An early-morning strike hit the Baghdad International Airport perimeter, near the air cargo terminal, the Iraqi government said Friday.

The attack, which set two cars ablaze, apparently occurred at about 1 a.m. Social media users posted hearing the explosions, then the sounds of military aircraft.

The Iraqi defense ministry’s security information cell confirmed the strike about 45 minutes later, posting photos of the burning vehicles on its Facebook page and attributing the damage to a rocket attack.

Later, security sources told local media a strike hit two vehicles, killing Mohammed Redha, a senior member of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units — an umbrella group that includes Iran-backed Shiite militias with close ties to Iran and other militias that have fought the Islamic State group since 2014. Other PMU members and “guests” were also killed, the PMU said.

Initial reports were unclear on whether there was a rocket attack and a separate counter-strike targeting the vehicles.

The U.S.-led coalition did not immediately respond to an inquiry on the matter. The reported strike occurred hours after Defense Secretary Mark Esper urged Iran and its proxies to end malign behavior in the region, where tensions between Washington and Tehran have been rising since May.

“We will not accept continued attacks against our personnel and forces in the region,” Esper said in a statement on Thursday. “Attacks against us will be met with responses in the time, manner, and place of our choosing.”

The Pentagon has blamed a PMU militia called Kataeb Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization strongly linked with Iran, for a series of rocket strikes targeting bases housing U.S. troops throughout the country. As of Saturday, there had been 11 such rocket attacks since October — including two on an installation located next to the Baghdad airport in early December. Those attacks wounded several Iraqi troops, prompting U.S. officials to call on Iraq to do more to prevent them and warning of decisive action if such attacks continued.

Last Friday, a rocket strike on the K1 base in Kirkuk left an American civilian contractor dead, and six service members wounded — four Americans and two Iraqis.

After that deadly attack, the U.S. launched a series of airstrikes on Sunday targeting bases in Iraq and Syria used by Kataeb Hezbollah.

Esper also ordered a contingent of some 750 infantry troops from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division deployed to the Middle East in response to the increased threat in the region, adding to about 14,000 sent since last summer. More would be on standby to deploy in the coming days, he said.

Qassem Soleimani, the powerful head of Iran’s Quds Force, was killed in an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport, Iraqi TV and three Iraqi officials officials said Friday

The officials said the strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Soleimani has for years been seen as the architect of much of Iran’s malign activities in the Middle East, including attempts to place a foothold in Syria and rocket attacks on Israel, making him one of Israel and the US’s most sought-after targets.

His killing was announced hours after missiles struck at least two cars at Baghdad’s International Airport, killing at least seven people, according to Iraqi officials.

Iraqi TV: Iran’s Gen. Soleimani killed in Baghdad strike

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA15 minutes ago

Baghdad (AP) — Iraqi TV and three Iraqi officials said Friday that Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, has been killed in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport.

The officials said the strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Their deaths are a potential turning point in the Middle East and are expected to draw severe retaliation from Iran and the forces it backs in the Middle East against Israel and American interests.

The PMF blamed the United States for an attack at Baghdad International Airport Friday.

There was no immediate comment from the U.S. or Iran.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

An official with an Iran-backed paramilitary force said Friday that seven people were killed by a missile fired at Baghdad International Airport, blaming the United States.

The official with the group known as the Popular Mobilization Forces said the dead included its airport protocol officer, identifying him as Mohammed Reda.

A security official confirmed that seven people were killed in the attack on the airport, describing it as an airstrike. Earlier, Iraq’s Security Media Cell, which releases information regarding Iraqi security, said Katyusha rockets landed near the airport’s cargo hall, killing several people and setting two cars on fire.

It was not immediately clear who fired the missile or rockets or who was targeted. There was no immediate comment from the U.S.

The security official said the bodies of those killed in the airport attack Friday were burned and difficult to identify. The official added that Reda may have been at the airport to pick up a group of “high-level” visitors who had arrived from a neighboring country. He declined to provide more information.

The attack came amid tensions with the United States after a New Year’s Eve attack by Iran-backed militias on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The two-day embassy attack which ended Wednesday prompted President Donald Trump to order about 750 U.S. soldiers deployed to the Middle East.

The breach at the embassy followed U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the strikes were in retaliation for last week’s killing of an another site in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that the U.S. blamed on the militia.

U.S. officials have suggested they were prepared to engage in further retaliatory attacks in Iraq.

“The game has changed,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday, telling reporters that violent acts by Iran-backed Shiite militias in Iraq — including the rocket attack on Dec. 27 that killed one American — will be met with U.S. military force.

He said the Iraqi government has fallen short of its obligation to defend its American partner in the attack on the U.S. embassy.

The developments also represent a major downturn in Iraq-U.S. relations that could further undermine U.S. influence in the region and American troops in Iraq and weaken Washington’s hand in its pressure campaign against Iran.

Baghdad rocket attack kills Iranian military leaders including Gen. Qassim Soleimani, reports say

Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior fellow for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, weighs in.

At least three rockets were fired at Baghdad International Airport Friday killing at least seven people, including Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force, according to multiple reports early Friday.

Soleimani is the military mastermind whom Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had deemed equally as dangerous as  Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who died in a strike by U.S.-led forces in October.

The strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, three Iraqi officials told The Associated Press. Iraqi TV reported the deaths as well.

