An American newspaper warns of a catastrophic situation if Iraq’s exception to sanctions on Iran ends

Washington is currently working to tighten pressure on Tehran and besiege the Iranian strategy relentlessly by tightening the screws on its armed arms in the region.

Possible possibilities in Iraq according to the rule of action and reaction :
-The first possibility revolves around the continuation of attacks and counterattacks, but to a limited extent, without turning it into a full-scale US-Iranian war.
-The second possibility revolves around a phased political agreement of the American administration through the Iraqi government with Iran to calm things down and neutralize the country.
-The third possibility is based on the escalation of clashes to the extent that Washington will carry out in the coming months a wide operation to eradicate the Iranian military force in Iraq.

BAGHDAD: Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, was killed in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport Friday, Iraqi television and three Iraqi officials said.
The strike also killed Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, or PMF, the officials said.
Their deaths are a potential turning point in the Middle East and are expected to draw severe retaliation from Iran and the forces it backs in the Middle East against Israel and American interests.
The PMF blamed the United States for an attack at Baghdad International Airport Friday.
There was no immediate comment from the US or Iran.
A senior Iraqi politician and a high-level security official confirmed to the Associated Press that Soleimani and Al-Muhandis were among those killed in the attack. Two militia leaders loyal to Iran also confirmed the deaths, including an official with the Kataeb Hezbollah, which was involved in the attack on the US Embassy this week.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Al-Muhandis had arrived to the airport in a convoy to receive Soleimani whose plane had arrived from either Lebanon or Syria. The airstrike occurred as soon as he descended from the plane to be greeted by Al-Muhandis and his companions, killing them all.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject and because they were not authorized to give official statements.
The senior politician said Soleimani’s body was identified by the ring he wore.
Soleimani had been rumored dead several times, including in a 2006 airplane crash that killed other military officials in northwestern Iran and following a 2012 bombing in Damascus that killed top aides of embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad. More recently, rumors circulated in November 2015 that Soleimani was killed or seriously wounded leading forces loyal to Assad as they fought around Syria’s Aleppo.
Earlier Friday, an official with an Iran-backed paramilitary force said that seven people were killed by a missile fired at Baghdad International Airport, blaming the United States.
The official with the group known as the Popular Mobilization Forces said the dead included its airport protocol officer, identifying him as Mohammed Reda.
A security official confirmed that seven people were killed in the attack on the airport, describing it as an airstrike. Earlier, Iraq’s Security Media Cell, which releases information regarding Iraqi security, said Katyusha rockets landed near the airport’s cargo hall, killing several people and setting two cars on fire.
It was not immediately clear who fired the missile or rockets or who was targeted. There was no immediate comment from the US
The attack came amid tensions with the United States after a New Year’s Eve attack by Iran-backed militias on the US Embassy in Baghdad. The two-day embassy attack which ended Wednesday prompted President Donald Trump to order about 750 US soldiers deployed to the Middle East.
The breach at the embassy followed US airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The US military said the strikes were in retaliation for last week’s killing of an another site in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that the US blamed on the militia.
US officials have suggested they were prepared to engage in further retaliatory attacks in Iraq.
“The game has changed,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday, telling reporters that violent acts by Iran-backed Shiite militias in Iraq — including the rocket attack on Dec. 27 that killed one American — will be met with US military force.
He said the Iraqi government has fallen short of its obligation to defend its American partner in the attack on the US embassy.
The developments also represent a major downturn in Iraq-US relations that could further undermine US influence in the region and American troops in Iraq and weaken Washington’s hand in its pressure campaign against Iran.

This is all over the news on TV, but all I can think of was when Obama said Bin Laden was killed,

and then immediately had him buried at sea.   I was always suspicious of that.

I hope they have some proof of Solemani's death.

I saw a new article with a picture posted of his hand with a ring and that he was identified by the ring on his hand.

Thanks, Showell83, but I'd like to see his face, not his hand.

Maybe I'm too suspicious, but it could be a plant, and this would give Iran a reason to start a war.

I just don't trust them.

Iran's Qassem Soleimani killed in 'US raid' at Baghdad airport
Pre-dawn attack also killed Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a major escalation of regional tensions.

General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite al-Quds force, has been reported killed alongside six others following a US air attack at Baghdad's international airport.

Iraqi officials and the state television reported that aside from Soleimani, Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was also killed in the attack.

Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) umbrella grouping of Iran-backed militias, also confirmed the deaths of Soleimani and Muhandis.

Two unnamed US officials told Reuters news agency that the US carried out the targeted air raids.

Sources from the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) earlier told Al Jazeera that the rockets destroyed two vehicles carrying "high-profile guests", who had arrived at the airport and were being escorted by a PMF official.

Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid, reporting from Baghdad, said the incident appeared to be a targeted raid.

Our correspondent said that the deaths are a major turning point in Iraq and the entire Middle East.

He said that the region has already been "on edge" since the US strike on PMF forces near Iraq's border with Syria, and the attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday.

"This is a major blow on the relationship between the United States and the Iraqi government," bin Javaid said. "It is a very precarious situation on which this significant development is taking place."

In a statement on social media, US Senator Chris Murphy, an opposition member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, warned that the incident could set off "a potential massive regional war".

In an interview with Al Jazeera, former US Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb said "there is no doubt" that the US wanted to target Soleimani "for a while".

Witnesses in the area also told Al Jazeera that they could hear the sounds of sirens and helicopters in the air following the pre-dawn attack.

The area of the incident has been cordoned off, authorities told Al Jazeera, but the international airport remains in operation.

Our correspondent added that the attack took place near the base of the US-led coalition forces.

The attack occurred amid tensions with the US after an Iran-backed militia and other protesters breached the United States's Embassy in Baghdad.

The attack at the embassy on New Year's Eve was in response to a deadly US airstrike that killed 25 forces of the PMF, also known as the Hashd al-Shaabi group.

The head of Iran’s elite Quds Force was killed in a US rocket strike at Baghdad Airport on Thursday evening in a military action that’s expected to draw swift retaliation from Iran, the Pentagon said.

Gen. Qassim Soleimani perished in a rocket attack, the Defense Department confirmed in a statement, referring to him as the leader of a terrorist organization.

“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

They added that Soleimani was planning attacks on American diplomats and soldiers in Iraq when he was killed.

“General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more,” the Pentagon added in the statement.

“He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months — including the attack on December 27th — culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel,” they added.

The Pentagon said he also approved the attack on the US embassy last week.

President Trump has not commented on the strike, but tweeted a photo of an American flag Thursday night.
