said, referring to the US strike that killed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Chief Qassem Soleimani and Muhandis.

Abdul Mahdi further said that Soleimani was scheduled to meet him in his visit to Baghdad.

“We are determined to make a national decision about that matter. We have two options, one to end the presence of foreign troops in Iraq in a speedy measure, or two to return to the previous decisions of the previous of this cabinet which called for the prevention of foreign troops’ presence in Iraq, just to stay to train Iraqi forces for Daesh fight,” he added, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State (ISIS).

Abdul Mahdi noted that the foreign troops must not carry out military acts on Iraqi soil. The government of Iraq should reduce the numbers of the foreign troops in Iraq.

The Iraqi caretaker PM called on the lawmakers to approve the first option that calls for the end of the presence of the foreign troops in Iraq.

Abdul Mahdi said Iraq is able to preserve its sovereignty without the presence of the foreign troops.

NRT reporter said a clause was added to a proposal that calls for the end of the presence of foreign troops. Lawmakers voted to approve the clause stating that weapons should be only at the hand of the government.

This is a statement by a bunch of people who will soon be voted out of the GOI.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s council of representatives held an extraordinary session on Sunday to vote on a resolution for the Iraqi government to expel American and foreign military troops in Iraq.

The parliamentary session began on Sunday afternoon, with 168 parliament members participating without the presence of Kurdsand Sunni Arabs.

The session was held upon the request of Shia parliament members.

Lawmakers approved a draft bill to push US troops out of Iraq, and a parliamentary session to vote on the bill was scheduled for Saturday (Jan.11).

The resolution includes a decision to cancel any request for military assistance from the International Coalition against the Islamic State, to end the presence of foreign troops on Iraqi soil, to prevent foreign forces using Iraqi airspace, to submit a formal complaint to the United Nations and the Security Council against the US, and to restrict the military and arms to the state only, a statement following the end of the session read.

The development comes after an American drone killed the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force Qasim Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the leader of the Tehran-aligned Kata’ib Hizbollah militia in Iraq.

Iraqi officials have roundly condemned the US strike, which took place just outside the Baghdad International Airport after Soleimani met with Muhandis. Days earlier, Iraqi officials had condemned militiamen and supporters after they attempted to storm the US embassy in the Iraqi capital, torching parts of it.

Outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi attended the parliament session on Sunday, where he expressed his grief at the loss of the two leaders. “The only way for foreign forces to remain in Iraq is to train Iraqi forces and nothing further,” the Iraqi prime minister said.

Abdul Mahdi also explained that the US-Iran struggle has affected Iraq and that Baghdad has alerted Washington about the reactions of conducting military attacks in Iraq.

“We have constantly requested the US not to violate Iraq’s sovereignty,” he stated. “It is in the interest of both Iraq and America to end the US’ military presence in Iraq.”

“The Iraqi government needs to implement a time frame to reduce foreign troops in Iraq,” Abdul Mahdi added.

Caught in the middle of two nations with which they must deal, many officials from both the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region have called for restraint and calm, stressing that Iraq must not be an arena for settling international scores.

Pompeo: The Iraqis want us to stay, and Abdul Mahdi is just a resigned prime minister
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed Washington's full confidence that the people of Iraq want American forces to remain on their soil, regardless of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.

Pompeo said, via "Fox News" channel, today, Sunday, that the Iraqi caretaker head, Adel Abdul Mahdi, who asked the House of Representatives to set a timetable for removing all foreign forces from the country, is just "a resigned prime minister" and "acting prime minister." And "faces massive threats from the leadership of Iran," he said.

He added: "We are convinced that the Iraqi people want the United States to remain to continue its campaign against terrorism, and we will continue to do everything necessary to ensure America's security."

Pompeo declined to respond to a question whether Washington would do it if Iraq, as a sovereign state, asks it to withdraw its forces from its lands, saying: "The American people should know that we will take the right decision, and we will take steps that the previous administration refused to take."

Within minutes of Pompeo's statement, the House of Representatives approved the government's mandate to end the presence of foreign forces on the country's territory.

Nineveh deputy: We will not vote to cancel the security agreement with America .. We will be the most affected

Baghdad - Iraq today:

The governor of Nineveh Governorate, Hassan Al-Alo, announced his refusal to cancel the security agreement with the United States, indicating that it is not logical to vote to cancel the agreement and ISIS is still at the gates of our provinces.

"Our personal stance is not with the abolition of the agreement, and we will not attend the session for many reasons," Al-Alou said in a statement, noting that "everyone knows that the most resistant party to the American occupation are the Sunni Arabs and the Sunni Turkmen. Everyone who was resisting the occupation and the first to vote to bring out the American forces are the Sunni Arab deputies in the second round and I was voting on them at the time and with complete conviction despite all the pressures we were exposed to at that time. "

He continued: "We were advised at the time that you will regret that we voted to remove the American forces. Indeed, after the Americans left, our provinces turned into a hotbed of terrorism until they fell into the hands of ISIS, we really regretted and pleaded with the Americans and others for the purpose of returning and saving us from ISIS terrorism."

He pointed out that "the Americans were reinstated with a new security agreement for the purpose of removing ISIS, so today it is not logical to vote to cancel the agreement and ISIS is still at the doors of our provinces." To our country.

Al-Alou added: "This is our opinion, and the partners should appreciate our situation and respect our opinions, and we will not allow our will to be taken away from us, whatever the circumstances."

100% correct. This is the reality of the situation regardless of what Iran supporters or Democrats (but I repeat myself) say.

Just another thought.

These morons can get together for an emergency meeting to agree to kick out the hand that feeds and clothes them, but when it comes to meeting to take care of their own people...Good luck with that.

Hoshyar Zebari: Parliament's decision to remove foreign forces is not binding

Baghdad / Obelisk: The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, on Sunday, January 5, 2020, considered that the parliament’s decision to end the foreign presence in Iraq was "not binding", pointing out that the issue was brought up for further talks.

Zebari said in a tweet to him on "Twitter", that "the parliament session today was seeking to end the presence of US forces and the international coalition in Iraq," noting that it "ended with a non-binding political decision."

Zebari said, "The Kurdish and Sunni Arab representatives boycotted the meeting," explaining that "no parliamentary legislation was issued and the issue came up for more political talks."

Today, Sunday, the Iraqi Council of Representatives voted unanimously on a parliamentary decision that includes obliging the Iraqi government to cancel the request for assistance submitted by it to the international coalition to fight ISIS, and the Iraqi government's commitment to end the presence of any foreign forces on Iraqi soil, and to prevent it from using Iraqi lands, water, and air for any reason. The Iraqi government is also committed to confining arms to the state.

The decision included the Iraqi government represented by the Foreign Minister urgently going to the United Nations and the International Security Council and filing a complaint against the United States of America for its violations of and serious breaches of the sovereignty and security of Iraq, and the Iraqi government to conduct investigations at the highest levels to know the causes of the American bombing and inform the House of Representatives of the results within seven Days from the date of this decision, which is implemented from the date of voting on it, in addition to the possibility of proceeding with the legislation legislation to abolish the strategic framework agreement between Iraq and the United States of America.