Local reporters had suggested that pro-Iran military leaders may have been targeted, but officials have not yet confirmed all of the dead and who may have been behind the attack. An official with an Iran-backed paramilitary group known as the Popular Mobilization Forces told The Associated Press one of the victims was its airport protocol officer, identifying him as Mohammed Reda.

Iraq’s Security Media Cell, which released information regarding Iraqi security, said the three Katyusha rockets landed near the cargo hall.

Iraqi security also said two cars were on fire.

The nighttime attack occurred amid tensions with the U.S. after an Iran-backed militia attacked the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, which was targeted Tuesday by angry mobs who were protesting recent U.S. airstrikes.

The two-day siege outside of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad came to an end Wednesday afternoon after dozens of pro-Iran militiamen and their supporters withdrew from the compound.

U.S. EMBASSY IN BAGHDAD FIRE DAMAGE SEEN IN NEW PHOTOS FOLLOWING MILITANTS' ATTACK

The crisis started early Tuesday, when, in an orchestrated assault, hundreds of protesters stormed the embassy compound, one of the most heavily fortified U.S. diplomatic missions in the world.

President Trump, who on Tuesday night vowed that the situation "will not be a Benghazi" -- a pointed reference to the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya on the Obama administration's watch, ordered deployment of about 750 U.S. soldiers to the Middle East.

The embassy attack, one of the worst in recent memory, followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed group, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the airstrikes were retaliation for last week's killing of an another site in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base, which the U.S. blamed on the militia.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper reacted on Thursday to the U.S. Embassy attack in Iraq earlier this week, saying that it's time for Iran to start "acting like a normal country.”

“We are there in Iraq working with our Iraqi partners to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS,” Esper said on “America’s Newsroom” on Thursday.

“Through the president's direction, we were able to physically defeat the caliphate that remains physically defeated, if you will," he added. "And now our aim is to deter further Iranian bad behavior that has been going on now for over 40 years. It's time that Iran started acting like a normal country.”

Qasim Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis were killed by strikes near Baghdad airport

January 03, 2020

Soleimani was the official of Iran's arms in the region.

Soleimani was the official of Iran's arms in the region.

The official Iraqi channel confirmed the killing of the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, and the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, by the shelling that targeted a convoy near Baghdad International Airport.

The channel said that the two men were killed in the bombing that targeted a convoy in the vicinity of Baghdad airport, after sources had reported that eight people were killed in the strikes, including Iranians, Iraqis and Lebanese.

A page loyal to the crowd on Facebook said that "the unknown bombing ... targeted two cars on the road to Baghdad International Airport," referring to the killing of Muhammad Ridha al-Jabri, which is what he calls "the honorary circle of the popular crowd."

The page, which is called "Clean Brotherhood," added that "Al-Jabri was part of a delegation that welcomed large figures from Iran and Lebanon, and during their exit from the airport, the targeting took place."

As for the Iraqi political researcher, Hashem Al-Hashemi, he wrote on his Twitter page that "sources close to the popular crowd confirm that an American plane targeted the leader of the popular crowd, Mohammed Reda Al-Jabri and two of his companions ..".

He added that the targets are "from the honorary circle of the popular crowd, Muhammad Reza (Al-Jabri), Hassan Resistance, and Muhammad Al-Shaibani, and 3 guests of Iranian nationality."

And quoted by AFP, Iraqi security sources, unnamed, that the fall of the rockets near Baghdad Airport resulted in the "eight dead", but did not reveal their identities.

This comes two days after the Popular Mobilization militia attacked the American embassy in Baghdad following American air strikes on bases belonging to the militia of the Hezbollah Brigades, Iraq, which had targeted an Iraqi army camp that includes American soldiers.

On Thursday, US Defense Secretary Mark Asper said he expected the pro-Iranian factions in Iraq to launch new attacks on US forces, and said "we will make them regret" them.

"We have been witnessing provocations for months," he said, adding that if Washington learned of new attacks in preparation, "we will take precautions to protect American forces and to protect American lives."

The US Chief of Staff, General Mark Millie, for his part, confirmed that the US embassy in Baghdad is well protected.

Members of the Hashd militia, headed by the Hezbollah Brigades, Iraq, stormed the Green Zone on Tuesday, attacking the American embassy in Baghdad.

American strikes targeted bases of the Iraqi pro-Iranian Hezbollah in northern Iraq, killing 25 fighters.

The demonstrators withdrew, on Wednesday, from the vicinity of the American embassy after two days of violence, but the target party threatened revenge.

The American chief of staff said that the attack by the Hezbollah Brigades on the Kirkuk base was aimed at "killing Americans," adding that "firing 31 shells is not a warning shooting, but rather its aim is to cause damage and death."

Esber pointed out that all of this "changed the data (...) and we are ready to do everything necessary to defend our employees, interests and partners in the region."

In response to a question about what the Americans are waiting for from the Iraqi authorities, the American officials said that the Iraqi government must do more to protect the American forces.

General Milli noted that the Iraqis "have the capabilities to do that (...) The question, of course, about political will, and this is not something we decide."

Unfortunately you can’t reason with these people! The only way to deal with these devils is to kill every last one of them! There is no compromise with them! If there was, then all that money obama gave them would have bought peace! Instead they just bought more weapons and killed more people! The only things these devils understand is death! We should give it to them too! I would go in the buzzard raising business to send over there to eat meat of their dead bodies! Damn if I would bury one of those devils! JMHO!🤠
